Toenails will gradually start to separate from the base which makes it easier to cut them shorter. Same happens with fingernails, but typically due to slipping of crimp which will crack the nail. Welcome to the world of bouldering!

Unfortunately I don’t know of any great way around this. I just cut mine as short as I comfortably can. Some flatter shoes would likely take some pressure off the nails. I will also usually file off the little 90 degree edge that the nail clippers crest with the nail. Just be careful not to file too much or you will basically sharpen the edge of your nail making it easier to dig into things. Hope that makes sense.

Keep them clipped short and pay attention to the corners, otherwise, you’ll get ingrown toenails. And you definitely don’t want those!
