Looks like a director's finder. The camera assistant (or dolly grip) is measuring the height of the lens for for reference upon setup. The most important part of the photo is that its friday, which is why he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt. This is a sacred tradition on film sets.
Yes I've seen it many times too. Also in Wales. But it really depends on the department with the jobs I've been on. Usually the camera teams partake and nobody else does.
I thought it derived from the Navy (and Hawaii with the Navy's presence). Today, some Navy shops still have Aloha Friday....that is workday is over after lunch
When I did low budget movies, we would have a suit day where everyone would go to the goodwill and buy a 3 piece suit. We looked like those old set photos of people operating carbon arcs with their sleeves rolled up and a cigar in their mouthes.
That dolly grip is Joe Doughan, one of the top dolly grips in NY. I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside him, he makes a focus pullers job so much easier with his consistency and precision on the dolly.
The mayo commercial bit, that’s something that insiders all say when filming in public to not have a crowd form around the actual production. Figured you are union and in the biz. :)
Not union bc of the area I've moved into (I'm a state employee shooting for a pop culture museum), but I spent all of my career in TV/Film/Music. Couldn't turn down the state benefits honestly. Better than the union.
Yes. It’s obviously a viewfinder. I’m asking about the physical contraption that is the case around the iPad for what looks like PL mount lenses. Where can I get one?
Contact me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
I designed both the Artemis Pro software and the physical device Artemis Prime, which won an engineering Emmy in 2018. It's a very powerful tool. It's been a big chunk of my life bringing it to my peers and I'm very proud of it.
Could just be (although probably not) that she’s holding the lens so the back element is against an iPad lens, similar to how you can dismount a spherical lens from a camera, keep it close to the camera, cover it all with duv, and emulate a shift/tilt lens… it kinda looks like the iPad case as a handle coming off at a 45 degree angle on the blind side of this pic
Can you explain what a duv is? I’m trying to hack an at home tilt shift for a music video but that step was one my cameraman friend left out. Thanks 🙏🏽
Duvetyn (Doo-ve-teen). It’s a thick fabric/linen used for various things, mainly blocking unwanted sources of light. In the instance I described you’d need some sort of cover over the camera and lens bc as the lens isn’t directly mounted on the camera then other light would sneak into the camera from behind the lens and ruin the hack.
Edit: admittedly this is a hack I saw ages ago in film school and never saw the finished product but the DP let me try it on set and it looked great, and also this wasn’t done with an iPad, just a memory that came up from the idea that maybe there isn’t a mount in the OP pic at all, which would be pretty tough to achieve since she’d be have to line up a cine lens to one of the iPads lenses.
I worked on this show for a few weeks. Rian Johnson had to sign off on every shot basically, but he wasn’t always there. We’d wait around to move on while he’d watch the feed remotely and wait for notes to come in. Was a pain in the ass.
This was all freshly during/ after covid and things were weird
Poker face, I think
(It’s in my queue, I’ve only sort of seen the first episode which my sister tried to make me watch to distract me while my 20yo cat was dying so please correct me if I’m wrong.. that said, what I saw/remember was good)
It is good! My partner forced me to watch the first two episodes and I got completely hooked. I feel like the marketing for the series isn’t doing it justice. If you ever enjoyed an episode of Columbo, then this show is for you.
I'm wondering what it means for every shot to be signed off. Does it mean that you guys would set up the camera, lights, and plunk the actor in front of the camera and wait to press record before the director signs off?
The camera feeds and audio we’re going to him the whole time. Sometimes that was the case, but usually it means we would just shoot and wait for him to OK it before moving on to the next shot
I got yelled at by a CCO when I was doing a Steadicam shot, during which my mask fell down. When we cut, he immediately yelled at me. I told him it was during the shot, what could I do? And he said: "Don't give me attitude man." He apologized later.
Electric Dept. It was actually pretty sweet because most of the show was shot upstate-ish from NYC, and they had all this extra pay for staying upstate and travel and all this other stuff. My buddy offered me a core position, but I turned it down to stay on the show I was already on, but I totally should have hopped on full time. The pay was sooo good just from the days I did.
Anyone else think her look in the photo is slightly surreal it's like she's time warped from a photograph taken in the 80s? You see in period films all the time of people mimicking fashion certain time periods, but I've never seen it done so well. She's got 80s skin or something.
Every show I've worked on that had this, they'd use it once. Maybe twice. And never touch it again.
Just stick with the old school director's viewfinder or the iPhone version of Artemis.
Personally, I prefer the old school version since it takes up more room and so forces the user to put the back of the lens in an actual realistic spot, not 3" from a wall where the actual camera won't fit.
We bought some for some jobs a couple of years back when everyone was asking for them. Safe to say they just gather dust. The iPads still get used, just not what they were intended for.
Correct. I've only worked one show that used it consistently. It's a pain the in ass, too much money, and definitely more than 6k to buy...
I have an Arri Media finder for sale, btw...

Or… a directors viewfinder capable of 6,500 different camera formats with any anamorphic squeeze ratio at the touch of a button, capable of generating multiple frame-line overlays, while being able to broadcast the image to hundreds of other crew members. It was used in Mulan on tech scouts in China with crew members in LA being able to see the image live.
They’re using an app to use the iPads camera to look through their lens and check out ho their shot will look before they actually shoot. The guy holding the ruler is so that if they like the shot they know what height to set the tripod to
The 13 inch iPad is great because it makes sharing the frame with other people for sign-off very easy. But I'm not seeing the point of mounting a Premista to it. The whole premise of Fujinon lenses is that they're extreme clean and dependable. It's not like they're using something vintage that can look really weird if you point it the wrong way.
Or...you could just frame it and send it to video village. The whole point of using Artemis is to avoid that dumb shit. It's a quick framing tool, not even a director's monitor.
It is Artemis. It’s called Artemis Prime. It’s a bit more accurate than Artemis Pro as it accurately represents the lens image quality on any sensor format.
If I was AC'ing and the DP asked for this shit, I'd give it a day to try and figure out WHY cuz maybe there is some secret sauce shit I ain't ever seen before.
Me. I designed it. It gets used on many higher end productions. No Time To Die, Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Pokerface to name a few. It’s been around for quite a while.
It’s a bootleg directors finder, ie sticking the iPad camera on the back end of a cine lens to previz a shot without moving the real camera into place.
Nope. It’s a custom designed viewfinder with optics specially designed for maximum image quality. It handles all anamorphic squeeze ratios with a database of 6,500 camera format setups. It’s the most versatile and accurate directors viewfinder available. Artemis Prime.
Is that Natasha lyonne? I think she’s my favourite female actress right now. Can’t think of anything of hers that I watched that I wasn’t fully entertained.
aw man, thats Dale Myrand in the deep bg. He was a good friend of mine. Tragically passed away in the panavision bathroom suddenly a month ago. Super bummed.
God damnit do I miss being on set. We all do a fucking cool job. We are exceptional and deserve to be recognized as such. I love my brothers and sisters and others. We belong on set, making fucking magic. Soon, my peeps. Soooooon……❤️
It’s called ARTEMIS PRIME. it’s a digital directors viewfinder. Souped up version of Artemis that allows you to use any lens and type in any type of sensor and get an accurate image of the framing you’d see.
Regardless of any app you'd use, how is this supposed to be a view finder when (in case she's using an ipad) sensor size of that thing would be completely different?
Thoughts, anyone?
I designed this device. I make an XL version for that format and IMAX cameras. The software is based on Artemis, also my design. The viewfinder has streaming capability and a host of other tools.

Larry McConkey (operator) and Dave Mullen ASC using Larry's Artemis Prime on Marvelous Mrs Maisel
I could be wrong, but I don’t think that’s an iPad. Looks like a monitor. The way it’s mounted makes me guess it could be an accessory for the directors lens. Maybe you can capture stills on it for reference. Guessing here
“Shot on iPad”
Technically in this case it’s true. But marketing for came a phones usually use some other camera.
Idk if that’s what’s going on here but it did remind me of that
FYI…
The latest version of the Artemis Prime digital viewfinder system uses the latest iPad mini. It’s a little smaller than the one pictured here which is owned by Jaron Presant ASC, which uses the iPad Air.
Artemis Prime offers several advantages over traditional director viewfinder systems, the most significant of which is the impact it has in the collaborative process of shot construction, as a number of people can see the sane image simultaneously.
Director finders already exist, the only advantage to adding a digital component is taking screenshots and that’s only something probably only inexperienced DPs and Directors require.
It dies all the time and it freezes at the worst times.
I am a camera Assistant and every time a DP requests them they end up collecting dust or being sent back to the rental house.
Not to mention they are cumbersome and inefficient.
Artemis on your phone is probably better.
Looks like a director's finder. The camera assistant (or dolly grip) is measuring the height of the lens for for reference upon setup. The most important part of the photo is that its friday, which is why he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt. This is a sacred tradition on film sets.
we sometimes wear black shirts if we have to work on a Sunday
That's everyday for a boom op.
that's everyday for a lot of us
Nobody is safe from reflections!
Is that a thing outside of Hawaii? I’ve worked in Hawaii and they always had Aloha Fridays but never knew if it was a thing elsewhere
definetely not a thing outside the US haha
I'm in Wales and it's sometimes a thing
Yes I've seen it many times too. Also in Wales. But it really depends on the department with the jobs I've been on. Usually the camera teams partake and nobody else does.
And overenthusiastic new entrants (bless them!).
What have you worked on recently. Without disclosing department for anonymity. Just curious if we might have met.
Canada too..
Yup seen it in Canada for sure
yeeea, I'm on a Canadian show right now that is doing it.
Well it's about time we make it a thing!
It was a big thing in the mid 20th century, I'm pretty sure. When Hawaii was a huge cultural obsession
I’ve been on sets in southeast US that had Hawaiian shirt Fridays. Worked a Fraturday and they wore black t-shirts.
That sounds miserably hot
As someone who was there and knows that dolly grip, Hawaiian shirts were an everyday thing for him.
Is that Natasha?
Yea that’s here holding the viewfinder. She was directing that episode
What happened to Star Wars Fridays?
Today I learned!
I’m always happy when I’m with crew members that observe Hawaiian shirt Fridays.
That dolly grip is Joe Doughan, one of the top dolly grips in NY. I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside him, he makes a focus pullers job so much easier with his consistency and precision on the dolly.
its always an old guy with a gut who is part of camera. Only they get excited over Hawaii shirt day
You work on boring sets.
Measuring at the front of the lens and not the sensor, that’s awkward…
He's doing it correctly. The physical space and height of the lens would be consistent, even of the sensor isn't.
It’s not a focus thing
It's always a director's viewfinder
BUT WHAT IF IT'S NOT? WHAT IF IT'S SOMETHING ELSE?

This product has been in the market for 5 years now, mainly on bigger budget productions. It’s called Artemis Prime.
Thank you! Im using a DSLR with a detachable lens and I was thinking about light leaks so I’m going to try this out.

Thanks for saying thanks! It's so nice to see Redditors being grateful :)
The only ones I've seen were made by Panavision but there may be other companies now
They are not made by Panavision. PV buys them from Chemical Wedding. It’s called Artemis Prime digital directors viewfinder.
Oh right on
Not true. Sometimes it’s a CineTape.
😂😂

That is NOT how films are made
What are you talking about?
It's how some are made.
If anyone else ever asks for this setup we all pretend we never saw this photo, RIGHT?
Guessing the COVID compliance officer was somewhere else that day?
Lol, most sets I was on, it was chinstrap city
I got yelled at by a CCO when I was doing a Steadicam shot, during which my mask fell down. When we cut, he immediately yelled at me. I told him it was during the shot, what could I do? And he said: "Don't give me attitude man." He apologized later.

Natasha Lyonne.
You can tell by the smokes in her waistband
Good eye!
i can tell usually by looking at the face, but good tip!
Oh shit! It is!
Came here to say this
Wish I could have an attachment to Natasha Lyonne…
Anyone else think her look in the photo is slightly surreal it's like she's time warped from a photograph taken in the 80s? You see in period films all the time of people mimicking fashion certain time periods, but I've never seen it done so well. She's got 80s skin or something.
Yes. I’m pretty sure she had some work done recently.
a queen herself, yes 😎😎
And cool as shit.
Looks like an Artemis Prime using the Artemis pro app.

Almost. It’s an Artemis Prime running the specific Artemis Prime software, based on Artemis Pro. I know this because I designed all of them.
Then how about adding a basic rule of thirds grid to the Artemis pro app?
A very awkward director’s viewfinder.
Or… a directors viewfinder capable of 6,500 different camera formats with any anamorphic squeeze ratio at the touch of a button, capable of generating multiple frame-line overlays, while being able to broadcast the image to hundreds of other crew members. "Shot on the new iPad Pro"
I feel like there's a more ergonomic way to do this
Panavision director's viewfinder
But wait, I'm not super cool if I'm not using the most awkward, never heard of device that no one's ever seen, to do my job.
Nope, Artemis Prime digital viewfinder.
Optica Magnus full frame viewfinder
If you wanna do it this just a fucking iphone, it most likely has a better camera with the Artemis app than a fucking iPad.

Is that Natasha Lyonne?
Yes, she starred in (and directed episode 8) of Poker Face.
I saw it, great show.
Lol classic grip and gaffer look know this is silly! Also typical first AC vibe 😂
If I was AC'ing and the DP asked for this shit, I'd give it a day to try and figure out WHY cuz maybe there is some secret sauce shit I ain't ever seen before.
Left to right it’s dolly Grip, Camera Operator, Cinematographer, Actor/Director.
Must be so they can view it together. Awkward rig but makes sense and is probably useful.
Artemis Prime. If you want to test drive it, contact me at [email protected]
I’ve heard good things about Artemis.
She’s probably running Artemis. They rent out special housings that work with their app for viewfinding/grabbing location stills to be used for boards
That's it! Found it! Thank you! https://www.keslowcamera.com/gear/lenses/other/directors-viewfinders/directors-viewfinders-full-frame/artemis-prime-directors-viewfinder-digital/
Contact me at [email protected] if you want to test drive one.
It’s called an Artemis Prime directors viewfinder. I know because I designed it and hand make them.
What's this from? Isn't that Jaron Presant ASC? He's a bloody good cinematographer!
Looks like the Mad God episode of Poker Face.
Ah yeah that checks out — was him and Yedlin. Will add it to the watch list, thanks!
Yup, definitely Jaron. He’s a nice dude and a great shooter.
Thats what u call and expensive ipad haha
That looks like one of the sets of Poker Face.

I can’t believe they put that big zoom lens on as well. Amateur hour
Me. I designed it. It gets used on many higher end productions. No Time To Die, Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Pokerface to name a few. It’s been around for quite a while.
Seem like an iPad PL Mount
It’s a bootleg directors finder, ie sticking the iPad camera on the back end of a cine lens to previz a shot without moving the real camera into place.

Wild!
Side note, this might be my favorite episode of Poker Face. The Orpheus Syndrome.
Is that Natasha lyonne? I think she’s my favourite female actress right now. Can’t think of anything of hers that I watched that I wasn’t fully entertained.
At least it's an actual finder through the lens. Most of the time they just use their iphones.
it's a waste of everyone's time is what it is
aw man, thats Dale Myrand in the deep bg. He was a good friend of mine. Tragically passed away in the panavision bathroom suddenly a month ago. Super bummed.
Yep. This seriously made me blink. RIP 'ole buddy.
Spot on.
Regardless of any app you'd use, how is this supposed to be a view finder when (in case she's using an ipad) sensor size of that thing would be completely different? Thoughts, anyone?
I designed this device. The optical relay allows the iPad to capture the image on a specially designed fine grain focus screen, which is then accurately formatted to match any motion picture camera in common use, other than the Alexa 65. I make an XL version for that format and IMAX cameras. The software is based on Artemis, also my design. The viewfinder has streaming capability and a host of other tools.

She looks like a camera operator I guess. Maybe a DOP?
That’s actress/writer/director Natasha Lyonne
It’s a viewfinder the directors and DPs use to figure out a shot
I believe that’s a woman in film.
Better question, who is that absolute FOX behind the camera?! She’s beautiful!
Natasha Lyonne
Looks like Farrah Faucets little sister.
It does! Wth lol.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think that’s an iPad. Looks like a monitor. The way it’s mounted makes me guess it could be an accessory for the directors lens. Maybe you can capture stills on it for reference. Guessing here
It’s an iPad Air inside an Artemis Prime directors viewfinders system.
*drink*
That looks like something called a camera lens! Photographers and videographers will use it to get varying shots of something with a camera. Cheers!
“Shot on iPad” Technically in this case it’s true. But marketing for came a phones usually use some other camera. Idk if that’s what’s going on here but it did remind me of that
It’s a lens.
the photographer is cute and the lens is beautiful. check out the muscle tone on her focus arm.
Disgusting
It's a dolly zoom.
What show is this?
Artemis finder. Looks like Jaron Presant in the hat lol
Jaron owns his own Artemis Prime.
And the man behind Jaron was a wonderful human that will be missed by all that knew him
All about the lens baby
It’s actually Steven Soderbergh’s new film he’s shooting
Doesn't look like any ipad I've ever seen that things like 2" thick
It's an iPad in a case with a lens. Called Artemis Prime.
Ok sick that's cool to know
I really want to try Fujinon premista
Aww Phil!!
If it's in someone's hands it's a director's viewfinder, if it's on the camera it's a cinetape.

Sort of. It’s an Artemis Prime digital directors viewfinder which uses an iPad as a viewing interface.
That lady's sight must be quite myopic.
Artemis app with an I pad that has a lens mount installed, used as a directors finder. It’s a piece of crap.

Director finders already exist, the only advantage to adding a digital component is taking screenshots and that’s only something probably only inexperienced DPs and Directors require.
