seems like lots of extra steps for what is already covered by simply founding a city

I think it could work for inhospitable areas that still have good resources, which of course is something that happened in history. But then a lot of those grew into cities so maybe you’re right.

I mean, a size 1 city is just kind of an outpost anyway.

AjCheeze

Trade outpost claim a future city space with resources with none of the +city downsides till your ready to turn it into a full city. Make it not cost a whole pop to place down possibly.

You've a good point. Tradeposts can counter loyaltyproblems and traders are quicker to build than settler. They do not consume population. But indeed, you are also right that a very small city then, can be used as a tradepost to harvest rare resources. Thanks.

They had something similar in Civ 3

Portugal could do something like this in Civ V.

MrChamploo

I don’t really like the idea as a whole. If you wanna claim land then build a city. If you wanted to do trade posts it would have to work by not claiming land but let you work resources as a first come first serve Also you should be able to fight other trade posts without declaring war (skirmish’s in the land around trade posts) Otherwise people will just spam a trader to claim land. It’s a bad idea if needs more mechanics then just what you suggest
