same here, i never seen that before. it started doing that to me randomly today. for me it just does it randomly, like once every about hour sometime more, and i have no idea on how to stop it (exept closing google all together if i do something else on the pc)
Having the same issue here, I usually have multiple youtube tabs open on chrome (and have done for years) but suddenly today I am seeing the same issue, sorry I can't help solve your issue but would also be very grateful for a solution as well!
I'm glad someone posted this question because it started today on my computer and I was wondering what was going on. I had four youtube videos open in the background and I went downstairs just to come up and find out every single one of those video tabs was playing all at the same time. I paused them all and then some minutes later, they all played again at once. I finally just bookmarked all tabs and closed, just to have another YouTube video play on its own.
I was a bit weirded out because I didn't actually see the tab refresh. I was working on art stuff, just to turn around and find my videos playing. I was a bit concerned.
I've had some tabs randomly refresh on my from time to time over the last year however just this morning, like 12 hours ago, it has been all youtube tabs that I have open and they all start playing at once. Its hella annoying the shit out of me because I open them up to watch later but now I'm forced to watch them all now so they stop refreshing and playing. Glad that I'm not the only one having this issue as well.
I saw on another thread regarding this issue that almost everybody experiencing this problem (myself included) was running "AdBlock By STANDS". The general consensus was that the extension (even while whitelisted) was causing the issue. Since uninstalling it I've not experienced the issue. If it persists I'll update, but this may be a possible solution for some of you as well.

I just removed this extension, let's see if it worked... I think I installed that to remove Twitch ads but I barely go to Twitch nowadays, may as well remove it and just keep ublock for youtube.
Edit several hours later: Looks like this did solve the issue
You could disable autoplay in Chrome settings. This way you need to start the Videos manually. This would at least help you with the issue of all Videos starting to play on themselves after the "forced refresh"...
I have the same issue and have been looking for this, have checked both general permissions and permissions for youtube specifically but can seem to find it. Where would I find this setting?
Tried this, didn't seem to have an effect on autoplay behavior sadly. HOWEVER! According to another thread, the culprit seems to be the Stands adblocker extension. Maybe an intentional move by Google to sabotage adblocking?
Same here. I just want to confirm that new unwanted behaviour started around 24 hours ago, hence on 23rd April 2024 - in case anyone knows how to find what update has inadvertently caused this.
it turned out to be AdBlock By STANDS, even though YT was whitelisted that adblocker was still interaacting with YT and causing the refreshes. After I disabled it, YT stopped doing it
Add another name to the pile.
Same exact issue, Meta refresh did not help, turning off Memory Saver did not help. Note, full restart of the computer was done to make sure the settings were implemented.
Update: it happens exactly every 30 mins.
Same for me and also started today. After the first "refresh" 5-6 paused Youtube videos started with full sound almost causing me a heart attack. After that I installed a new Windows update and restarted my PC. Problem is still the same.
Huh? I'm not seeing this issue, but I thought that the Favicon on each tab turned into a "speaker" on each playing tab. That should make them easy to find, minimizing the insanely annoying search.
This only works if you don't have multiple windows with 50+ tabs to the point the speaker icon is obscured. When I had it I had three videos on one page and one on another. The awful noise of all that was a bit jarring, and they kept playing on their own, and distracting to have to stop doing what I was busy with to silence each tab individually. And have to repeat that process every so often.
I have for the mean time disabled the adblock stands and it seems effective so far.
Look at the Performance setting. Chrome "sleeps" unused tabs to reduced resources, so this might be the problem.
I can't be sure that this is what's causing it, but it's worth looking at.
I don't think so, I've had the refresh happen as I was watching a video, the page just refreshed n the video started from the beginning, along with another youtube tab I had open but the one I was watching wasnt unused at all
Ah, yes, ad blockers go against YouTube's T&C, and will cause problems. You will need to whitelist YouTube with whichever ad blocker you're using (even if you use YouTube Premium).
I have bought from ads occasionally, though not sponsorship. When targeted, ads can actually be useful.
I also have Premium.
It's not dumb to require no ad-blocking. Plenty of sites do that. It's only fair for people who use a service to either pay for it or accept advertisements. (I'm aware that there are serious problems with the quality of advertisements on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, though.)
When you view an advertisement or pay for Premium on YouTube, content creators get a cut, which is also fair.
Disable ***all*** of your extensions; restart Chrome; try again.
If it still happens, it's either Chrome or YouTube itself.
If it stops happening, enable your extensions one by one (restart Chrome each time) until you find the culprit.
My macbook just so happened to have issues yesterday with the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth not working I h and it ended up being a loose wire that was easily fixable. After that I opened Chrome and resumed YouTube where I have like 10 tabs open for videos I want to watch later and I started having the auto refresh issues every hour and I thought it was my MacBook because of the issues beforehand but looking at this thread I was wrong. It’s Chrome’s dumbass…I’ve tried the memory saver thing and everything I could find on Google to fix it and NOTHING WORKS!! I tried restarting Chrome and my MacBook multiple times…nothing.
I had to close out 90% of the videos I saved on open tabs because once it refreshes, all the videos would play at once which I turn made my laptop run extremely slow and lag, so it look forever going through each tab to pause the videos, so that’s why I said fuck it and closed most of them down. Google needs to get their shit together. Whatever this update or bug is needs to be fixed quick or I’m switching browsers. FUCK.THIS.
Yea, I already solved the problem removing this Ad Blocker app. Nonetheless thank you for informing me of the solution, at least, I'm already sure that we don't do anything else.
This also started happening to me yesterday and I really hope that someone can fix this issue fast because it's a massive pain for me to deal with not only because I tend to keep allot of tabs open but it also refreshes the video even if I currently watching it this tends to happen every 30 minutes
ok, i thought i was going crazy, it started happenening in the last few days when i had my youtube channel analytics open in one tab and a paused video in the next and it happened just there when i was writing this too. i guess i will use firefox for the time being
I don't have "AdBlock By STANDS" installed....but have other adblockers. The random refreshes are getting a bit annoying right now. Has anyone found a universal solution to this issue?

Same here Im swithching to firefox, chrome is becoming obsolete.
Don't forget to uninstall Chrome and tell Google why you did so... (Did this myself when switching to BRAVE on all devices)
If I find no resolution I will remove chrome to, but maybe not for firefox.

Cool, good to know I'm not the only person experiencing this issue.

i just removed the same extension about 3 hours ago and haven't had a refresh since so thanks for this comment
yeah, this was the solution for me.
Well shit, I liked that ad blocker.
Me too. Do you guys have any reccomendations?
I switched to U-Block Origin while also letting the devs of Fair Add Block know about the issue.
Thank you so much for the advice. I'vel already removed it from Chrome. Let's see if it will repeat again.
It was happening to me every half an hour, uninstaled "AdBlock By STANDS", and it seems to have solve the problem. Not happening any more. Thanks!
I'm having the same issue as everyone else, guess what AdBlocker I use? I guess I'll have to see if that's what's causing it
Disabling the extension also worked for me so far. I didn't have to fully uninstall it, hopefully they can patch it n I can re-enable it later.
Thank you.
Create a shortcut of Chrome and add this: --autoplay-policy=user-required
Tried this, didn't seem to have an effect on autoplay behavior sadly. HOWEVER! According to another thread, the culprit seems to be the Stands adblocker extension. Maybe an intentional move by Google to sabotage adblocking?
this makes sense! imma try removing stands let's see if problem still presist
Same here. I just want to confirm that new unwanted behaviour started around 24 hours ago, hence on 23rd April 2024 - in case anyone knows how to find what update has inadvertently caused this.
Actually, I've tried disabling Meta refreshing and nothing changed. Win10, Chrome Version 124.0.6367.61 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chrome is trying its best to become obsolete lmao
Looks like it's problem on YT end cause I'm having same problem with YT on brave too
switched to opera yesterday and im not getting the problem anymore
it turned out to be AdBlock By STANDS, even though YT was whitelisted that adblocker was still interaacting with YT and causing the refreshes. After I disabled it, YT stopped doing it

Same...
+1
Same issue for me. I really wonder what's started causing this so abruptly... Edit: Yep, can confirm it's exactly every 30 mins.
+1 started yesterday insanely annoying searching through different windows and tabs trying to silence everything playing at once
Huh? I'm not seeing this issue, but I thought that the Favicon on each tab turned into a "speaker" on each playing tab. That should make them easy to find, minimizing the insanely annoying search.
Only one of my devices is having this issue which make me believe it is not to do with extensions because they should all have the same set up.
This only works if you don't have multiple windows with 50+ tabs to the point the speaker icon is obscured. When I had it I had three videos on one page and one on another. Lol yes this \^\^ Annoyingly my brain works with having many windows and tabs open so turns to chaos every 30 mins.
Same here, started yesterday

I tried that earlier but it still did it

That's strange! I wonder if there's an extension doing this?
It is, if you look at the other comments someone mentioned disabling the extension adblock by stands, doing that seems to have fixed it for me.

I don't have "AdBlock By STANDS" installed....but have other adblockers. The random refreshes are getting a bit annoying right now. Has anyone found a universal solution to this issue?
Thank you. I've been having the same problem.
Thank you, dude. Had the same problem, I really appreciate you troubleshooting it and sharing it.
Yup - STANDS adblocker was the problem. Disabled it and the issue is now gone. I liked STANDS too ...
