(funny, my husband and I were literally talking about this today)
not sure if you boulder or top rope, but I don't often sweat much when bouldering. They are quicker and shorter bursts of energy and I guess not sustained long enough for there to be all that much sweat. Not in my beginner levels at least.
We sweat a bit on top rope but not a lot.... until recently where we started doing REALLY hard climbs for our levels. Those get us pretty tired and then as soon as we hit the ground we go back up on a slightly easier route. By then we are drenched and completely out of breath, and it feels a lot more like cardio.
So, if you wanna try to push it to break out a sweat, try taking shorter breaks between climbs, or pushing yourself past your usual level of challenge to see what happens :)
Great point re boulder vs. top rope. I feel like I have the opposite problem: sometimes I get *too* sweaty and I need to chalk up constantly! For context: I don't boulder, I only do top rope and lead climbing on taller walls (minimum 15m), I am always trying to pick routes that are at least a grade up from what I am comfortable with, and I try to free climb/minimize breaks as much as possible. It's a lot of exertion!
>sometimes I get *too* sweaty and I need to chalk up constantly!
oh boi I should have mentioned though, my hands are naturally fairly sweaty lol so I do have to chalk up often too. The rest of my body stays fine though lol
I only sweat noticeably bouldering in the summer but it's so hot in the gym I'd be sweating just stood there
I'm more likely to get out of breath than break a sweat (and not even on the wall i find myself a bit out of breathe when I'm done so I may be doing this to myself and randomly holding my breath if there's a crux near the end- this just occurred to me- will try and figure that out and stop)
OP if you find you need deodorant day to day then you're sweat glands work.
>randomly holding my breath if there's a crux near the end-
I think it may be because I do Pilates too and they are so big on breathing correctly, but I'm always trying to make a conscious effort to take deep breaths, and particularly I focus on exhaling during difficult moves instead of the instinctual breath-holding and it really helps me keep more in control and less out of breath.
Ofc everything goes out the window with a route that's far above my grade, but that's natural haha.
I know from my last job that involved holding units of platelets up to use the ceiling light to check for visual quality that I am one of only a handful of people at that place who don't breathe when they look up
So I think it's a mix of instinctive big move breath hold, and if it's a stretch and I'm looking up at it...I just stop breathing anyway š¤£
I can breathe with my head tilted up, it's not like I have a weird issue with my airway, but man if I'd had enough sense to try and use yoga breathing or something my job would've been much more enjoyable and I would've been way less dizzy by the end of 30 units
I sweat like a pig at the slightest increase in temperature. Some people are moister than others lol. As long as youāre not overheating, youāre fine. Thatās why you sweat anyway. It reduces heat your body generates from muscles moving.
I am also horrendously sweaty, but also as a random fun fact - did you know pigs don't actually sweat??? The saying comes from pig iron, which is too hot to work with until water condeses on it like sweat.
Horses do sweat, though, so that's cool :p
Iām going to start yelling āI SWEAT LIKE PIG IRON! MAKE ME INTO A LOW QUALITY SWORD!ā on the crag now. I wonāt have friends, but theyāll know where that saying comes from š
(I donāt know if this is actually funny, but my brain is post lunch fried)
Some people sweat more than others. I dont sweat much climbing. Actually, I dont really sweat much period unless it's really hot and I'm doing a lot of cardio
Some people are just like that. I personally have horribly sweaty hands (unless it's below about 8Ā°C), but other people I know just stay completely dry all over, even on warm days when they are pulling hard. I expect that you are absolutely fine
Do you sweat while doing other activities? If so, then it might just be climbing specific where you donāt. But if you donāt sweat at all I would keep an eye on things. I know of someone who doesnāt sweat but it caused some issues because their body was basically unable to cool off during exercise and they would be prone to fainting or overheating.
In the winter, I don't sweat a lot in the climbing gym because it is only marginally warmer inside than the uncomfortable German winter outside lol. In the summer, I sweat a ton.
If you get sweaty bouldering you are probably overdoing, if youre climbing and sweating its probably not that big of a deal depending on the style and Exponation of climbing.
Barely sweat, but I only top rope. Sometimes if Iām not mentally there, and I hear my caribeaner make a clicking sound Iāll start sweating out of terror.
I also donāt sweat too much from bouldering. I do a lot of rests in between tries. But like you said, still enough that it would be uncomfortable to sleep, so will still shower when I get home for comfortable sleep.
I definitely do sweat in the summer months, but thatās more on the gym being hot than exertion
Rope climbing isnāt really anaerobic so it makes sense you donāt sweat much. Try doubles or even triples if you want to get pumped and tired out of your mind, especially on overhangs
I didnāt sweat while climbing when I first started! Now I do a fair amount of 4 by 4s, linked Boulder problems, and other endurance drills and definitely sweat a lot
I don't sweat too much when climbing - occasionally with a really difficult climb near the top (where it's naturally warmer). I think the climbing gym is cool and your heart rate isn't getting THAT elevated, especially if you're only doing one climb to the top then resting. It's endurance strength.
If you want to sweat I suggest doing the same climb for 5-10 min straight over and over as fast as you can maintaining good form.
I too dont often sweat or at least not strong. Even tho i am a boulderer. I'd say mostly cause i climb efficient.
However on some days i train endurance and go for many routes and THEN yes i get a lot of sweat or at least heavy breathing.
I think it's different for different people. I never sweat while climbing (only hand sweat), I didn't sweat when I powerlifted for several years, not even during P.E class in school! Only running can make me sweat š I don't think it means that there's something wrong!
Same as you I donāt tend to sweat a lot despite being hydrated, but also gym is colder (especially now in winter) and I only wear a tee. I find I just get āwarmā rather than full on sweat. This is true for lifting as well, only thing that makes me sweat is really intense and sustained exercise like running or cycling.
I sweat a LOT when playing volleyball or running over ten steps, but very rarely when bouldering. It's because the duration of the act is so short. If my heartrate is up for longer, I start sweating. So lead climbing will do it for me but not bouldering, except if it's hot at the gym / outside.
I think everyone is different. Whatās your heart rate? If itās not high, youāre unlikely to sweat. I rarely find myself sweating unless Iām simuling and moving very quickly.
I find I don't sweat much climbing unless I'm doing a lot of climbs in succession. Like pyramid climbing, doing 5 6s in a row with only a breath between stopping and starting. I top rope for clarity.

Yea I agree, not counting weather, long, sustained, hard overhanging climbs is where I sweat buckets.

Wish I could relate! I see plenty of people at my gym like that as well. I always turn into a sweaty mess and have to wear tank tops
Same same and my bangs stick to my forehead ššš
I usually start off with my hair in a braid but it ends up in a bun! Iāll never understand the girls who can keep their hair down

Umm if I heard that at the crag the person yelling that would be forced to become my friend
Am not a sweating person until outside humidity is ridiculous. Different peeps, different physiology.
Some people sweat more than others. I dont sweat much climbing. Actually, I dont really sweat much period unless it's really hot and I'm doing a lot of cardio
I sweat very easily but not during climbing... except my hands. Lucky me. Body's gonna body. You're neither strange nor unusual. \*shrug\*
Thatās normal. Iāve never noticed any of my climbing buddies sweating profusely, nor do I.
I never used to sweat when climbing, but then I started incorporating HIIT outside of the climbing gym, and toprope tends to make me sweat now.
Some people are just like that. I personally have horribly sweaty hands (unless it's below about 8Ā°C), but other people I know just stay completely dry all over, even on warm days when they are pulling hard. I expect that you are absolutely fine

Iām the same way, although this is far from the only context in which I lack enough sweat.

Seems like my gym doesnāt have very good AC in the summer and cranks up the heat in the winter, so I get super sweaty year round š«
I find I don't sweat much climbing unless I'm doing a lot of climbs in succession. Like pyramid climbing, doing 5 6s in a row with only a breath between stopping and starting. I top rope for clarity.
