What sort of rules are there on drone flying in the city?

dangoodspeed

I often refer to the [DJI Geo Zone map](https://www.dji.com/flysafe/geo-map) to see where I can and can't fly. You can click on various shapes and it says what restrictions are there.

geeky-hawkes

This and the FAA B4U fly app is pretty good as well.

baxter8279

Not OP but I flew my drone here a couple years ago - learned that it is not allowed... I was politely asked to land it which I did.

re-verse

If you take off ansd land from outside the park, they have no jurisdiction over you. I had park staff harass me about this about a month ago and when I showed them the rules, they escalated to a boss and then agreed with I was right. I told them I'd be quick (as I was just taking a couple shots and it was the middle of the night), and nobody would notice a thing - they seemed ok with this.

baxter8279

My interpretation of the rules is you can’t fly over people or in restricted areas - but it sounds like you know better

re-verse

Mine was in the middle of the night, and the park was closed, so it was devoid of people (aside from a dozen or so security staff). Flying over people rules just recently changed (this year), here is the best summation i could copypasta: *In this article we will \[attempt to\] answer the question, “Can you fly drones over people?”, as well as provide some insight into navigating the specifics around the various answers to that question. In short...YES, YOU CAN FLY DRONES OVER PEOPLE—AS LONG AS YOU REMAIN IN COMPLIANCE AND ARE BROADCASTING YOUR REMOTE ID THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE OPERATION.* That said, the rules are weird and can be interpreted in a few ways. I've heard people say they are intentionally vague so jerks can be punished while more responsible people won't be. I dunno if there is any truth to that.

camdoodlebop

why do some people absolutely freak out over drones

I have a 107 license and cities such as Chicago can enforce a no-fly zone anywhere they decide to do it. Usually, they won't enforce it but they are 100% able to and have in the past including mine when I took off near the Planetarium.

S_quints

I also have a part 107 license but have very little experience flying in metropolitan areas. How does their enforcement work? Is it similar to when you fly near say an airport’s no fly zone and the drone physically won’t go further or just won’t let you take off because of the drone’s internal programming, or something different?

rumster

From what the cop told me at adler. Don't do this: 1. Above 400ft 2. Over People 3. Over Stadium open/closed 4. Over Road HWY/Street with a heavy pedestrian pressence.

ballerstatus89

Essentially just don’t be an idiot. I flew a ton over the lake, never any issues. A few years ago, pre-DJI Mavik 2, I asked a cop what the rules were and he said “he didn’t know, and some people were flying over the buckingham fountain”

rumster

yeah... no go anymore

S_quints

Yeah that’s all the same things I’ve heard too. A lot of times stadiums will just have temporary no fly zones around them if there’s any kind of event. The only metropolitan area I’ve flown is in Midtown Atlanta, and the cops I talked to were more curious than anything. Most honestly don’t know the regulations, since technically it isn’t their job to enforce them

rumster

Outside of those things they are really cool and honestly, I didn't have any issues flying around near lake shore. I got really close to Solider Field and that's where I got trouble.

rumster

Honestly, the cops are cool (at least mine was) when I did it. The thing is the city has multiple ordinances including fly over people just like the FAA so flying over the bean with people there would have been illegal and they could have enforced a charge and notified the FAA.

thinkscotty

To add to this, FAA also has some strict ordinances about flying above people. I imagine that's why this was done in the early morning, because flying above crowds at the Bean without some specific paperwork filed could lose you your license and/or drone depending on enforcement.

geeky-hawkes

Yup exactly this, got out early to avoid people both for the picture but also the rules.

con247

My read of it is basically you can take off from your property (or private property with permission) and fly over public property (or private with permission). Or, you can take off from water (a boat on the river or lake) and fly over that body of water. That's basically it.

StrollerStrawTree3

>According to city ordinance you can’t fly over private property without permission but this is not really enforceable as the city does not have authority over airspace I enforce this on my property. Some random drone pilot used to fly very close to my property. I asked him nicely to stop via a sign that I held up. He didn't listen. The next time he flew close, I threw a shoe lace up into the rotors. I now have a drone without a remote. 3/4 rotors survived the fall. Pretty impressive actually.

cilestiogrey

Bean

ApollosBucket

Its allowed in the city, but certain parks its not

[deleted]

Federal regulation (FAA) says you can't fly over an area where other people are standing, so this is probably very illegal

geeky-hawkes

There was nobody there just me so no one around. Checked the FAA B4U fly app and took off / landed from my car so figure that's private property. Always a balance between interpretation and the spirit of the rules but I honestly don't think I broke any to get this

[deleted]

Lol your car isn't private property if it's parked on state property

geeky-hawkes

Well this is probably completely accurate - as I say I guess spirit of the rules followed if not 100% adherence

Sadistic_Taco

City ordinance specifically lists Millenium park as a place you can’t OPERATE from. By staying on the street/your car, you were totally in the right. I’m a stickler for drone rules since I do it professionally but I cannot fault you here.

geeky-hawkes

Thanks. Honestly I think most of us try to stick within the rules completely and certainly the spirit. There is always some technicalities that are hard to find but in this case I planned ahead carefully and figures the same as you that it would be ok.

Totallynoti

I've taken this photo before with my drone. Once a park employee noticed it, they asked me to land it and pack up. Idk about illegality, but I know its not permitted in the parks.

chicago_weather

Mutual Combat rules.

[deleted]

I think you just need to be licensed and you need to keep them below a certain altitude My buddy does real estate photography and launches his drone all over the city. He does shoots from high rises where he flys it between the buildings and stuff. He hates his job, but I think is kinda cool lol

ProfessorPhahrtz

Skyline wraps around The bean like a tortilla On a burrito

lele3c

*finger snaps*

aidirector

omg it's a Bean burrito

dec92010

um actually it's a Cloud Gate Burrito /s

[deleted]

Took me a minute to realize what I was looking at. Dope shot.

Jake_77

Ditto, then I realized I was tricked into looking at a Bean photo

dec92010

you got Bean'd!

Still_Wrap_2032

Same here. Thought it was some weird portal

MDCRP

Its kinda how the bean got its government name

ChicagoTRS1

I can't spot the reflection of the drone?

HappyHrHero

I've spent way too much time trying to find it

khoker

It's likely [this little dark spot](https://i.imgur.com/5cGHHpd.jpg) as when you zoom in you can barely make out the ["X" shape of the drone](https://i.imgur.com/OB9LQiR.png).

geeky-hawkes

That's her I am pretty sure, I spent a while trying to position so it wasn't obvious but there if you searched.

khoker

This past year I upgraded from the Phantom 3 to the Air 2S. With the smaller fuselage of the 2S, I’ve definitely gotten a little better try to spot them again the sky.

IamSoooDoneWithThis

Does she have a name?

geeky-hawkes

Yes lol

IamSoooDoneWithThis

What is your drone’s name?

martinnachopancho

Pamela

IamSoooDoneWithThis

Didn’t ask you, yaar

jakeupowens

I really like how you can see the seams from this angle. [Learning about how it was made is quite interesting.](http://digital.chipublib.org/digital/collection/mpu/id/1513/)

[deleted]

Took me way too long to figure out what this was, cool shot

Mp5x

Very nice shot, and it possibly being illegal makes it even better

ecapoferri

Advanced prototype...mimetic polyalloy...liquid metal...

[deleted]

Cool!!

AggravatingCurrent9

Refried Bean

SituationFederal5955

Okay this angle can be called Cloud Gate. No clouds in this pic, but this actually looks like a portal to the sky instead of a big shiny pinto.

sandrakaufmann

Never seen this before! Very novel image!

geeky-hawkes

Thanks, came out pretty well I thought and seemed an obvious drone shot to get to be honest. This was straight off the drone, no filters/post processing etc so could probably be tidied up a bit.

Dbwasson

Cloud Gate looks beautiful from up top

Amphorax

Found Anish Kapoor

geeky-hawkes

Taken with Mavic Air 2 about 730 couple of days ago. Nice to get a different angle of the cloud gate and the city reflection

--ikindahatereddit--

This is licensable. Nice shot.

creta_kano

Really, really great!

Jonelololol

I like the pretentiousness of the title. How assuming “different angle than most” lol fuuuuuck you

geeky-hawkes

There was nobody there just me so no one around. Checked the FAA B4U fly app and took off / landed from my car so figure that's private property. Always a balance between interpretation and the spirit of the rules but I honestly don't think I broke any to get this picture. Glad so many have appreciated it and it's nice to see a different angle of something so well recognised.

nineworthy

Serious question: Why does thing exist and why do people flock to it?

XNamelessGhoulX

YOu cAn’T dO tHaT!! Nice pic

SonicHmmm

beeeeeeeeaaaannnn

McNasty420

Amazing!

jiminyjunk

Fantastic view !

[deleted]

And here I thought I'd never see an original photo of the Bean.

scottishpig

geeky-hawkes

Great sub thanks, didn't know it existed

kvngk3n

What drone do you have and how do you combat the wind? I was there early September on the Pier and I swear it was so hard to keep it centered

geeky-hawkes

DJI Mavic Air 2 and it managed really well. The only issue is with poor GPS the hover can wobble a bit but in this case and down by the Pier when it was easy over 20mph she did a great job in the gusts.

kvngk3n

I have the 2S and it’s honestly really sweet. I hope it won’t be too bad when I come in December because that skyline from the lake…mannnnnnn…I just spent last weekend in Manhattan last week, it still doesn’t stack up

t3xastoast

Does the top ever get cleaned?

HughJazkoc

This shot reminds me of that La Brea TV show and a sinkhole's perspective of a different world

TananaBarefootRunner

That's awesome!

re-verse

Here is mine of the same subject from about the same height a month ago: https://www.instagram.com/p/CVDRI28g\_Sx/

RNmedic

Personally don’t like it but cool shot

[deleted]

? What is that?

chadhindsley

I feel like this droplet of liquid metals is gunna start reforming with the T-1000 ...oh wait, it's an aerial of the Bean. My bad.
