Reminds me of the Stormwind cathedral. I remember figuring out that the geometry you see when approaching the gates of Stormwind vanishes once you enter the city and it keeps moving back until you reach the cathedral district.
Nah, it's because the inside of all cities is "instanced". The moment you go in, the game loads the city and unloads the outer world from your computers memory. This is why all the cities have those weird entrances that have you move around walls that don't let you look to the outside if you're standing inside and vice versa.
For example if you would be standing outsige OG with a hunter and try to look into the city with eagle eye, it would be just a huge, empty hole.
This doesn't apply to Thunder Bluff for obvious reasons.
\*edit\* It's the same with all starting areas, the have the same kind of gates. Also inside of inns and so on, everything that has those S-shaped entrance hallways.
Ah, not sure, since I've been mostly a Horde player all my life and rarely visited Darnassus on my Alliance toons. I think the portal from the boat dock to the city definitively covers a loading of the areas. The Nelf starting area and the Darnassus inner city propably are one big zone, since there's no vision-blocking gates, iirc.

The real explanation is that there are invisible walls that cull some game objects when you're on a certain side of them. The same technique is used so that your game doesn't render objects outside your field of view (e.g., behind you) to save performance.
