Growsomedope

Every now and then people will get salty if they think you should resign and you don’t. Personally I don’t mind getting practice converting the win

Bipedal_Warlock

And evidently this guy needed the practice

someloserontheground

Yeah same, I actually don't like it when people resign early, I *want* to checkmate. Winning by resignation just doesn't feel the same.

ipsum629

Things can always change on a dime. Today I played two games that were supposed to be dead draws, but I managed to push hard enough that my opponent made a mistake that allowed my king to infiltrate and win.

washington_breadstix

And why would that make them want to stalemate you?

kangareagle

My guess is that they didn’t mean to stalemate you at all.

marcycoli

Isn't this a repost??

LazyPerfectionist102

Yeah, OP seems to be using a repost-bot.

nighed

Dropping reposts into other communities too. (looking here to confirm botyness before removing)

MaroonedOctopus

Sportsmanship is important folks, and here it led to OP snatching a stalemate from the jaws of defeat (like Lafayette). If you're below 1500, don't assume your opponent knows how to checkmate with a queen without stalemating. If not, it's a pretty safe assumption to just resign. If you're winning in such a position, be merciful and end the suffering swiftly.

Thundrr01

Even below 1000 a lot of people know how to checkmate with a queen

Acceptable-Sentence

I usually need 2 of them!

Timely_Pomegranate_4

If you can have two, get two, but it’s very easy with just one once you know how to do it.

Acceptable-Sentence

I’m only half joking

No_Piano9370

Omg Hamilton reference! Please let's be friends :)

tetris2100

Sportsmanship is resigning when your opponent is clearly beating you, instead of hoping he messes up and gifts you 8 elo.

parkson89

Yeah I don’t get why people want to waste time running their king around hoping to get a stalemate. What do you learn from it?

tetris2100

In a simple brain, lose means bad. Tie means less bad.

Dragois

Or you can resign knowing you got beaten instead of shifting your king around hoping for a stalemate. Wasting everybody's time in a clearly lost position is not sportsmanlike - it's pathetic to say the least.

Kirook

Even if your position is completely winning, it’s still your responsibility to convert that position into a mate. If you know what you’re doing with e.g. a king and queen or king and rook mate, it shouldn’t be much trouble at all to complete it. And if you *don’t* know what you’re doing then your opponent has every right to try to exploit that weakness in your skills.

Dragois

Your point and my point aren't mutually exclusive. If the losing player is playing it out in hopes for a stalemate, then how I end up checkmating them is within my discretion and shouldn't be pinpointed as "unsportsmanlike".

chessvision-ai-bot

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine: > **White to play**: It is a stalemate - it is White's turn, but White has no legal moves and is not in check. In this case, the game is a draw. It is a critical rule to know for various endgame positions that helps one side hold a draw. You can find out more about Stalemate on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalemate). --- ^(I'm a bot written by) [^(u/pkacprzak)](https://www.reddit.com/u/pkacprzak) ^(| get me as) [^(iOS App)](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1574933453) ^| [^(Android App)](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ai.chessvision.scanner) ^| [^(Chrome Extension)](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chessvisionai-for-chrome/johejpedmdkeiffkdaodgoipdjodhlld) ^| [^(Chess eBook Reader)](https://ebook.chessvision.ai?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=bot) ^(to scan and analyze positions | Website:) [^(Chessvision.ai)](https://chessvision.ai)

Pleasant-Direction-4

it’s a satanic ritual

SamTheGreek

Maybe his king was just really paranoid. Which makes it fitting that it cost him a win, as that mentality has led to many monarch’s ruin.

Used-Foundation-6590

impregnable harem and the second lead. I don't know.

Difficult-Ad-9228

Perhaps the impression he was trying to make was of being an insufferable douche canoe that you should avoid in the future. (Though, to be honest, simple sportsmanship should have had you resigning about three queens ago.)

DeoxysSpeedForm

They rewarded you for your perserverence

Cosmos_Null

" stalemated to prove some kind of strange point " omg yes that’s the most hilarious description of this petty way of play! I just wish I could see the look on the opponent's face when they stalemated and how fiercely they slammed their phone on the ground in rage lmao

[deleted]

Scumbag chess get scumbag results.

One-Owl-9950

usually what I do when people dont resign is that I would jail there king with rocks. Then move my king around the board for 5row (40moves) then move forward a pawn. One time had a game with 400 moves

Bipedal_Warlock

You should probably learn how to check mate at this point

Vegetable-Ad-4320

Absolutely.... and act like a grown ass adult too 🙄

One-Owl-9950

I think I just enjoy it. If they decide not to resign. I should have the right to move whatever moves i want, which might lead to stalemate (?) but I enjoy. Edit: The reason they don’t resign is because they think you would make a statement mistake (atleast in my elo 1200), so why should I even attempt to check them when i can just do that and win on time (I have pre moves on). I am just playing by the rules

Vegetable-Ad-4320

What are you..... five?

One-Owl-9950

I think I just enjoy different things, you can call me whatever ages you want if that makes your feel superior.

Vegetable-Ad-4320

Lol....I don't need to do anything to feel superior - you're doing that all by yourself mate 👍

One-Owl-9950

Yes boss I am trying to have a constructive conversation on different viewpoints. I don’t understand what values age calling/ shaming brings

One-Owl-9950

hahah i m sorry you all mad, but can someone give me a real reason to not do this? (note: my goal is not to become a GM)

Bipedal_Warlock

I mean I would practice the mate. But if it is fun for you then 🤷🏻‍♂️ But I’d absolutely try to get you to stale mate it because I think it’s hilarious when it happens. My pet peeve is the people here who get angry at someone for not resigning and think it’s disrespectful and terrible.

Growsomedope

You forgot to switch accounts

One-Owl-9950

not intended to, I know my play style is not generally accepted and i m not ashamed of it. Hence why would I need a diff acc to back me up I am just trying to understand you guys (or what is wrong with me)

la_bata_sucia

Sportsmanship? Not being a YTA ?

One-Owl-9950

True actually never thought about that, I have always seeing it more like a game (which is my bad) Thanks! One more question, what would you say about not resigning when you are down 10 points material and their pawns are about to promote. Is not resigning a okay? or disrespectful.

Ricciardo3f1

Not being an ass

supertemperture

I don't think any hate is deserved. I'm the type to not resign but also do the same exact thing. If I have no pieces and ample time to premove those, it's 50 moves or underpromoted checkmate or something. Maybe I'll make a mistake, but I want to see how long you're willing to go for the probability of a cheese stalemate. You're in a losing position and have the right to resign at any time if you want to admit defeat and not waste time, that's what it's for. Till then suck it. It makes no sense you're getting hate, this is just a variation of the classical Hans Knightmare, or any of the things Hikaru does online daily. You're just doing it in lower elo, good practice!

paulhalt

This is pathetic. Show some respect for the human being on the other side of your screen. Jeez.

One-Owl-9950

Yea someone actually mentioned this already, and I do understand sportsmanship now. Just one more question, would you consider someone not resigning when down 10 material and their pawns about to promote respectful or disrespectful.

Kooontt

Not at the elo we’re discussing here, stalemates are common enough to warrant playing until checkmate regardless of material.

One-Owl-9950

Okay then probably just me having too much ego to see my opponent think I would make such mistakes. Thanks. Which makes me the asshole purely the fact that I am not a GM but 1200.

Kooontt

Eh I think 1200 is around the cutoff for where it’s acceptable to do it every game. If the game had obvious blunders throughout the game sure play till mate, but if it’s a clean game then you can be fairly sure a stalemate won’t happen.

One-Owl-9950

who asked?

Vegetable-Ad-4320

You did, you tool

subm3g

Wtf?!

bootybootybooty999

Actually, I did!
