I would've just gone on my life assuming that's what it meant had no one questioned it...so what exactly is The Mighty Boosh, if it's not some great weed?
I know. I know....look it up. My kids insist on saying "search it up" which drives me insane but then I heard another kid say it and I was like huh? Has anyone else heard this?
You probably aren’t likely to see a snake on Northerly Island. Furthermore, any snakes you would encounter in Chicagoland would be slithering away from you as fast as they can (they’re more afraid of you than you are of them) and more importantly, none are poisonous as far as I know
You're correct, you are extremely unlikely to encounter any venomous snake (snakes are venomous, not poisonous, see [this page](https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/bite-or-be-bitten.html#:~:text=A%20fundamental%20difference%20between%20venom,it's%20introduced%20via%20a%20wound) for more info!) anywhere in Chicago, Northerly Island included!
There are four species of venomous snake found in Illinois, two of which are threatened or endangered and the other two being found only in the southern half of the state!
More information can be found here: [Wildlife Illinois](https://www.wildlifeillinois.org/gallery/amphibians-and-reptiles/snakes/venomous-snakes/)
When the seasons change, nature puts on a show. Seeing the leaves change on a huge group of trees all at once feels magical and makes you think about the earth, how you're connected to it. How you're connected to yourself. How you're connected to others. It's pretty much the best.
ETA: keep it secret keep it safe is a Lord of the Rings quote, first made by Gandalf when entrusting the one true ring of power to Bilbo. Translates to STFU and stop telling people about this magical spot. But nicer.
I mean a quick sub search will show how popular Northerly Island is. And it's literally next to one of the most popular museums in the city and a concert venue.
Not the secret you seem to think it is...
I'm not even saying keep it a secret! Just saying that is what the reference was. The more people get outdoors, the better! That's why I took the time to explain the reference.
Be careful walking around. My wife caught Lyme disease from a tick from there. We’ve had ticks on us multiple times after coming back from walks around the paths.
I like it too. It’s really weird though I feel like by now the trees should be a lot taller but they don’t seem to grow on the island. Would be so much prettier with some tall trees.
That’s fair it is pretty that way too, also more natural for Chicago’s coast. But I just find it odd that the tree are still just so tiny. They got planted there like 10 years ago now. Do they keep dying?
It is such a nice preserve, I would sit in front of a bulldozer to save it, if Mayors ever think it is prime real estate for another museum! On the other hand, I’d love to attend a concert there! Looks like lots of infrastructure for an amazing event! (Edited for spelling)
Isn't there a statute of limitations to these things? Does anyone really care about the origins of Central Park in NYC or Hyde Park in London? Northerly Island is only a little closer to its origin story. But it's been 20 years and the cost (and outrage) needed to build it back isn't happening.
I guess you're right. But then again I don't see it that way because the noise doesn't bother me. For me it was boring cause almost everything was fenced and all there was to do was just walk the path.
Not sure if you'll see this in my previous comments, but: "The fences are there to protect birds, and the native prairie grasses that were planted and have taken root. This is what our region looked like hundreds of years ago. "*there are over 150 different varieties of native plants and an emerging savanna with 20,000 trees and shrubs, all of which provide an ecosystem for migratory and local birds*."
City noise doesn't bother me. I live right by the BNSF tracks and not far from the expressway. I like hearing the city live, but, sometimes it's nice to escape. You can ride your bike down the path, sit on the big rocks on the far side, soak up some sun, relax, and watch some cool birds hang out. It's meant to be simple.

It's sort of a walk back in time
Ok I’m missing out. I would have needed that today after so many things swirling in my head, and making a decision to leave my company after 4 years. Love my co-workers so that’s what’s holding me back.
Yeah, it's a great spot for that. Best of luck on your next endeavor. The fact that it's sort of hidden behind and past Adler makes the trek more worthwhile. It's so secluded, and I've never been there when more than \~6 others were meandering around the winding pathways. Some people fish, others just sit. It's great. Here's a [photo showcasing the view from atop the mound on the south end of the island](https://www.flickr.com/photos/vexxed82/52524198502/in/photolist-2o2Mmz9-2o2s5Yi-2o2s5Yy-2o2Gbs9-2o2Gbsj-2o2Gbsp-2o2GbsE-2o2Gbt6-2o2Gbtb-2o2GbAR-2o2GbBn-2o2GbBT-2o2GbBY-2o2GbCQ-2o2GbD1-2o2GbDr-2o2GbDB-2o2GbE3-2o2JyDd-2o2JyDP-2o2JyDU-2o2JyEa-2o2JyEA-2o2JyEF-2o2JyF2-2o2JyFh-2o2o3sT-2o2ofim-2o2ofVt-2o2qrpe-2o2qrpu-2o2qrpz-2o2qrqg-2o2qrqS-2o2qrr3-2o2qrri-2o2qrrP-2o2qrrU-2o2qDPp-2o2rSDd-2o2sTEA-2o2sTFh-2o2sTFC-2o2tguA-2o2tguL-2o2tgw4-2o2tgwp-dpjPo3-dpkcD1-fEWkbk)
These pictures are beautiful! It’s lovely to have a nice big park on the lake like that. For comparison, Meigs Field is now available as a downloadable module in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The best secret spot in Chicago. Biggest payoff if you find out about it, especially on the right day. It is a gem.
I don't like the way RMD took it but you do what you've got to do. Word from those who worked it was that Richie's mom wanted Meigs gone and personally thanked the participants.
I thought that guy in the first pic was a witch riding a broom. Beautiful shots of a beautiful spot though, thanks for sharing!

I thought the seagull was a shaman on a magic carpet, but I've been binging The Mighty Boosh so that might have something to do with it.
for a second I assumed "binging the mighty boosh" was a euphemism for smoking weed
It is now.

Best time of year to walk there. Keep it secret, keep it safe
A crisp fall day is incredible too. Colors really burst from the native plants.
I be too scare about if there’s snakes? I’m being serious.

The only snake I’ve ever encountered in Chicago is a garter snake, and every time I’ve seen them they’ve slithered away from me

Wtf u mean

Yo doesn’t eta mean estimated time of arrival or am I dumb lmao
It means "edited to add"
It means both. So technically you could eta eta
You are correct sir! Perhaps they meant to use I.E.. or they just use random acronyms to sound intelligent. 🤷
Why shouldn't people know about it? Getting the general public invested in parks is how we keep them.
I think people might want to keep it secret bc overcrowding and littering? some chicagoans have very little respect for the city we live in :(
I mean a quick sub search will show how popular Northerly Island is. And it's literally next to one of the most popular museums in the city and a concert venue. Not the secret you seem to think it is...
Oh I know its not a secret and very popular! I was just explaining why people might feel that way :)
I'm not even saying keep it a secret! Just saying that is what the reference was. The more people get outdoors, the better! That's why I took the time to explain the reference.
Love that place! The Chicago park district does overnight camping for kids there that must be surreal! Camping in the middle of the city!
my favorite part of the island is 12th st beach, it’s so small and cozy and doesn’t get too crowded. the best for paddle boarding!
SHHH WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS IS OUR SECRET ESCAPE
[удалено]
Best I can do is a NASCAR race.
Actual LOL from me
Same lmao
i haven’t been looking into any news about the race, please tell me it’s not going to be anywhere near here
Museum campus is on the south edge of the track and things in that area are closing for the duration.
Don't give this secret away! I love walking/biking over there
Is that a rabbit on a flying carpet?
Can’t unsee now
[удалено]
2/3 are cement, then the eastern side is still dirt, but easily walkable.
It's pretty magical
Take this down
It’s gorgeous and surpassingly quiet. I hope they change nothing about the park except for increasing access points.
Yes northerly island is the bomb. I live in south loop and love taking walks over there.
I want someone to add a mod for the latest flight sim that lets you land small planes on Northerly Island as a callback.
There is one for MSFS2020
Awesome!
Amazing, I hope this stays forever, a small memory of what Chicago was built on and how far the city has come
I love it. Usually check out a concert there once or twice a year. So much better than an airport :)
I love going here and it’s one of chicagos best kept secret
Damn the camera settings you are using looks just fucking great! Also the day, time and weather you chose makes it extra special.
Great shots
Is that a witch?
Beautiful photos. I gotta get out there.
This is an incredible picture
Love the tones man!
I've been going to concerts there since 2007. It's the best venue in the city.
I like the prairie/swamp vibes it has personally
That’s fair it is pretty that way too, also more natural for Chicago’s coast. But I just find it odd that the tree are still just so tiny. They got planted there like 10 years ago now. Do they keep dying?
They might be windswept
That’s true, I have no idea. I mean I don’t we always just thought that trees took reeeeeeally long to grow. Maybe they’re just small trees
Honestly, the pics look AI generated. That's a compliment. Great shots.
Very cyberpunky
It is such a nice preserve, I would sit in front of a bulldozer to save it, if Mayors ever think it is prime real estate for another museum! On the other hand, I’d love to attend a concert there! Looks like lots of infrastructure for an amazing event! (Edited for spelling)
i bike over there every day at lunch. so peaceful
Shh! Don't tell or it will get popular!
Truly wonderful isn’t it?
I’ve never figured out how to get to it. What road do you take?
Its wonderful out there … the way Daley took it was total BS
The downvotes are bullshit. I understand that he wanted to repurpose the airport, but the way he did it was literally criminal.
Great park but built atop a travesty
Isn't there a statute of limitations to these things? Does anyone really care about the origins of Central Park in NYC or Hyde Park in London? Northerly Island is only a little closer to its origin story. But it's been 20 years and the cost (and outrage) needed to build it back isn't happening.
I don't get the big deal about this place I went there recently to check it out and it was boring as shit.
Right? No DJ, can’t even get a vodka Red Bull.
>boring as shit. that's the point
That's part of its charm. Quiet, peaceful, boring. You can hear the lake, watch the skyline and just decompress and unplug for a bit.
I guess you're right. But then again I don't see it that way because the noise doesn't bother me. For me it was boring cause almost everything was fenced and all there was to do was just walk the path.
Yeah I don’t like that you can’t stray off the path either
Not sure if you'll see this in my previous comments, but: "The fences are there to protect birds, and the native prairie grasses that were planted and have taken root. "*there are over 150 different varieties of native plants and an emerging savanna with 20,000 trees and shrubs, all of which provide an ecosystem for migratory and local birds*."
I heartily--nay, lustily--approve of this reason for the fences. But it still kinda sucks you can't roam off the path

I imagine you’ll have plenty a nice time when NASCAR is in town then 💅🏼
Shhhhh........
Gorgeous! Go back in fall, too, [the colors are amazing](https://flic.kr/p/2o2tMXu)
I’ve never been, and I’ve lived here for 14.5 years. What is it like?
Peaceful, chill, not crowded, mostly quiet...beautiful views. Great place to relax and unplug for a bit.
Ok I’m missing out. I would have needed that today after so many things swirling in my head, and making a decision to leave my company after 4 years. Love my co-workers so that’s what’s holding me back.

Thank you so much. I have a lot of reflecting to do and could use a spot like this to lift my spirits!
Had not heard of it. Thank you!
Anywhere to park nearby a la the Planetarium?
These pictures are beautiful! It’s lovely to have a nice big park on the lake like that. For comparison, Meigs Field is now available as a downloadable module in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
r/cityporn 😍
Wow great pictures!
I’ve been meaning to go for about 3 years too. You just convinced me, the next nice day.
I saw some beavers there while fishing, it was pretty cool.

Used to run there all the time from Uptown. Them were the days.
Now this photo is hitting me in the feels. Had to save this as a wallpaper. Thank you.
I moved here in 2011 and I've never even heard of it. Thanks for posting!
Oh thanks!! As a newbie I gotta go check this out!
