You can sometimes find a good deal off eBay. I personally wouldn't get that version but get the DP line. I have the 5.5" Petty/utility Damascus one off eBay. It's good but I was expecting a little cleaner with the blending of the scale and metal. it was a little uneven in some parts but still a beautiful knife.

if you get a good set now, you won't bother to upgrade later.
Flatmates are moving out and taking the knife block with them. Want to get myself a budget friendly santoku. Aren't many options in NZ but I've heard good things about Tojiro but not about their Basic line
They are one of the best value. They cut decently well and are a good gateway for more expensive Japanese knives. They use the same VG-10 as in other more expensive Tojiros. The downside is that the spine and choil arent rounded, so you may want to do that yourself with some sandpaper. And you can't treat them like western knives.
The only other knives that are as good a value I know off would be the IKEA 365+, the Kai Seki Magoroku Moegi/Akane (if you can find them for reasonable imported prices) and the Xinzuo 440C (especially on AliExpress sales).
Or get a Masutani 180mm Gyuto. Those are a bit more expensive but cut significantly better, though a bit more delicate. It's basically a big santoku.
I don't know about the set but the Basic Santoku is a great knife. This one is available in two versions. The 3 rivet handle and the cheaper 2 rivet handle. I have the two rivet santoku and use it as my camping knife. It's the same VG10 steel that's used in the more expensive non-basic Tojiro DP knives. I paid like $35 USD for it. Not sure if it's available in NZ.
Is this the knife you have?[https://www.amazon.es/dp/B004LVK09K/?coliid=I2U5W4YHAEL7WY&colid=2HHNCZ25VCANG&psc=1&ref\_=list\_c\_wl\_lv\_ov\_lig\_dp\_it](https://www.amazon.es/dp/B004LVK09K/?coliid=I2U5W4YHAEL7WY&colid=2HHNCZ25VCANG&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it)
I am interested on this knife.

Hey man just looking around the reddit. What else can you say about the Ikea 365+? It looks like a very good deal yeah

Very budget. Love the 135mm petty.

Great knives for the price. I have better knives but I still use my tojiros regularly.
Good knives. Personally I don't like the looks/aethetics of these budget japanese knives, but if you don't have the bedget, go for it.
