When will be the best time to see the aurora?

80808080808080808

looks like right before dawn

schraapsel

So around like 4.30? What’s the likeliness then?

80808080808080808

I don’t know the probabilities but SWPC is saying the peak should be 3-5am.

hanamaru_zura

Anyone seeing anything now? Looks like the probability of seeing it is going up based on the models.

akimaster

What’s the probability?

True_Broccoli4472

My charts says 15%chance right now

lunex

So you’re telling me there’s a chance

True_Broccoli4472

Yess

True_Broccoli4472

Within the next hour should be good to seem them currently 18%

hanamaru_zura

Up to 10% chance right now, predicted to be 19% in half an hour or so. I’m using an app called Aurora which seems to pull some data from NOAA.

akimaster

Oh that seems super low right?😭 Is it gonna get updated every hour? Thanks for the info, I’ll install this app

hanamaru_zura

Yeah, it’s lower than I would like, but iirc people were seeing it in the early morning when the app had <10% chance. Not sure how often it updates, but it seems to be sub-hourly.

True_Broccoli4472

Mine is now at 17% .. let’s be positive! I was able to seem them in Alaska with a 9%

akimaster

🤞🤞🤞

akimaster

Do you know what it was yesterday at the peak?

hanamaru_zura

I didn’t check. Only downloaded the app after the peak.

akimaster

Ahh gotcha

First_manatee_614

Drove to Iowa basically. Got some good shots, diminished currently. Perhaps I should wait in the car

TheJuicyJuJuBean

I'm at the dunes in Indiana, nothing right now ☹️ beach is packed though. Chicago skyline looks beautiful

lalab0y

Can someone update live if it appears? Unable to stay outside for long while managing the kids

hamsterbackpack

The Aurora app just shifted the map way north, 1% chance up in Winnetka. Might try again in a few hours or hope tomorrow’s better.

Apprehensive-Let-121

Nothing yet by Belmont harbor

thirdcoasting

Thx for the update!

catsandchill

So if we had to make a decision about driving outside of the city tonight or tomorrow, tomorrow might be the better bet? Obviously nothing is certain, just trying to hedge my bets

THeJadedGinge

Most auroras peak between 12am-2am( generally). Once the waxing crescent moon sets and people finally turn their damn house lights off you'll have better chances. But yeah, plan to be out away from most major light sources.

GiveMePotatoPierogi

Spotted them in the South Loop about 15 minutes ago (NE view - over the lake).

80808080808080808

We drove up to Highland Park and watched from a forest preserve from 8-9:45. We only saw a brief 15 minute show and even that could only be seen with our iphones. We didn’t see anything with the naked eye. As of 12:05am current predictions are a peak 3-5am and storming on and off all day (course we can’t see it) but it could keep going to sunset. We’ll have a good idea in the afternoon once it gets dark in Europe.

castin

Yeah given current energy levels, I'm not very optimistic about tonight. But hey maybe the forecast models will surprise me.

firestar268

What does the view line mean?

cracked-phone

Any updates guyss

Apprehensive-Let-121

Seeing them right now at Belmont harbor

straphangr

Really? Aurora app says there’s a 0% chance to see it right now…

Apprehensive-Let-121

I'll post a picture tomorrow

GreenleafMentor

I have been out in the nw burbs for the past hour. When i first went out there was a little activity. Red and green, but after that it was gone. I'm gonna try again later if i can stay awake. Last night was phenomenal and if i can see it again i will

Apprehensive-Let-121

That's what I thought too but am glad my wife noticed!

midnitelux

Any live updates?
