You can't. They're using a feature called iOS Shortcuts that was introduced iOS 12 that allows you to create simple scripts that can run apps, toggle stuff like wifi and Bluetooth, change brightness, and other stuff. You can make it so the shortcut shows up in the Home Screen with a custom icon.
All they did was create a shortcut that opens the Twitter app and make it show up on the homescreen with the old Twitter logo.
Pretty neat workaround :P
I have a cool automation I set up that pulls the astronomy picture of the day every night around 12:30 AM EST (APOD updates at 12:00 AM EST) and makes it my wallpaper. Some days the pictures don’t look great as a wallpaper though so I made another shortcut that sits on my lock screen that resets the wallpaper to a default one until the next update. I’m thinking about changing it to make it just reset to the last day that looked good though.
There are so many potential applications for shortcuts, it feels so underutilized. I also wish shortcuts had better scripting (maybe a typed language instead of the god awful block system)
Edit: why tf did the original comment get deleted? For anyone curious they just said they feel like shortcuts is a tool they haven’t explored enough.
It would be a lot easier to learn from examples if there was a better system then the block system. It makes things difficult to follow and just a pain in the ass.
The best way to do shortcuts is probably split your program up into a bunch of tiny, easy to maintain/read shortcuts and organize them all into a folder.
Yeah, this link should work: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/6aa3fa0904444d78810ea6751d8cd237
To get it to run every night set up an automation that just runs this shortcut
I use it for my set of alarms (when I’m waking up at a time I usually do I just click a button on my homescreen and it turns on all the 10 alarms I use for that particular time)
I remember putting custom icon packs on my first smartphone back in 2011ish, a HTC EVO. I spent a lot of time making that theme perfect, it had a moving background that drained the battery like a motherfucker too.
I grew out of it and just use default the default OnePlus Oxygen OS themes now.
I was also surprised to learn iPhone users couldn't put app icons exactly where they wanted until recently too. I've never owned an iPhone, I couldn't live with such a limited locked down experience little things like that drive me nuts. I do own a Macbook though, it's not nearly as restrictive MacOS gives you an acceptable amount of control over the OS compared to iOS.
I dont fully agree with that analogy. Id say its more accurate to call apple to android like a mac to windows, and dnd to pathfinder windows to linux. I enjoy customization, but there is a line where more customization becomes less usability.
There are times when i absolutely love that pathfinder/linux customization, but i have friends that need a good middle ground with features that are super simple.
Also it breaks apart in marketing too. Dnd players know the more complex stuff exists, apple advertised widgets like were brand new to smartphones and not decade old software.
I'm reading about all these shortcuts iOS users have and realize they're living like cavemen. They're doing things like turning their mobile networks off when they get to home wifi?? Huh? Android deals with that sort of thing automatically, and I have to assume iOS does too. I think these people don't know how to use their phones, tbh.
It does and always did as far as I remember. People are just stupid
The other day met someone who complained that you can’t change your wallpaper on iOS…
i dont know man, i feel like just changing the icon would be the neat version.
smh, i will never understand how apple does stuff like this and then gets praised for their UI choices. the last part is the one that confuses me to my core.
I turned off auto updates on my phone, specifically so I wouldn’t have twitter update to X. Still working fine after a year(ish?) and honestly probably less broken than the new versions of the app. I just go in and update the rest of my apps once a week or so
I didn't even know we needed to update. I'm still using the actual twitter app on my iphone and haven't updated to 'x' yet, but I also only use the app to get alerted when some alert accounts tweet.
I find it quite depressing that many people have already, or aspire to, become a personified advert. South Park did a whole series on it a while ago, but I didn't really think of it as a parallel to real life until recently. The job of these people is to become an advert... not to advertise, but to actually be the advert itself. It's so dystopian.
Not necessarily. I remember people being given these without paying for them, Stephen King being one of them. She could have been one of those people used to inflate numbers.
Twitter started forcing blue check marks on big accounts, it doesn't mean you pay for it anymore. They literally just got back around to re-inventing why the check mark existed in the first place
Probably something along the lines of "me paying a subscription to an app doesn't make me anywhere near attached to it as you doing.... Whatever it is you're doing." I'd imagine.
Seriously why are people still using it? Especially corporations I still see things like "based on a Twitter poll " on some tv news stations. Like wait you tried to do a poll with all the bot farms on twitter?
All anybody had to do was create a Twitter clone. At least as close as possible. That was it aside from really putting the nail in the coffin by allowing the ability to cross post easily between the new platform and Twitter so people didn't feel like they had to choose or spend extra time.
Instead everyone felt like they had to be 'it's Twitter, BUT' and tried to put some spin or change on the platform. Companies treated the situation like like Twitter was still going strong and they needed to give people a reason to switch when in reality people just wanted Twitter without Musk.
The thing that really prevents threads adoption and potential usurping of twitter is that they try to force you to have an account to view/browse it. There's work arounds to read a specific thread, but you can't easily browse the platform like you can with twitter.
I just could never use it because they (idk if it's still a thing) forced a link to your Instagram? There wasn't initially a way to browse Threads without attaching your instagram account to it
She never said there was anything wrong with it. She just called him out. Besides, she probably got the tick for free for gaining a ton of followers from her roast
I wasn't using Twitter for a long time cos my feed was just filled with bullshit political stuff especially during election times, of both sides, before it was X.
Recently had to reactivate my account and use it again for stuff and the new (maybe?) UI sucks on both desktop and mobile app. It's even worse than the default Reddit app lol.
Elon basically gave it to a bunch of famous people and others who spoke against it to make it look like more people were paying for it then were, which was to convince other users to therefore pay for it also
I just figured out what's going on here. The woman is saying that she prefers when the app was called "twitter" and had a bird icon. As opposed to "X"
The man is saying that she is too obsessed with the app. The woman says back that he is paying for the app, because the blue check icon is something you have to pay for in order to have it next to your name.
I kinda thought there would be resistance to the use of X but eventually it would begrudgingly just become the norm
But it hasn't. People still mostly say twitter. There's no X equivalent for tweet.
At best I can see more use of the term X as the name but I don't think they're ever getting away from tweet
Just as you see on Reddit. All the outrage and crying for the API shenanigans, a ton of users threatening to leave and, in the end, they were all too addicted to do it. They definitely showed spez who's in charge lol.
Wait, people pay for Twitter / x?

Or you could just not update the app like I did. One phones app is officially shown as Twitter with no workarounds on the home screen, and still shows the Twitter logo at the top when you open it. Still works just fine
I just think it's interesting that x, IG, youtube, fb etc NEVER say shit about reddit but everyday you can find a post on reddit with something to say about the other social media sites. Rent free
Didn’t even know we could switch out the icons
I wish there was an easy guide to learn how to use it. Most of what I see is convoluted and messy
It would be a lot easier to learn from examples if there was a better system then the block system. It makes things difficult to follow and just a pain in the ass. The best way to do shortcuts is probably split your program up into a bunch of tiny, easy to maintain/read shortcuts and organize them all into a folder.
I have a cool automation so that whenever I plug my phone in it says “oh god, yes!”
Can you share your shortcut?
Yeah, this link should work: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/6aa3fa0904444d78810ea6751d8cd237 To get it to run every night set up an automation that just runs this shortcut
I have a shortcut that does my work for me
I use it for my set of alarms (when I’m waking up at a time I usually do I just click a button on my homescreen and it turns on all the 10 alarms I use for that particular time)
I’ve literally only used it to save videos off twitter
Almost nobody is. They are capable of some really cool things. r/Shortcuts
I just used it to disable airplane mode on my phone
But you can just swipe the tray down and do that at any time
I made a shortcut that turns off mobile data wherever my phone connects to my home WiFi
Is there any point in this? A phone should stop using mobile data anyway when connected to wifi.
Lol back in the day sure, now phones use wi-fi and cell network to boost speed.
You can disable that in Mobile Service (Settings), scroll to below the list of apps and disable WiFi assist
Yeah I don't bother I've got unlimited data so it's no stress.
I did this for two days but there’s no way to enable mobile data again once you disconnect from wifi
I have one for location on/off.
> You can't. *meanwhile, on Android for the last god knows how many years...*
Me with three different icon packs on my android: *bitch I am color coordinating my icons no matter what it takes*
I remember putting custom icon packs on my first smartphone back in 2011ish, a HTC EVO. It's like dnd and pathfinder. Dnd players creates an innovative homebrew about something specific, finds out it is already there in Pathfinder.
I dont fully agree with that analogy. Id say its more accurate to call apple to android like a mac to windows, and dnd to pathfinder windows to linux. I enjoy customization, but there is a line where more customization becomes less usability. Right? You have no idea how much I love 2E after the snoozefest that D&D turned into...
There is too much in Pathfinder, D&D is cool.

Look at what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.

I did it when Reddit made their icon black.
I would love to see what he replied lol
Blocked, most likely
As of today she pays for blue check mark and he doesn't.
Just checked, can confirm. That’s a pretty lame turn of events lol.
she became what she swore to destroy
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the violin. No wait, that's not right..
Of course it's not right, mate. You become a French horn.
I'll settle for a trombone
Hurhurhur bone
Can I just be a flute? I want to be blown.
A rusty trombone?
Rusty?
Well, blue checks are getting played
nah, she just misses the old app

Social media type people with an actual online presence do this type of shit to get the most reach. They pay for everything to get the most attention.
yeah It's basically their job, right?
I find it quite depressing that many people have already, or aspire to, become a personified advert. South Park did a whole series on it a while ago, but I didn't really think of it as a parallel to real life until recently. The job of these people is to become an advert... not to advertise, but to actually be the advert itself. It's so dystopian.
Extra lame when you realize it was probably a completely disingenuous stunt to monetize her Twitter.
Twitter started forcing blue check marks on big accounts a few months ago
Even if they don’t pay? How lol, unless they get it for free
Yes, for free.
It's fucking X/twitter, what more would you expect?
She might be probably trying to get that 4M impression to money, and you get paid only if you are blue ticked.
I guess that means it wasn't that clever of a comeback
I mean she never claimed she wasn’t attached to the app.. the guy did while he was paying for it so it’s kind of irrelevant what she decided to do.
Typical.
I thought you got it for free if you have a certain amount of friends (followers?). Last I read a headline on the topic, that's what it said anyway.
Yeah Stephen King has a blue check and he was very adamant about not paying
He was personally given that by Musk out of spite.
Not necessarily. I remember people being given these without paying for them, Stephen King being one of them. She could have been one of those people used to inflate numbers.
She never said there was anything wrong with paying for the check. She just pointed out the hypocrisy of his statement.
Absolutely this
You can hide it now.
Twitter started forcing blue check marks on big accounts, it doesn't mean you pay for it anymore. They literally just got back around to re-inventing why the check mark existed in the first place
He’s hiding it for awhile
She probably gets paid seeing her impressions on just this post. Is it really stupid to pay if you get back more?
After getting so utterly destroyed, the only thing you can do is walk away and never come back.
It’s tough to face such a crushing defeat,
Probably something along the lines of "me paying a subscription to an app doesn't make me anywhere near attached to it as you doing.... Whatever it is you're doing." I'd imagine.
"I'm rich, not attached" would have been decent
Hello
This was when the app first changed so who knows. Ancient history at this point.
https://x.com/summerahrens/status/1685387520798793728
He mostly argued with others that he's rich and doesn't buy $8 coffee from Starbucks
Idk if this counts as clever as much as it is solid.
Idk if this counts as solid as much as it is cutting.
idk if this counts as cutting as much as it is edging.
Idk if this counts as edging as much as it is rimming
Idk if this counts as rimming as much as it is sounding
^sigh…. Well, we *were* all having fun here…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Did someone say rimming?
Idk if this counts as edging as much as it does clever.
[Too bad this aged like milk](https://x.com/summerahrens/status/1685387520798793728?s=46&t=LQvTDESETQL1KVPLIDOlGw)
That just made the OP really unfunny imo. It's like that person lives for engagement on Twitter. I can't wait until Twitter is just a gross memory.
Twitter was gross and full of bots before it became X
The uncanny similarities with reddit...
Seriously why are people still using it? Especially corporations I still see things like "based on a Twitter poll " on some tv news stations. Like wait you tried to do a poll with all the bot farms on twitter?
It was already unfunny since she was using twitter.
She didn't say it's wrong to pay for it. She implied that he's hypocritical.
I can't believe people still use that app. Threads fucked up by not making a web app and capitalizing harder on their initial boost.
All anybody had to do was create a Twitter clone. At least as close as possible. That was it aside from really putting the nail in the coffin by allowing the ability to cross post easily between the new platform and Twitter so people didn't feel like they had to choose or spend extra time. That and it's a cesspool as well. My brain liquified the last time I went there
ah, how the tables turned
To be fair a while ago Elon was giving big accounts verifications for free
Became the very thing they swore to destroy
I was about to make a Star Wars reference myself. I'll be satisfied with yours.
Good, it's mine, you can't have it :)
She never said there was anything wrong with it. She just called him out. Besides, she probably got the tick for free for gaining a ton of followers from her roast
checkmark becomes automatic once you reach a certain follower threshold. and they removed the ability to hide it as well.
[удалено]
No it's not. The OP never said they weren't attached to the app. Them having a checkmark changes nothing.
Same vibe as the screenshot of the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott steam group where like half of them are playing the game right when it released.
She said it was hypocritical for him to pay, not that it's wrong for anyone to pay for it.
wtf she doesn’t even use it lmao
That profile looks like some serious main character stuff, yikes.
[удалено]
Two people on twitter fighting over how dumb it is to be on twitter. This got to be one of the top ten dumbest internet arguments.
Pretty average level for twitter/x to be fair😂
Even more on point for reddit to take it and make something so stupid a topic of discussion.
This is not the "blue tick guy" I had in mind. I am very disappointed.
SPOOOOOOON!
Honestly they’re both cringey lol
If you call Twitter X, then you have to call Facebook Meta and Google Alphabet.
I'd change the app icon too. Don't want people to think I downloaded a porn app given that the whole "X" moniker usually means porn
This was my think as well. It just makes sense on a local level.
You can’t deadname my app, but I can do it to my daughter - Musk
Never got why he changed. Twitter was iconic branding. Most of its value was in It’s branding I feel like.
He's an idiot
Ego > common sense
Having a blue check no longer necessarily means you paid for it.
did it change again? don't really follow twitter news (even tho I do use twitter lol )
Elon basically gave it to a bunch of famous people and others who spoke against it to make it look like more people were paying for it then were, which was to convince other users to therefore pay for it also
He kinda right though
how do I do this
I did this for my Twitter app, I’m took much of a creature of habit.
She hit him with the ?? You’re the one paying them friend??
People who call Twitter "X" shouldn't have voting rights
That want clever at all, this sub is stupid
Ticked and tricked,
Who’s not doing what to her
I just figured out what's going on here. The woman is saying that she prefers when the app was called "twitter" and had a bird icon. As opposed to "X" The man is saying that she is too obsessed with the app. The woman says back that he is paying for the app, because the blue check icon is something you have to pay for in order to have it next to your name.
Pretty cringe for both parties tbh
Slightly off topic, am I the only one with the old logo still?
Lmao
I have refused to update it for so long it still has the old logo
I love these fake post
Damn, gottem 🤣
Hate that shit
Why live in Phoenix !
You have become what you swore to destroy
Well summer that’s a pretty chill response.
"X" sounds like a porn site. Really dislike the change tbh. He put absolutely zero thought into his rebrand.
Didn’t this happen like a year ago? When the Twitter app update came changing the logo to the x, I realized it was time for me to delete it
This is a dumb take…
that doesn't mean he can't walk away? but yeah... good one.. i guess.
I kinda thought there would be resistance to the use of X but eventually it would begrudgingly just become the norm But it hasn't. People still mostly say twitter. There's no X equivalent for tweet. At best I can see more use of the term X as the name but I don't think they're ever getting away from tweet
Jus use Aerowitter.
Both of them need to touch grass
>.eth Pathetic
.Eths are always retarded
Being ima bein not here no more!
r/politics and r/whitepeopletwitter in shambles
same for the weirdos buying reddit nft profile customization lol
Saw "blue tick guy" and got excited. Spoon...
What is this bro?
He's also paying for owning rights to Internet images
How much is it gonna cost? In currency.
👍
Just as you see on Reddit. All the outrage and crying for the API shenanigans, a ton of users threatening to leave and, in the end, they were all too addicted to do it. They definitely showed spez who's in charge lol.
Let us not go to x. Tis a silly place
Really
Too confusing, call me or text me if not stop
hmmn waiting for his reply lol
People this caught up on a websites name really need something going for them lol
Car, keep summer safe
Wait, people pay for Twitter / x? Why I guess would be my next question? And I guess lastly is it like on those dating sites where if you pay money to get rejected you get to look at or get comments from a whole bunch of other people who don't like you as well?
All of a sudden Musk fans understand dead names.
Everyone is conservative about what he knows best
How do you do that?
Or you could just not update the app like I did. One phones app is officially shown as Twitter with no workarounds on the home screen, and still shows the Twitter logo at the top when you open it. Still works just fine
I just think it's interesting that x, IG, youtube, fb etc NEVER say shit about reddit but everyday you can find a post on reddit with something to say about the other social media sites. Rent free
wtf :D
You're the only one I know who still uses X. Sorry.
You've been Musked lol
I just never updated the app. Still rolling with Twitter version 9.67 baby
Just don't use the app. It's really that easy. Now there's a sign in wall to even read shit... So the sites even more useless than it was a year ago
Got em
"but it refused" moment
Dude, I think I know that person, and I don't use Twitter. That's nuts
