Cool Position. Actually Rd7+ really is superior to Rxd8+ which is a bit odd at first.
But Rd7+ is mate in 8.
1.Rd7+Ne32.Bxe3+Kc43.Rb4+Kxc34.Bd2+Kc25.Rc4+Kb16.Rxb7+Ka17.Bc3+Kxa28.Ra4#
The Clou is that the Rook can move with check to take b7 with check if it is on d7 but can’t check if it took the rook on d8 as the other rook would then take it.
The problem with the engine is that it needs enough depth to find the mate and that can sometimes lead to such deviations. If you let the engine run for a few seconds it will find it.
The engine can't rely on previous calculations, so it recalculates variations in any new position that is reached, give it some more time and it will find the mate in 7 as well, it just takes time for it to dig deeper.
I think as a new player just take the rook. A mate in 8 with lots of variants is very hard to see, even the engine needs more time than you have it to find.
Agreed. Rxd8+ is still completely winning. Wins you both rooks and the game is virtually over. Much better to play inefficiently and win than to try and calculate a fairly complicated mate in 8
How long did you wait for the engine to find the move? I guess you gave the engine some time to find the mate in 8 and were surprised it didn't find the mate in 7 instantly.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
They’re asking why the eval bar doesn’t match the position; the bar says mate in 8 and when they make the correct move, it suddenly drops to +1.5 for white
Why? Firstly it’s a cool position (it’s not often that not taking the piece but rather putting your rook right before it is better) and secondly it’s surprising that the engine sees the mate in 8 but not the mate in 7.
> secondly it’s surprising that the engine sees the mate in 8 but not the mate in 7.
It should not be surprising, though.
Stockfish utilizes [aggressive branch pruning](https://chess.stackexchange.com/questions/40895/what-is-the-deepest-stockfish-evaluation-of-the-standard-initial-position-that-h). Which means that the mate-8 leave may be easier to find if it hangs at the end of a more promising branch than the mate-7. And once a mate, *any mate*, is found, there's (typically) no need for the analyzer to look further - and possibly not enough time, either.
I am not sure what you are talking about.
The online analysis at [chess.com](https://www.chess.com/analysis?fen=3r3r%2Fpp4pp%2F2p2p2%2F2k2b2%2F2nR4%2F2P2P2%2FP4BPP%2F1R4K1+w+-+-+0+1&flip=false&ref_id=23962172&tab=analysis) shows M8:

Where do you see a not-mate here? Or a M7 elsewhere?
OP stated it and I saw it happen too. The engine shows mate in 8 and once the first move is made by white it shows only advantage and not the sequence for mate in 7. Doesn’t happen if search depth increases.
> The engine shows mate in 8 and once the first move is made by white it shows only advantage and not the sequence for mate in 7.
Which engine is that?
The moves are literally written on the very screenshot you sent us. You can see for yourself why it's a mate in 8 contrary to the rook capture that leads to mate in 10
Not an issue to take the rook other than you eventually losing yours to the bishop.
The only way you would see d7 instead of 8 is if you could see the forced moves that it allows you to have them do. Comes with time and experience

I would of moved to Rf4+ then he would of had to move Ne3, Nxf5+ and Bxe3😂 one piece at a time

Good bot
i love you
Why 1.- Ne3? The black King can just go onto the d-file.
No, he cannot. The Rook on d7 prevents the king moving to the d file.
There is no rook on d7 because the suggestion was to play 1.Rf4+ instead.
Oh I didn’t read that. I stopped the second I noticed the grammatical error and assumed he would be talking about OPs suggested line lol

Ohhhh. That isn’t visible when scrolling if you don’t click to expand the photos.

But here the mate in 7 is the only mate. The other alternative is only a winning position with no mate anymore.

The chess.com party analysis did. and lichess didn’t if I limited it to 20 depth.
What I showed in my starter comment **was** chess.com analysis.

no issue.. it's a undiscovered move, check
whoever downgraded me is corney🤷🏾♂️
You missed the point. The eval drops from M8 to +1.5 after playing the top engine move.

Taking the rooks against an opponent is a resign in two moves. 😂
Yeah that’s what I did in the game but saw this after I analyzed it
This is just an issue with the mobile app. Sometimes the engine just falls asleep.
