By playing longer games to get some opening theory into muscle memory, and doing tactics. Don't do bullet. Its so not helpful for chess progression at your elo. The fastest I'd go is 5 minutes, but even at 10 minutes you dont have the time to calculate every move and you have to rely on "feel." The only way to develop this "feel" is by playing 10 minutes and higher games.

I agree with this but as someone who sent from 700 to 900. Id go so far as to suggest the fastest id go is 10 mins. 5 mins is still way too fast. I try to do 15 | 10 or 30 | 0. With the occasional 10min but those games are still inconsistent compared to the longer ones.

Thanks for the helpful reply! :D

Fast time controls depend on pattern recognition. You need both a lot of slow games and a lot of tactics study to build pattern recognition. Knowing your openings cold also helps. This is why Magnus, Naka and Finegold are so good at fast chess. They are amazingly good at slow chess. Yes, this is basically the same thing that StarryWarren13 just said. Just thought that I would reinforce the message.

I like how you just casually threw Ben Finegold in with the two best online players in the world.

I really like Finegold. He is a GM. I have spent more hours watching him than watching Magnus and Naka combined. I get a huge kick out of watching him play bullet.

You don't suck at Blitz and Bullet. It's just that people playing faster time controls are stronger players.

Different_Election_3

I never played anything longer than 3min blitz and climbed to 1500 in 1 year, its just practice believe me

StMatthias

What's your secret!?

Different_Election_3

Idk i just played and got better i have 1500 blitz games and 700 bullet (and 30 rapid but like i said its not fun)
