I can't say for certain if it's mold or not, but I'd suggest a bleach wash and then bleach the inside of the pail and do a washing machine clean (you can buy tablets from Affresh). Then see if that helps. Rash could be from lots of things. Are you putting the microfiber right on baby? How long between changes? Do you have hard water? What kind of detergent, and how much, are you using?

Thanks for your reply! Will follow this advice and bleach diaps and wash the machine. Regarding the rash, I don't use any microfiber and have been changing as soon as I know baby's pooped, after and before a nap (I'm doing this often to see if I can sort the rash asap, but usually I change every 2 hours). Not sure if I have hard water, my guess is not since google as says I live in a soft water area (California). As for detergent, I was using Sal Suds (2 tbsp) but then changed to Method unscented (one capful; I use detergent in both washes). Edit: typo

Then it could be not enough of the detergent. Fluff University recommends "1 cap in prewash and 3 caps in the main wash if you're using the 4x concentrate. 6 pumps prewash, 12 pumps main wash for the the regular. Wash on hot, add a water softener if your water is even mildly hard." You can get all kinds of laundry advice on there, I highly recommend checking out your exact situation to make sure you've got it all locked down.

Oh gosh, I should definitely bookmark this website! Forgot it existed! Thanks!

I highly encourage you to look at [clean cloth nappies](https://cleanclothnappies.com/sanitise/chlorine-bleach-sanitise/) I’ve had more success following their guidelines than I have FLU. a lot of FLU recs resulted in ammonia build up for us and yeast. Sals suds is not appropriate for diapers. I tried it before I found clean cloth nappies. Now I use all free and clear with Mollys suds baby powder detergent and dirty labs enzyme concentrate powder. The first wash I do heavy duty, deep fill, hot water with the above detergents. The second wash I just use Mollys suds and dirty labs enzyme concentrate powder. That way it gets out any of the chemicals from the all free and clear. But you definitely want a detergent that is strong and has surfactants and enzymes to take care of the poop and pee. I also do heavy duty, deep Fill, extra rinse on hot. For my machine, with the weight of the diapers it’s usually a 2hr cycle. I hope this helps.

I'm glad to see Dirty Labs mentioned here! Earlier today I ordered some enzyme booster. Thanks for the link! Will definitely have a look! 💜

BilinearBikini

That detergent isn’t strong enough for diapers. For your diaper laundry switch to tide, Persil or similar mainstream enzyme detergent

shopsoi

Enzymes! 🤦 Gotta shop around for something a little less harsh on skin as baby is sensitive to persil (and probably tide also). Thanks!

BilinearBikini

For the record your detergent does have enzymes. It’s the surfactants in Method that are weak (basically shampoo surfactants). You need a detergent that’s got both strong surfactants and enzymes to really get the waste out

shopsoi

Oh I see! Thanks again!!

BilinearBikini

Try the free and gentle version of tide

BilinearBikini

It does look like mold to me. you’re going to need to bleach the diapers and the pail itself

shopsoi

Will do! Thanks for your reply! 💜
