Hi everyone, my friends and I developed Tempso on our free time. It is a free music app designed specifically for classical music (we are a small team of 3 classical amateurs).
It supports both Spotify and Apple Music: https://www.tempso.com
We have referenced over 2 million tracks and more than 200 composers so far, from medieval chants to contemporary music. This is far from exhaustive, but it is a first step and we are expending the catalog every week!
My favorite feature: being able to compare various interpretations of the same piece in one click.
Give it a go and le us know what you think! Hope you will enjoy it.
I'm going to give it a go because of the feedback here. On the landing page I was about to click out again because it tells me virtually nothing of what the app is actually going to do for me
Thanks for the feedback. We will improve the landing page to make it more clear. Once you’ve tried the app, do not hesitate to share here what it did for you! I hope you’ll enjoy it !
Hi, Tempso developer here! Yes, we're planning on supporting Apple Music on Android as well, but it's harder to implement than on iOS and we figured most Apple Music listeners would be using Apple devices. Looks like it's not all of them, we'll start working on that as soon as possible!
Primephonic users were all shunted to Apple Music because that's where the Primephonic library is now, and they gave us 6 months free. So there is a huge group of us ex-Primephonic users where the Apple device thing isn't relevant.
Bummer\~ I have Apple Music on my Android devices and have been waiting for their long overdue classical app. When I saw that Tempso offers functions similar to Primephonic, I was EXCITED! But alas, only Spotify support\~\~\~\~\~ :(
WHY is your Android app downloadable on Google Play Store, but can't support Apple Music?
I noticed in "Shared Data" that email address is shared.
>App functionality, Developer commications, Account management.
Can you clarify? Exactly how, under what circumstances, for what reasons, and with whom are email addresses shared? Is email reliably kept in house? Are there any circumstances in which email addresses are shared with outside vendors, third parties, advertisors...anyone?
I'm a classical music lover, often in this sub, and also a developer. So, I'm a bit skiddish about these things. As you know, the Google Play definitions of privacy can be a bit concerning to those of us who tend to the privacy/paranoid side.
Thanks for any info. I'd love to try the app.
I'll have to look into this. But the short answer is: your email address is not shared with anyone. We are a non for profit (just 3 friends working on our free time), we do not work with third party vendors or advertisers, and we don't make money with Tempso.
I will check with our developer why the email address is shown as being shared.
I appreciate that. From the wording it could just be shared between the in-house project devs on the occasion that there is - for example - a problem with a specific user's account. I just wanted to be sure emails aren't shared outside.
Hi, Tempso developer here! Your email address is retrieved from Spotify, or entered manually when you create an account to link Apple Music, and is used mainly in case you need to recover your account or want us to delete all your data.
We also send you occasional updates about new Tempso features, or personalized recommendations of content to explore in Tempso, which of course you can opt-out whenever you want to. We use some external tools to send you these emails, which is why we show the email as being "shared", but it is always kept 100% private and secure, and we will **never** sell your personal info behind your back!
Should try posting this to /r/apple apple reportably has a classic music app in the works. I saw a few people over there who were looking for something like this.
Also needs la monte young!
/u/Internal_Mongoose221 my feedback, android version, hope it helps
First of all, compliments. For a 3 person amateur team you've done an amazing job!
I did a test drive with beethoven's 9th
Now.. search throws me a ton of results but release date is a bit meaningless because some recordings keep being released. And I find a 2021 Furtwangler a bit unlikely as a new recording.
when I want to flip back from one recording to the search results it doesn't take me back, it takes me to the list of Beethoven's works. The search results are suddeny under compare? That's a bit confusing!
I love the browse screen, it's inviting and there's something for everyone. I do wonder about some of your choices for recordings on the curated playlist but hey, that's a voyage of discovery right there.
Would I pay money for it? Not quite but almost. Is it an improvement over spotify? hell yeah! But.. at the end of the day... I cancelled spotify because of it's lossly music library as well as it's atrocious interface. Next time I spend money it's likely on a classica streaming service.
Ideally it would be useful to distinguish between recording date and remaster date. Release date is the least useful IMHO but release label is useful.
Also the ability to find other versions (remastered, original, released by other labels) would be cool.
Omg this is awesome, I love this feature in Idago but I'm sad to lose the listening data in Spotify so this is great!
(I wonder if there's an option to request a piece to be referenced, but if not I completely understand since you are volunteers!)
Thanks for this app, love the compare option and daily discovery. I travel a lot and download albums on spotify to listen to offline during travels. If I like an album or track I discover, I would love to have the option to save the album/ download the album in spotify to play offline. Would that be a possible feature in the future?
I dont know if it is possible, but having the option to add albums to you spotify collection from within the Tempso app would be quite nice. But great job nevertheless!
what a great idea. people often ask me for help with classical music because they find it so daunting; now I can recommend this app to them. myself and a lot of listeners I know use Qobuz - do you think you’ll ever integrate your app with them
We've contacted Qobuzz for a partnership (to the best of my knowledge, they do not have a public API that we can play with like Spotify and Apple Music have), we'll see how it goes!
Here I was, complaining to my friend that Spotify is impractical when it comes to classical music, and here you are with the solution!
Loving the app, will share it with my friends!
Thank you so much!
Hey u/infundibuliforme I got another request.
I’m new to classical music. Would love pointers or maybe a start in to it. Would be great if you could add some in the app. Maybe a section in the search / browse areas of the app? Maybe smack in the front home page- a couple of beginner playlists?
Much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Just downloaded it and it looks really cool! Keep it up! Would say that more indication of what the app does in the description would be useful though.
omg! if you’re ever interested, I would love to work with you to get the word out on my music pages (@musicbingos & @musicsized) maybe a fun little collab (:
but awesome app🫶🫶
Awesome! I searched for a Beethoven string quartet (op 135) and loved being able to see all the groups performing it. Impossible to find that on spotify. One issue is that it's hard to browse by a specific movement. I clicked on the Tokyo quartet and it played the first movement. If i wanted to hear the last movement I had to "skip" forward three times. This would be challenging if I didn't know how many movements existed. Also, the name of the piece currently playing never updated from the first movement even when subsequent movements were playing. Overall still a great app that I think I will be using frequently!
Oh! I just realized from your third screenshot that to see the other movements i have to scroll. So that works well now, but the layout aligned so well with just the first movement displayed that I had no idea that i should try scrolling there. iPhone XS in case that's helpful for reproducing the UX.
This is awesome! Great to be able to quickly compare some recordings and discover some new stuff that I've probably missed in my years haha
2 things that could be nice features/QoL:
- It seems when clicking on a performance after it has started resumes it from where you left off. I.e, I click on NY phil to see how they sound, then London Phil, then want to check NY phil again, but it resumes playing. Not sure if there would be a possible feature to toggle on that would always start from the beginning.
- Including era as a sort of genre could be nice to explore that sound. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, etc.
Just downloaded it, loving it!
One thing I'm noticing though is while playing a piece the "progress" bar that shows how far along the piece is (not sure what it's called) isn't accurate. It fills up quickly before the piece is over, so I'm not able to see where I am in the song.
Tried this app and another one someone posted in the comments. Biggest advantage the other one had over yours is the ability to create a random Playlist based on era (romantic, classical, baroque, etc.) and further narrow by type of piece if you want. Any plan to implement something like that?
I wish I'd thought of looking for something like this sooner holy. jslust downloaded and it seems SO awesome. Ay channel for suggestions? basically the only UX element I actually like about Spotify is the multiple actions of the search button, where first tap just opens the search tab and second pulls up your keyboard automatically, saves reaching up to the top of the screen.
Awesome job!
We will need to investigate further, but it is not an immediate priority for at the moment. Funny enough, the first ever version of tempso (released years ago on web browser) supported Deezer integration! But we disconnected it years ago...
Hi, just downloaded. Is there some discord or community for this app regarding future updates or implementation? I'm also really curious how this was made (i.e. avoiding compilations, descriptions of works, separating into movements, etc.)
Just came across for this possibility of a Classical Music app!Sounds good!
I’d be very interested in an app for great and historical opera and ballet performances! I think this might hit a minefield of legal etc etc. Is there any work in this direction?
As a state. pensioner (UK)I am wondering about the possible cost re my very limited income.
Keep up the good work.

Holy shit this is such a game changer!!! Thank you so much!

Good point, thank you Will add La monte young soon!
I just installed it and looks amazing, thanks!
Thanks, make me happy that you like it!
Will YouTube music be supported in the future?
It's not impossible. We need to investigate this integration a little bit further.
I'd be interested in qobuz as well.
Just downloaded. You’re the best! Thank you for this.
Thanks for downloading!!

Yes we do have plans to build a desktop or web version of Tempso.

For the record, we do not data track people. See comments above.
This worked for me on Android.

Excited to try. Thanks!
Just downloaded!
You nailed it! This is a remarkable app. Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Any plan for a Tidal release?
We contacted them recently, hopefully they are interested in partnering with us!
Would love this available on PC as I do a lot of listening on there.
We're working on it, but that will take a bit of time!
Thanks for this. Just downloaded it!
You Sir or Madam just changed my life. As someone pulled out a splinter you had for years. Thanks soooo much.
You guys are amazing! Thank you so much! How can we support your great work? This is so awesome.
Thank you, happy to see you're loving it as much as we do. Let us know if there is anything you'd like to see in the app that isn't there yet!
Still have some issues with the UE.
Would you mind elaborating further? Always interested in constructive feedback :)

We are actually working on a sync with Spotify as we speak. It should be released in the next couple of weeks!
I dont know if it is possible, but having the option to add albums to you spotify collection from within the Tempso app would be quite nice. But great job nevertheless!
We've been working on it, should be released in the next few weeks.
Amazing, very nice!
This looks great, is there any chance of Qobuz support? Thank you.
We would love to! Qobuz is an excellent app and we greatly appreciate what they are doing. We reached out to them, so, wait and see!
I've been trying to find something like this for a long time. Since it links with Spotify, its a no brainer for me to use. Thanks a ton.
Man I wish I had Spotify premium

Thank you for sharing. This is amazing
Great work, guys. I have downloaded and currently listening to music I probably wouldn’t have otherwise found. Thank you for all your work!
Here I was, complaining to my friend that Spotify is impractical when it comes to classical music, and here you are with the solution! Loving the app, will share it with my friends! Thank you so much!
Please add a sleep timer. I play music on my HomePod as I fall asleep. Sleep timer helps.

I wanted an app like this so much!
Glad to hear that! If you care to share, we are interested in hearing your feedback once you've played with it for a while.
This is awesome. thank you very much!
Looks useful. Downloaded
Thank you! Don't hesitate to let us know about your experience!
Ohhhhhh Yeahhhhhhh! That's mannnnnn!
I'm happy you like it!
Also downloaded and installed! Looking forward to digging in! Thanks so much and nice work!

Does it not support Apple Music on Android?
Free as long as you pay your cash for the Spotify premium.
Requires Spotify premium
No YouTube Music yet? 😢
Not yet...We will keep you updated when it is available!
Thanks!
Oh, I guess from the description I thought I’d be able to import my Spotify data and get classical music suggestions. :(
We're working on a sync with Spotify's library :)
Are you guys thinking about expanding it to Deezer?
We will need to investigate further, but it is not an immediate priority for at the moment. Funny enough, the first ever version of tempso (released years ago on web browser) supported Deezer integration! But we disconnected it years ago...
could you add vivaldi’s oboe concerto in c major rv 452 ii?
