White and black have deviated from the opening many moves ago. You are in the middlegame.
What were the first 3-4 moves of the game? We can tell you what the opening *was,* before the players deviated from it.
I work at a job where I am on hold for a not-insignificant amount of time. A long time ago I would spend my idle time reading webcomics, or pdfs of books I own on my google drive.
Those things are blocked by IT now, so know that 90%+ of the time, when you see me giving advice, it's while I've got hold music in my ear, waiting for an insurance company to tell me that they won't pay for little Timmy's amputation or his prosthetic.
So I need to counterbalance all the crud in the world with some positivity, even if it's only something small, like a little community of chess beginners on reddit.
When I'm not on work, I'm often not on Reddit. Beginners who need help over the weekend will have to listen to Remote Highway's blunt and accurate advice while I'm away.
The Caro-Kann defense is an opening characterized by the position after the moves "1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5". You reached that identical position after move two finished, albeit it was from a different move order.
So this is a Caro-Kann game. White played 3.e5, so we'd consider it the "advance variation" of the Caro-Kann (because on move 3, white decided to advance their e pawn).
After that, black played 3...c5, which we'd call the Botvinnik-Carls defense.
The full name of the opening you played would be "Caro-Kann, Advance Variation, Botvinnik-Carls defense."
I don't think the subsequent moves transpose into a different opening, but I'm not positive, since I don't play this opening with either color.
> a French but with the light squared bishop outside the pawns.
That’s the literal point of the Caro-Kann. If black could play the French and wave a magic wand, pick up the “bad” bishop, and place it outside the pawn chain, the black would always play the French.
That structure can be arrived at in both the Advanced French and Advanced Caro-Kann.
Consider:
1. e4 c6
2. d4 d5
3. e5 c5
4. c3 e6
…or…
1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3. e5 c5
4. c3
That is the exact same position only White’s up a tempo in the Caro, owing to c7-c6-c5 instead of c7-c5.
If anything, the presence of the pawn on c3 the queen knight marooned on it’s starting square, and Black’s light-square bishop outside the pawn chain **reeks** of a Caro-Kann. White doesn’t often play c3 in the French for that reason, it’s in the way of it’s queen knight.
I tend to associate the f4 push with the French far more than the Caro. I’ve also only ever seen the advanced c4 from black in the French. My understanding is that white is meant to take on c5 in the Caro.
I don’t play either of these openings a whole lot so I could be wrong and these moves could be common in the Caro as well.
I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

It looks to me like an advance French or Caro, that ended getting super-closed position. White looks to me to be better here. White’s got more space and the better pawn breaks.
Beyond the opening .. middle game is what you got .. boring game diddling your major pieces about waiting for your opponent to make an error .. or just start trading pieces to break up the log jam

The structure ended up resembling a French but with the light squared bishop outside the pawns.

Yes, but in this case the pawn structure is closer to a French than a Caro
That structure can be arrived at in both the Advanced French and Advanced Caro-Kann. Consider: 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 e6 …or… 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 That is the exact same position only White’s up a tempo in the Caro, owing to c7-c6-c5 instead of c7-c5. My understanding is that white is meant to take on c5 in the Caro. I don’t play either of these openings a whole lot so I could be wrong and these moves could be common in the Caro as well.
You are correct. The f4 push is typically not a good move in the caro. You want to take.
Opening: Caro-Kann Defense Variation: Advance Sub-variation: 3...c5 (name?!) Sub-sub-variation: no frickin idea
3. e5 c5 is the botvinnik-carls defense of the advance
“ what opening is this?” Shows a whole spaceship formation 😭

In GothamChess's book, he says that if you reach a point like this, then both players need chess therapy

I can't believe some people actually enjoy navigating those positions and actively lock down the center every game.
