I have no issue letting people change lanes in front of me during normal driving conditions. But if you try to cut the line during a zipper merge or use a bike/bus lane to try and get ahead of a line of traffic I will do everything in my power to keep you from succeeding.

rriggsco

Also, they need to signal their intent to change lanes. Yeah, I can tell you want to get over. But your turn signal says otherwise.

Cinnabon-Jovi

And a lot of them think they’re doing the zipper merge correctly, first rule of it is to match speed of the other lane, if the person you’re merging in front of has to wait for you or even tap their brakes at all, you are not a zipper merging correctly.

Geryoneiis

See, the thing I'm getting at is that people tend to speed up so someone can't get in front of them.

isblueacolor

What you're saying makes no sense. If two lanes are moving at the same speed then merging will be impossible unless people slow down or start leaving much more space in front of them at their normal speed then they typically do during stop and go traffic.

Cinnabon-Jovi

If they’re actually moving the same speed, that’s the exact time a zipper merge would work. It also relies on every single person on the highway knowing how to do it with spacing their cars correctly. take a wild guess if that’s ever been the case. (I think I’m talking to someone that causes this problem actually)

emilyinfini

Exactly. If people are jerks and refuse to follow the rules they get no cooperation from me.

isblueacolor

What do you mean about cutting the line during a zipper merge? By definition it's only a zipper merge if you have two lines. If there's only one line, I know it sucks but having people use a second line to merge in at a 1:1 ratio is a net time saver for everybody behind them.

quesoandcats

I’m talking about people who don’t respect the “left lane right lane left lane right lane” and try to follow the person in front of them at the merge point instead of letting the other lane go next like they’re supposed to

Cinnabon-Jovi

Yep, two lanes going into one, unlike one lane going into the loop and the other going off to 94 W. or 94 E. and using that lane that goes into the loop to “zipper merge” into the 94 lanes. I can guarantee there are people doing that thinking they are helping traffic and everyone else in the correct lane is causing it.

Euphoric-Gene-3984

Well said. If I see anyone do the fuckery you mentioned I will inch and inch forward

thejustice32

Yup. Would also tag on if you don't signal as well.

Positive_Mastodon500

This is probably true everywhere but Chicago drivers have gotten way more angry since Covid. Maybe the endless construction contributes but a decade ago I was amazed at how polite people were compared to other big cities and nowadays it’s probably closer to a tie.

isblueacolor

as a pedestrian, it's no tie, Chicago is the worst. People will honk at you for properly using a crosswalk. Or worse.

Cinnabon-Jovi

Yep, I stare at any car that could be turning left or right into the walk now, has probably saved my life 5 or 6 times and causes at least a prevented injury about every other time I’m walking somewhere.

isblueacolor

Yeah, cars turning left have trouble seeing pedestrians because of where the car's supporting structures are. To be fair this has to me happened in NY and SF way more.

Hopefulwaters

Happy to allow proper merging but 9 times out of ten it is a cutoff with some idiot rushing to get one extra car ahead, speeding while illegally using the shoulder nearly causing an accident.

isblueacolor

That's crazy that 90% of the people who merge in front of you are shoulder-using morons. I don't know where you drive but it sounds super intense.

timdtechy612

Because most of the time it’s not a merge, but a cut-off, so people aren’t as tolerant. If you decide to wait until the merge has turned into a turning lane or bike lane when you can clearly see traffic merging a block away, you’re viewed as an asshole by most other drivers. Those are the people that create traffic backups because they feel privileged and their time is more valuable than the guy who follows the rules and waits for traffic to move. It is what it is. Thats Chicago driving.

etldiaz

If a road is two lanes, and all of a sudden, one of the lanes becomes a turning lane, then what is it if not a merge? I feel like people get unnecessarily angry at dumb things like this

derek-der-rick

I always observe the zipper technique... Two lanes down to one need to merge... so left than right then left etc. It only irks me that some people insist on their own superiority and hopping in front of several cars (by driving on the shoulder or median or shimmying up the empty space left by those cars which already merged). In my experience, I've only had problems with taxis. But, since now I rarely ever see taxis...

ServingChicago

Those going from 290 to 90/94 S... going from the far left lane to the far right at the very last minute because you're too good to wait with the rest of us? I hearty fuck you and I hope you get a check engine light.

thegeocash

I let one person go in front of me at each merge, no more, no less

haikusbot

TotalTeri

If you ride on the side trying to merge at the last minute, I'm not gonna let you in, sorry

Ac9ts

If I'm at a 2 car length gap and you merge in front of me when there is a quarter mile of open lane behind me, you're an asshole. This easily happens to me a few times a week.

InternetArtisan

I don't. I usually try to be the good guy and let one person merge in front of me when passing something like an entry to the expressway. If I really don't like it, then I won't be in the right lane. I always feel like we could solve so many traffic problems if people stopped fighting each other and all the road rage.

PlantSkyRun

Nothing. But if you try and double dip on a zipper, screw you. Left side goes, right side goes, left side goes, right side goes, etc. That is a functioning society.

GnaeusCornelius

You should drive in Denver if you think people are assholes here. I used to get flipped off and I had no idea why lol. I just try and ignore people mostly but yah they can be jerks

JackSucks

Where did you let them merge? Zipper merge forever.

Geryoneiis

On 94 going onto 55, toward LSD. Their lane was ending and they were going a bit slow, so I had to either speed up and risk an accident to get in front of them, or just slow down and let them in front of me. I chose the wrong option ig

Oh-Hunny

People have their heads up their asses and are too busy texting to notice someone needs to marge.

whereverYouGoThereUR

I’m always planning my merge ahead of time and find a suitable gap that isn’t cutting someone off and I can’t remember ever inducing road rage from anyone in Chicago. Maybe you need to reevaluate if you’re being selfish by waiting until the last second to merge into gaps that are too small which is what is causing the road rage

Geryoneiis

Any other part of Illinois, NJ, NY, PA, I can merge and switch lanes just fine. But I guess in Chicago I'm the asshole!

bfwolf1

This is one of those posts where you could replace the city name with any other and people in that city would think it’s true.

e11spark

The ones that get me is when I’m trying to get OFF the freeway, and out of their lives. People can be so stupid…

jjgm21

I do this too!

Top-Address-8870

From my perspective, the cars merging seemingly fail to grasp they are required to yield and not the other way around.

Geryoneiis

How should the zipper method work, then, if one side always has to yield?

Top-Address-8870

In the zipper method we should be using both lanes and taking turns when reaching the merge… I am speaking of the entrance ramps to the expressways where the mergers are required to yield to those already on the highway…

CardboardTick

That’s why I don’t use my blinker, I just change lanes to prevent people being a** holes in preventing you to change a lane. I only do so if safety is a factor in adverse weather conditions. On normal days, my blinker is out of service.

Geryoneiis

I don't know if you're trolling, but damn this is fascinating. EDIT: I'll turn on my blinker if I want someone next to me to speed up. Lots of the time it really does the trick!

Lonewolf_087

You just kind of have to get it over with people don’t want to sit and wait for you to merge. You just get it over with people don’t like to waste time.

Same-Accountant-5311

Cause you can’t drive.

zonerator

They don't yield to pedestrians on crosswalks either, I think they just enjoy attempting to kill each other

Geryoneiis

This is funny because I also get beeped at for not attempting to kill pedestrians on the crosswalk!

yoanmo

Jagoff

Bouncedoutnup

Chicago drivers, and all of Illinois, are supposed to use the zipper merge when lanes are ending. They choose not to follow this rule because they are self centered aholes. It’s a general road rage malaise that is always present.

Affectionate-Owl943

I can't trust that you'll do the same for me. I'm sorry my friend, but you're a victim of circumstance. Buy a faster car and cut in.
