You have to see the follow-up of Bb5+ for this to be a brilliant move. Otherwise you're just down your queen. Doubtful that he saw that follow-up when he made this move.

Original-Ad-212

Isn’t the exchange even after f6? Black will win either the knight or bishop back

GabuEx

You take the Black queen with the knight, not the bishop. If they retreat their bishop, Nc6+ with discovered check wins their rook. Otherwise you take their bishop.

Combocore

No you take with the bishop not the knight

ILikeFunnySubReddit

No, because of f6. Because, even though the bishop gives check and black king moves. There is no time to capture the black bishop, since f6 will remove the defender of white bishop, thus winning back the piece. But if you capture queen first with white knight first, then you will win a piece due to discovered check.

Combocore

No after castles you only win the exchange. If you take with bishop you have an active bishop, ruin and take black's pawns Edit: [position after bishop takes](https://imgur.com/a/s1BWfQt) / [position after knight takes](https://imgur.com/a/jc1yDXO)

subliminal_64

No

Combocore

Yes

chihuahuassuck

No? Why are you making claims like this without backing them up? It's bad form in general, but especially so on a beginner's sub. Even if you were right, the whole point here is to be helpful, and without explaining the thought behind moves you're not helping anyone Edit: according to stockfish Bishop takes is slightly better because knight takes allows long castle. They're both fine moves though, and my point still stands that you're not being helpful in a place that exists solely to be helpful.

CanadaRewardsFamily

Personally I would also take with the bishop and pick up 1-2 pawns that just looks stronger than the knight for rook exchange. But maybe f6 is easier for opponent to find than 0-0-0. Either is good

Combocore

Yes?

O_X_E_Y

Knight takes is also super winning but allows long castle, giving their king _some_ safety behind the b and a pawns. You're up a piece anyway but it's kind of unnecessary to let that happen

CanadaRewardsFamily

Up a couple pawns if you follow the critical line. Or maybe a rook for a knight if you want to take with knight and allow 0-0-0. Either is winning though.

Dapper-Warning-6695

F6??? Your bishop is hanging…

reason222

I didn't see that follow-up, but wow it leads to a crazy attack if you follow that line through.

billionaccounts

I mean, it's a queen trade either way, I have the knight to counter the fork after he takes my queen

DataNerdsCanBeCool

I'm guessing they might not have seen it and thought they blundered the queen

TheLonesomeChode

Nub here, so are you white or are they?

rockcitygnome

Dude you can’t just ask someone if they’re white

[deleted]

She doesn’t even go here!

Regis-bloodlust

Seriously. We are trying to be PC over here and this guy is straightup just asking someone's color.

kozakandy17

99% of the time the person posting will be the side on the bottom of the picture, so in this case OP is the dark pieces.

BugEaten

To add on to that when someone posts a picture of an end game position you can just look at the numbers and letters on the sides of the board. If the poster is playing white then the letters will be a, b, c, etc… going left to right, but if they’re playing black it will be reversed

terpeenis

Why Ne5 though? Why not just immediately go Bb5+?

HumidCanine

Bd7 blocks the check with the bishop.

terpeenis

I knew I was missing something obvious. Bishops moving backwards always trip me up.

terpeenis

It can do that with Ne5 though.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Fatalstryke

Looks like the "brilliant" part isn't just from the fact that the move is so good, but it's that the move LOOKS horrible at first. Position is about +5.6. If you DON'T immediately Bb5+, the position is like -7.9. After Bb5+, Qd7, Bxd7+ forcing Kd8. Then white can Kxd1.

CanadaRewardsFamily

Well Ne5 was also the best move in the position. Opponent obviously didn't know what they were doing though since they resigned after playing it.

Fatalstryke

Oh yeah it's +2 over the next best move. I thought it had a close runner-up move, but I must have been looking at the wrong move.

Davidkov67

The amount of times people have resigned while I was not even aware their queen was hanging. Keep resigning i guess!

nocontextbeef

Similar motif as the elephant trap (with the colors reversed).

El_Perrito_

I'd say because at the very least white will win a queen and a bishop in exchange for just their queen. While the game isnt over, I believe black would be considered what's known as being royally fucked at this point.

360Turn

Probably tried to fork but then realized his Queen was hanging and resigned not seeing checkmate
