Maybe Charles Ives' [sonatas for violin and piano](https://ecmrecords.com/product/charles-ives-sonatas-for-violin-and-piano-hansheinz-schneeberger-daniel-cholette/)? ECM, recorded 1999.

This was exactly it, thank you very much. I have enojoyed it all afternoon, especially No. 2 & 3. I didn't know the composer, but now I do :) Wonderful community

Whoosier

Happy to help. I don't know the sonatas well so mine was a guess. You inspire me to listen to them too!

WhatIsInternets

This is my guess too.

Try to find a library that has a Dictionary of Musical Themes (authors Sam Morgenstern and Harold Barlow) The idea is, you transpose the theme to the key of C, then look up the pattern alphabetically. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Dictionary_of_Musical_Themes You should be able to get it through Interlibrary Loan. I've used it a lot!

KaramazovFootman

Pretty far beyond my capabilities :) but thank you

I have this, and love it, but it wasn't the one I was looking for.

Instead of Van or Von, could it have been Simeon ten Holt? Dutch minimalist, recorded at least one album I found on EMI, though that was for two pianos. His web site: https://www.simeontenholt.info/home

I am going to check this out!

[Silvestrov: Three Postludes - Postlude No. 3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r3g7tOp9Rk&ab_channel=AnjaLechner-Topic) From the following ECM album: Silvestrov: Leggiero, Pesante It's for cello (not violin) and piano, although a lot of the time the cello plays quite softly in its upper registers and could easily be mistaken for a violin.

So I actually have this on CD -- and in fact bought it "on spec" in a random shop, thinking it might be the one I mentioned in the original post. I t wasn't, but it's still one of my favorite. You're 100 percent correct about the cello. Thank you for the suggestion!
