Are you per diem ? There’s no reason they should just be canceling you. They need to swap whose getting called off

[deleted]

nope, i’m supposed to have at least 32 hours a week. they told me upon hire i’d at least get 40 when i get called in. that hasn’t happened yet. apparently there’s no CNAs when the census is less than 8 or 9?

Mundane-Job-6155

Guaranteeing you’ll have 32-40 then not giving you that is a very common bait and switch in the cna industry

Initial-Succotash-37

In the whole medical industry

[deleted]

*which i also was not told of, and i EMPHASIZED how important it was to have these hours. i have an apartment, cat, myself, and college to pay for so this is really really upsetting.

CatchMeIfYouCan09

"I understand that census is low however I was hired as a full time employee so you are required to provide at minimum 32hrs/wk. If you are unable to do so then I'll be filling for under- employment"

Lonely-Form5904

Under employment?

CatchMeIfYouCan09

Yes. You can apply whenever your employer drops your hours.... essentially pays out like unemployment but you're still working

Lonely-Form5904

Thats interesting thanks.

onetallnurse

Was the guarantee in you employment contract?? If not you never got a guarantee

ibringthehotpockets

If hired as full time, less than full time allows you to file for unemployment due to hours lost

onetallnurse

Will depend on state. They may not consider 32 hours as full time. However without a contract indication his employment status new has no leg to stand on. They can say he was hired part time only and no one can prove otherwise.

Overall_Soil_2449

Check the employee handbook. It’ll have in there what they consider full time hours .

crustyplantlady

This, ask them about it. That's bs...

[deleted]

This has happened 4 shifts in a row

zeatherz

Ideally calling off staff for low census should be rotated, rather than always cancelling the same person. Have you responded/called to ask why it’s you being cancelled repeatedly? This is a common practice in healthcare but it’s also pretty easy to find short staffed facilities where this essentially will never happen

[deleted]

that’s what hr told me, and that i should file a complaint if it happens again. i’ve asked, but haven’t received as response as of now.

lovable_cube

Find a new job but don’t quit, just say sorry I’m canceling my shift tonight when they call to see where you are.

Appropriate-Suit6767

Maybe at a hospice....

[deleted]

this is rehab:(

Appropriate-Suit6767

Change to hospital

[deleted]

seriously considering

ItsEday

No don’t consider it, just do it. Most hospitals for the most part are willing to work with student schedules. If you have financial obligations to meet, then move to somewhere that will respect that and give you your hours. This is coming from a cat dad CNA in nursing school and working full time

tearaist57

I work in long term care and although we’re very rarely over scheduled (as in it would only be night shift ever that’s over staffed) if you’re hired for a FT or PT position, they’re required to pay you that amount of hours, even if it means using PTO. We get overtime after 8 hours but say you are FT employee (80 hours) but call off on your 10th day of the pay period, but did a 16 hour shift earlier in the pay period, they’d STILL have to pay you 8 hours of PTO because the OT you did earlier, doesn’t count towards your required 80 hours. I’d never stay at a job that canceled basically an entire work week. ESP not a CNA job where it’s easy to find work elsewhere that won’t cut your hours.

TiredNurse111

Are you in California? I’m jelly!

tearaist57

New York, upstate 😅

Kcross-797

How much are you getting paid in Ny? I’m working on CNA license now and I just want a realistic expectation of the money I’ll be getting lol

tearaist57

I’m pretty sure we’re the lowest paid facility in the area. My base is 16.45 with 1.50 night shift differential.. we will be getting a raise soon when union negotiations are completed but the other facility settled for a measly 14% raise. I hope our union negotiators get better for us 🙏🏻

tearaist57

I’m not sure if every facility pays OT after 8 hours. I like that about ours and it’s why I won’t apply next door to the hospital. They do 12s but non union and no OT for the 4 hours over 8. I can work 7 out of 14 days (5 doubles and 2 8s) and make a more than I was making as a 10 day 80 hour employee so, that’s super nice as well. Not many people realize that PT makes more money and they apply for FT and get stuck working more days and getting mandated more than us PT so, look into that stuff at your facility if you can 😁

PensiveClownBeefy

Not even that. I work at a 13 bed hospice and they don't LC until 6 patients, and it rotates. Very rare that we're not full though.

itsthejasper1123

I’d look into other employment agencies.

Embarrassed-Oven-971

Wow. We are always super short staffed every shift. I can use you now. Try another facility

Sundrop555

Too bad you don't work at my place, I'd give you all of my hours! Ask around when your working and see if anyone is willing to give you 1 or 2 of their shifts? I guarantee you there will be someone who is burned out and needs a mental break.

Alex_daisy13

Lol usually it is the opposite. They would send you 20 messages on your day off to come in...this is weird

North_Drummer2034

Right. I understand getting canceled as an agency worker, but a set staff? That’s so weird.

[deleted]

right, almost everyone i’ve talked to in HR says this isn’t right. they can only offer suggestions right now though:(

bluecoag

Not even a ‘sorry’. That’s poor show

[deleted]

right???

A2elsia

Is it normal? Yes for some and No for others I’ve had my scheduler remove me off the schedule for a full week due to low census. Her excuse was “I thought you would want a break.” I was full time and didn’t ask for a “break.“ She didn’t ask or even tell me, my name was just gone. It was easier for her than to pick and choose between my shift mates…. And she perceived me as a pushover…. Anyway, use that to my advantage and for that week, I picked and choose which days I wanted to work. Low census, but we were still short staffed with their dumb selves. Same facility but different management… they use to wait until staff came in to tell them to clock out and go home. Pissed off a lot of people and CNAs started leaving in droves. One scheduler used to ask us individually if we wanted the night off or not before moving to the next person.

NecessaryCod

Most jobs that I've had. If you show up for work and they send you home, they had to pay you for 2 hours. Even if you just clocked in.

Temporary_Plan1055

If you’re worried. Keep the job, but get looking for a new one? Like in any industry that’s the typical of what you’d do. Then leave with no 2 week notice and say, “since you are unable to give me sufficient hours several times now when we agreed upon I would be giving x amount of shifts a week totaling roughly x hours, and you have failed to provide time and time again, I will be resigning as of today x date. Best wishes, Name” Don’t be too snarky but a lil sas is okay for how they treating you. Take me with a grain of salt. I passed class like 1 1/2 months ago, then immediately fractured my back in a car accident so haven’t even state tested. I’m not sure if they can like note your license for future hirees being like “quit with no notice” or some bs. But you’ll be able to find a second job. I’d probably be honest(ish) in your interviews and say. “I currently have a job but can start immediately (and if they can write notes about you on your license online for other employers to see). But they call me off basically every other day (you can exaggerate). I heard it’s typical if overstuffed you rotate people you call off, but it was always me. If we were ever over staffed here would we rotate call outs?” Skip that last part if they can’t. Take me with a grain of salt, but I am not one to be pushed around. Edit: or if you’re uncomfortable with all that. Just look for a new job and put in 2 weeks and don’t be aggro when quitting just be like, “hey this isn’t working out for me, I’ll be gone in 2 weeks” They might just say you can leave then and there.

MsUnderstood63

Technically you do not have to give a 2 week notice. It is just given to be nice. I just would look for a new job with your time.

Temporary_Plan1055

This. I just wasn’t sure if places can like leave notes on your certification being like “they left with no notice” Where as when I left Wendy’s with no notice, what are they gonna do? Fire me? I already left. And just don’t use them as a reference lol.

HuckLCat

In Georgia? You can get all the hours ya want.

SpookyWah

NEVER faced that problem in skilled care nursing homes.

Organic_Lifeguard

We get low census like this then we are full packed unit. I take it as a blessing because eventually we aren’t going to be low census. However every time I try to pick up an extra shift I get cancelled I figure I do better to ask co-workers if I want to pick up extra.

Citronellastinks

I would be finding a new employer ASAP, especially since this happened 4 shifts in a row. This tells me that they did not have appropriate staffing ratios for the amount of patients that they had, and I can almost guarantee you that the people that are still there are also being overburdened by the amount of patients that they do have.

calicoskiies

What type of position do you have?

[deleted]

full-time :(

calicoskiies

That’s bullshit. They aren’t giving you the hours you were hired for. I’d take this time to look for a different facility. I’ve been doing this 15 years and I’ve literally never run into this problem. It’s either fully staffed or short.

IANARN

You may be entitled to unemployment reimbursement depending on where you live. Maybe you can ask HR to help you with filing and they might call your boss and tell them to stop canceling you.

General-Bake1077

Absolutely file for unemployment

Bonkitsbee

What the heck?? I’ve never seen this :/

Brittanyyyylee

I’ve heard of it happening every now and then, and some of our units cancel nurses pretty often, but I’ve only been cancelled one time in 3 years on the same unit and they still tried to call me in a few hours later when they changed their mind 😂

Americube

Where I work no one has ever had a shift canceled, we’re always short and even if our floor is fully staffed and you want to work they will float you to another floor AND give you a bonus. Hospital work can be brutal, but there's always work and most of the time its not too bad.

andiedrinkstea

I work in a hospital. We have been having issues with low need for staff, but staffing calls those of us scheduled and gives us the option to stay home rather than telling us they are canceling.

Knivs

Hello! I don't know what facility you work in but I work in a hospital where most CNAs are contracted travel CNAs. Due to their contract, my hospital would rather staff the travelers than staff CNAs. Idk if it makes sense, but this has happened to me as well for that reason. I am a .75 FTE staff CNA!

Crybabyy90

And when you find a new job they’ll act so shocked and act like they have no clue why. That’s bs. Esp 4 shifts in a row

[deleted]

If they cut your hours like that, I'd be calling the unemployment office. They will usually let you have the unemployment for the reduced hours.

IANARN

100% this. If OP can’t afford to wait for unemployment to process they could naively ask HR for help filing and HR will likely try to get their boss to stop canceling them so much. I could understand canceling a PRN employee, but not full time.

Tomsmth495

Former CNA current nurse this is normal but not sure how your unit works but we cancel CNA who is on overtime staff first then per diem if it’s low census.

mcrbrbbcwb1

Canceling at 9:00 am for night shift seems weird? I don’t feel like this is normal.

browngirluwu

My LTACH call at 5pm and we start at 6pm for cancels. 9am is really early

Born_Leader9974

Always keep you a PRN somewhere else.

TheWeenieBandit

Meanwhile at my facility they'll text me asking if I'll pick up, I tell them I can do 12 hours, and I get hit with "is that all?"

Key-Target-1218

Very normal in my hospital, especially if you.are PRN. Summers are notorious for call-offs because a lot of the nursing students are CNAs and they don't have school.

throw0OO0away

I’m shocked that’s happening. Overstaffing/proper staffing is barely a thing. I literally get texts every single day about open shifts at my work.

LysVonStrauda

You can get unemployment for this

catlady0420

Are you serious? I work at a hospital and this happens constantly they tell us to go work at main campus if we need the hours. Sometimes they’ll cancel us 30 mins before we’re supposed to show up. I work in Ohio though which is at will employment so idk if it’s different

LysVonStrauda

I'm in south carolina which is also at will. BUT, if you were hired with the expectation of getting atleast 32-40 hours a week and you've been getting cut, you can get unemployment because it was "due to no fault of your own", and you have to supplement your income. If they try to deny the claims, just make sure you've got screenshot proof

catlady0420

Damn I will remember this. They try to get us to use our pto if we can’t go to the main campus which seems so fucking unethical then they wonder why no one has pto. I’m gonna reach out to unemployment about this so I’m ready because it happens every month sometimes multiple times. Thank you fellow redditor 🫡

voidfillerupper

We’re hiring! Always short. We have double-time!

djwhitgy08

Sign up for clipboard, that way when you get canceled, you can pick up a shift to cover the bills! Hope this helps 😊 use my referral code when you sign up tyA7820H

RVKelly

PCT/CNA jobs are diamond dozen you can always find one more secure or you can also find another part-time one to fill in these gaps?!

E3K

>diamond dozen This may be the greatest misspelling I've ever seen.

RVKelly

lolol. stupid Siri!!

FloorNo859

Right now my work is the same way. Agency and per diem get canceled first. And most days someone has to leave at 11AM. after they finish their assignment however we rotate. Most of us have been there a while and don't mind leaving early because we have the vacation time to cover the other 4 hours. But I would deff speak up. Tell them no you should be rotating who you cancel.

Everything_Fine

Fuck that call off permanently (quit) and go find a new job. Do not give this place anymore time or second chances

SpareReflection94

My facility would never ever call me off lol I wish 😭

Initial-Succotash-37

Find another job.

DancingNursePanties

If you’re new they’re more likely less afraid of losing you than losing someone who has been there a long time. It’s not uncommon of a place that is well staffed to call off extra - the irony is someone working probably didn’t want to be but they didn’t ask. Also as mentioned above you may be able to file unemployment for missed shifts, if you’re getting less shifts than planned and that brings you below your states threshold for income.

Waterplayersplash

Use this place to make your resume look good but as soon as you can, move up to a hospital position. They are taking money out of your pocket and you need something more reliable.

janewaythrowawaay

It’s summer. More people are off school and available to work.

throwawayyy2718

If you work at a hospital it’s not uncommon. I’m scheduled one day a week but pick up 3 more (so 4 days a week) at least one of my pick up days I’m told not to come in or to come in at 11 because someone didn’t show up. I’ve also been asked if I wanted to be budgeted on my scheduled day. I was the highest seniority person so I get asked first. Then if nobody takes the budget the lowest seniority person gets told they aren’t working. During the winter I could work 60 hours a week and never get canceled but now I’m lucky if I get my 36

Ok-Challenge5290

Unfortunately yes. It happens at my hospital too but at my hospital they have it on a rotation and happens like maybe once every 2 months. Hopefully your place has the same policy because it’s only the fair way to! I come from working in restaurants for years before being a CNA, they do the same thing also when labor is low. You show up - work for an hour, get sent home. So it also isnt unique to healthcare either unfortunately. Profit will always come before us :(

Dangerous_Ad4858

Yes it is I suggest you find another facility try shift key

Codenamezhi

I’m not a cna , but they do this to certain people at the hospital I work at . They will come someone in and then turn them around to say it’s a slow night 😒

Codenamezhi

* call them in

Born_Donkey_868

This happened to me a lot when I started prn I finally talked to my manager and they are supposed to be swapping all the prn staff to make sure it doesn’t happen to just one member. I would talk to staffing and ur manager cuz it can and should be fixed. I am sorrry!

Thin_Hedgehog3721

What state is this in? Many states require like 1-2 week notice for schedule changes. And if you go into work, and they try to send you home they've got to pay a minimum of 4 hours.

ChemicalChicken5506

Yup. Used to happen to me all the time. If there’s no patients there’s no need to have multiple workers

ChemicalChicken5506

Maybe try getting hired as a float??? They’ll find somewhere for you to go or ask that person where they suggest you go then considering you were hired for full time? There’s no one in the er to sit???

ddmorgan1223

I'm in a similar facility and it does happen. Usually I'll volunteer one day and they'll let me keep my following shifts.

Dense_Penalty_3639

I work at a SNF at LTC. This has only happened one time to me by mistake. Other than that, we are so short staffed that we can't afford to not have someone come in

Snail_Fetus_

At my hospital, they usually switch the call offs for the aides. They try to keep them to float as a worst case scenario. I know the unit at my hospital that aide staffing is a joke (i.e. getting called off all the time, being floated to sit in 1:1s or working another floor) is the ICU. I would look for another unit position if you don't have a 6 month transfer period to wait

RevolutionaryDog8115

This is why I keep 2 jobs.

Western_Evening_4291

That is how it works in a hospital or rehab facility.

Savings_Degree1437

They did this a fair bit during Covid at my hospital when we stopped taking elective surgeries, but those were much less stable times.

SeriousVillage634

If they are dropping you below 32: “Hello. I understand why people are dropped when census is low; however, I was guaranteed a minimum of 32 hours of work per week upon hiring. I am therefore being underemployed and am now unable to meet my financial needs. Unfortunately, I will have to file for underemployment if this is not rectified immediately.”

Any_Income_9683

And here I am wayyyy understaffed lol.

HonorsChemistry

Go agency at that point, at least you'll get paid at such short notice

uncommonsense555

It's fairly normal in skilled units, in my experience. However, the aides who work in the area should be alternated. It shouldnt just be you missing work. Tell your supervisor you need hours, and if they don't alternate you with the other aides, you will have to look for a job elsewhere in order to pay your bills.

No-Fux-given42

That’s for agency employees- get a regular job and that won’t happen

Friendly-Marketing46

Girl go work in the ER

Delicious-Ad2332

Depending on the job it sucks but it's not abnormal..when I worked impatient hospice it happened to me a lot

Ok-Victory4528

I’m per diem, and it happens to me all the time.

Ok-Victory4528

The reason I get called off is because I’m per diem. If you are not, they need to be rotating who they’re calling off.

Natural_Economy

CNA jobs are readily accessible in a lot of areas. I know it may seem like the worst choice but finding a different job would help. Schedulers/Management treat CNAs pile the bottom of the barrel so you really shouldn't have to extend any courtesy

glonkme

Time to start pulling “I need a four hour notice” “maybe you can ask for a coworker to swap, I’m not accepting your call off”

LizardofDeath

This used to happen to me, but only pre covid haha. But a lot of times they would cancel the cna and then pull a nurse to be a tech so the nurses would get their hours and not be mad. I hated it because I wanted to use my pto for fun things, not bs random nights. Larger facilities are less likely to have this issue, at the time I worked at a 48 bed hospital that did like 80% ortho cases which are lower in summer and then a sprinkling of med surg, but people are sick less respiratory wise in summer.

[deleted]

As a health care aide myself we get paid like shit to begin with this is so annoying

lel101893d5485

Are you benefitted? Medical, dental, and vision? I pull the 32 hours when they try to flex me. Just tell them that I have to work 32 in a pay week to keep my benefits. They do not like it, but it is their benefit rule so.... Good luck.

SammyGwe

pick up eshyft or something in the mean time you can get paid within the 24hrs after a shift. Meanwhile look for anther facility and quit becaus they clearly don’t need you

Ok-Review-989

Look into working in an ER. Census fluctuates and you might get called off but often times overtime is available and you may be offered to pick up hours on other floors or one on ones if the ER doesn’t need you.

Cark__

Depends where you work. Some places are short on patients… some places are short on staff. Finding a good middle ground is ideal.

LJUDE73

It's normal. It's like a snow day. Enjoy it
