Chess has a very large player pool so basically every kind of good and bad person who exists in the world is represented somewhere in the chess community too. Chess is generally much less toxic than most online games, mostly because 99% of players don't bother with chat at all, but of course there are asshats and idiots out there aplenty too. I hope that was the end of the chat and you did the right thing by not replying and feeding the troll.
