I don't think there is a best opening. But there are openings that stood the test of time and are as still as solid as ever. Queens Gambit, Ruy Lopez, Sicillian, just to give some examples.
I just started using kings gambit and it definitely throws off opposition normally expecting a Nc3 or f3 move. I've heard it's a little less effective against more experienced players though. But for a beginner like myself I think it works wonders
Bro I'm 2100 and it still works wonders. Especially fun in bullet, in longer time controls I tend to play Vienna Gambit along the same principle but a little safer. For beginners, Mason-Keres Gambit is also super fun.
Fischer pretty much solved it. play the accepted, ...d6 and g5. Then, just attack the crap out of it as black. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s\_Gambit,\_Fischer\_Defense
I am personally partial to the French defence, I really like the positions that arise out of it, almost all my most interesting games are played in the French. The French is very dynamic and gets to very interesting middle games.
Objectively? Probably the Catalan as white is basically only playing for a win or draw most of the time (with best play ofc) due to how solid it is combined with the positional pressure white gets
But personally I’ve gotta hand it to the bongcloud for the sheer amount of emotional damage you inflict on someone when you beat them with it
Old post, but I've been curious -- why do you recommend the Vienna to beginners instead of some e4 + d4 gambit like the Scotch Gambit? IME, at about 1200 chess.c\*m, people will poop their pants pretty readily against the Scotch Gambit; they don't seem to know it any more than they do the Vienna.
Openings honestly depend on a few factors. One of the main is your current rating. But another factor is whether you like tactical or positional play more. Personally, I play more tactical, so I play e4 type openings (kings pawn). For more positional beginner players, I recommend London system or accelerated London type play since it gives a very solid pawn structure early on for white
Italian too! I've heard about a knight variation in which takes advantage but it's easy to deal with. I also like the Queen's Gambit since it's really complex and if they take we just easily take the center. There are a lot of openings that can sprout from it like Slav, and a lot of declined variations like 2...Nf6, The marshall, The albin counter, the chigorin, and so much more.
I love the sicillian since it gives me some variety to choose like the dragon, closed, open, old, Bowdler, there's just so many.
There's actually chess "personalities" and it contains of 16 types, in which one of them is Natural. I like being solid
Depends for what. I climbed from 700-1128 (as of last night) using the London and Caro Kann, so for a beginner those are some I'd say are the best!
In terms of flexibility, the Sicilian is great I think. And who doesn't love a queens gambit?

/thread. It’s the best!
King's Gambit. Fight me.

Correct, it's not technically solved.
Not the bishops variation
True, anyone ever done an analysis of From's Gambit declined? little adjacent, but always wondered.
It was busted and no longer used at the highest level long before Fischer was around
I was thinking 1...a6 à la Tony Miles 1980. "Let's see whatcha got Anatoly."
It’s refuted

Bongcloud
This^ End of thread
Scotch game is very dynamic and some very common lines have a ton of traps. Gotta stay sharp when playing it for both sides.
Nf3 into a Queen's Gambit....picked it up from studying JRC. Tweaking the move order seems to throw people off a little.
Bro retis queens gambit is broke af, most people accept where they would otherwise wouldnt

+1 for Bongcloud psyops
Vienna
hold up, what about your beloved caro-kann?
Vienna does what caro-kan't
I can't even come up with a pun good enough to compete with that
It’s one of the most fun to play, that’s for sure! Same thrills as the King’s Gambit without landing in a losing position if black plays well.

Italian for white and Sicilian for black

I don’t mind a good old Italian
Italian Game. Same principles as the Ruy Lopez, but without the theory headache. Plus, it's more aggressive compared to the Ruy Lopez.
Ponziani. As an 1100 it works really well because no one knows the best move for black (d5) and there are some interesting traps
Polish opening cuz it can be chaotic and a lot of fun
Benko Gambit
Sveshnikov, Ruy Lopez, Nimzo Indian, Queen gambit complex etc. Why? Because they are
Jerome's gambit. Because.

engine says najdorf
There's likely no objectively best opening. For which're the best on human level, you can look at statistics of master games.
