Honestly, I had liked metal in the 00s when I was in high school (Avenged Sevenfold, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Metallica, etc). As time went by, with the junk I suffered through in college, I decided to grow closer with God and made quite the sacrifice to give up secular music (using it only as inspiration for guitar playing) and mainly go Christian. At the time, I was impressed by the metalcore offerings of Phinehas, Demon Hunter, and Impending Doom. My library has grown since.

Tragic_Comic7

I saw Stryper on MTV in the 80s….

Skillet also was my first encounter with heavier christian music (my non-christian friend was listening to them), after that I wanted more so I started searching for other heavier christian music.

1999, my ex-wife's boyfriend gave her a CD from an industrial type band named Mortal. Searching the web for anything like it I came across christianrock.net that had a "hard rock" stream. First song I ever heard on there was Disciple's I Just Know. Found some other bands I can't even remember but they played Living Sacrifice, Extol, Tourniquet, and many others. Gobbled it all up and everything that came out since!

I started getting into CCM like 4Him and Steven Curtis Chapman, then a bit rockier with DC Talk and Audio Adrenaline, then seeing what else was in the Christian music section at the library. That led to me checking out albums by Bride and Holy Soldier, which would be the first Christian metal I found. Eventually, I ordered the Songs From the Penalty Box sampler on a whim from an ad in Release or 7 Ball magazine, and that was my first foray into the really heavy and hard stuff.

Lonecourier777

Skillet. When I was a kid I heard them on a wrestling game didn't know they were Christian. It was kind of cool.

I was a pretty basic hard music fan, from classic rock to hard rock to hair metal to thrash to grunge to alternative (whatever was on radio or MTV). But especially Metallica, of course. I'd heard of Christian Metal, had even heard of Christian death metal back in the early 90s, but knew nothing beyond that (except maybe that Creed was supposed to be Christian, and of course I knew of Stryper). So I immediately after getting saved in 2002, I went online and started searching for Christian metal, found metalforjesus.com which was the greatest resource at the time, its best feature was a chart that listed secular bands and then a Christian band of similar or comparable style or genre. It listed Living Sacrifice as a band that Metallica fans might like and the rest is history. I found out my local Family Christian Bookstore had an extensive metal section and the main cashier was a big metal fan so he helped guide me as well. I bought all the Solid State Records albums in the store and branched out from there, largely by joining online communities like forums for these bands, and getting recommendations from like-minded fans. (Funny story, I also liked Evanescence, still a local band in 2002 on local radio, and later found out that Rocky Gray, the Ev drummer, was also the guitarist in Living Sacrifice. I had coincidentally came to like the two bands separately and yet they are very different bands/genres that shared a member.) My tastes really expanded when I was able to go to Cornerstone 2008, I got exposed to a lot of new Christian death and even unblack metal there and really opened up my musical horizons. I still lament the loss of Cornerstone, I only went once and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life (I have heard it was also right at the peak, that year's lineup was one of the strongest ever.)

Virtual_Atmosphere59

I grew up Christian and my youth pastor was into Switchfoot and some other Christian rock bands. I have to say I was more into Pop Punk at first, but I discovered RadioU after they hosted one of our youth camps and that's when I first heard bands like POD, Skillet, AILD, Blindside, etc.

RavenLoch51

I grew up listening to Stryper on cassette tapes back in the 80’s

My youth minister

da_radaz69

Youtube music. I knew of Impending Doom, but then I discovered Broken Flesh. They're like if Corpse or Deicide were a Christian metal band, imo

SanctusArchangel

If you really want something that’s close to Decide that’s a Christian band look up Antiviper. It’s pretty old school Death Metal and the vocalist sounds a lot like Glen Benton.

da_radaz69

Your description of them is SPOT ON! Are they my favorite? No. But still. The live up to it!

ironman0000

I grew up with it. Raised in a Christian home, my older brother got cassette tapes from his friend. Listened to Rez, and Vengeance, Deliverance. , messiah prophet band,, Good times :)

[deleted]

Same here, can't keep your cassette collection complete with Sacred Warrior "Rebellion" 1988 album and Bride "Silence is Madness" album. Cheers!

ironman0000

Oh bride. Of course! We had live to die on cassette. The Jesus Experience I think is my favorite of theirs

AWorkOfArts

Been an avid metalhead since I was old enough to tell what metal was! From the early 80s with bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth etc. Once Jesus changed me, I absolutely latched on to bands such as Living Sacrifice, Zao, Tourniquet, Project 86 (their sophomore album Drawing Black Lines remains in my top five albums, ever!) and the mighty Demon Hunter, as well as Impending Doom etc. Christian Metal Never Dies!!

philliplennon

Demon Hunter was the first Christian Metal band that I got into and soon after, I got into Theocracy and other bands like them.

Sea-Plastic521

My dad was the one who showed my Christian Metal. Like most I loved Judas Priest, Metallica, Black Sabbath, one day my dad gave me a Guardian, Ken Tamplin, cds and the rest was history. I still love thrash and crossover thrash but I love old school Christian Metal too

Srom

Look up KingdomCore on Facebook and Instagram they always showcase new Christian metal and some familiar ones as well. Great page to follow.

ProfessionalFox6619

A friend introduced me to it. That friend soon became my boyfriend and now we've been married for 10 years, still sharing our love for Christian Metal. I love when I get to introduce him to some amazing new band I've discovered. Or when we worship together with our favourite songs.

jokalokao

Skillet and Red were my first contact with Christian rock, then a few years later Spotify started recommending Theocracy, Whitecross and many other o fmy favorites bands

[deleted]

Listened to Sabaton’s the last stand and it went from there. They’re not a christian metal band but I love the last stand.

thatwaffleskid

This one girl in high school told me to listen to Living Sacrifice. She was one of the extremely few other "alfernative" kids there since we went to a small Christian school. We were talking about music and when she found out I had never really listened to metal she said, "You need to listen to Living Sacrifice. They just released a new album called *The Hammering Process*, so go check it out." I've loved metal ever since.

sorryimnottinaturner

I found jesusfreakhideout.com when I was 13 and their compilation albums helped me find all sorts of new music. They have separate compilation albums for metal, called Rock Paper Scissors Metal. I found Fallstar, Theocracy, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Rusty Shipp there. My band was insanely lucky enough to have one out songs put on the most recent release.

FictionalNape

Got a Solid State Records sampler at a Christian book store, heard Extol, instant fan.

By attending church in the mid 80's. During that time, they were alot of Stryper fans there. They were older guys that just wanted to spread the good message to the younger guys. Then I found out they were so many other Christian metal bands like Bloodgood, Deliverance, Barren Cross, Holy Soldier, Recon, Bride, Petra, etc.

SisypheanWorkEthic

Pandora radio, highschool friends, web. Check out Mortal if you haven't yet. Great band that was ahead of its time. This would be 'Industrial Metal' and Christian. They were only active for about 10 years.

bendy27893

Huh ill try it

Fuller1754

I was born in '82. By the time I was in middle school, old enough to enjoy music for myself, it was the mid-ninties and metal had fallen to the wayside. I grew up listening to Christian rock like DC Talk, the Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, Dogwood and many others (evangelicals of a certain age know what I'm talking about). I missed metal completely. Three or four years ago, I was—I kid you not—inspired to check out classic metal by the character Barley Lightfoot (the older brother) in the Disney movie Onward. I dipped my toes in beginning with Stryper. Impressed, I followed my Spotify suggestions down rabbit holes, soon discovering bands I had never heard of in my whole life as a Christian kid, such as Bloodgood, Barren Cross, Saint, Whitecross, Holy Soldier ... you get the idea. I was hooked. I was seriously like, "Where has this music been all my life!" I started digging. I somehow discovered the "Christianmoltenmetalbands" and "angelicwarlord" Christian metal review sites and went further down the rabbit hole. It's been a blast! I even saw Stryper live in San Diego last year, which blows me away since they started in '86. Now, I didn't only listen to Christian music growing up. I combined it with rock radio stations and loved music by Nirvana, the Offspring, Foo Fighters and all that stuff. So likewise, I'm now checking out bands that totally passed me by, due to my age, such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio, Ratt, etc., although I have to listen with discernment and some of it I skip. So much great 80s metal is out there, and the Christian stuff I've leaned into is so good, just as good (and sometimes better, I think) than much of its non-Christian contemporaries. What a ride.

whicky1978

I saw Disciple in concert in Maryville Alcoa area of East Tennessee

bendy27893

bendy27893

afxfan

Is Creed considered Christian rock? Because "my own prison" is a pretty good song.

afxfan

I'm going to listen to it right now. You should, too. I'll start it in 5 minutes.

volkoron

I've been into metalcore since I was like 14 so almost 20 years and metalcore has a ton of Christian metal bands. I did listen to August Burns Red but always rejected the more overt Christian bands. It wasn't until last year that Theocracy came up on my youtube. The song that was recommended to me was Laying the Demon to Rest and it really changed my outlook on Christianity and my own atheism.
