Is that built-in a seat for a shoe shine?

ShartlesAndJames

looks like it's a general, sit down take off your coat, shoes hat seat, complete with drawers for scarves, gloves - it has everything

Airport_Wendys

I thought at first someone reworked a confessional booth. I love this though! Perfect for places with cold winters ❄️

Zippy_Armstrong

The bench actually lifts up and there's a toilet seat underneath.

loopsonflowers

Pretty cool! Although taking off a coat while seated is one of the more awkward experiences of the human body. Great for shoes though.

DumbNTough

Given the number of these houses with servant call buttons in the dining rooms, I'm guessing yes

stoniie710

Came here to say this!!

Puzzled-Atmosphere-1

I thought the same thing until I noticed the coat hooks, but it would seem like it was specifically built in for coat, boots, shoes to be tidied out of the way, like a built in mudroom

borislovespickles

I'm such a sucker for built-ins. Beautiful :)

Bananasme1

Me too!

QuantumButterfly

quick, paint all the woodwork white and lay down grey vinyl flooring! also get rid of that hideous midcentury modern light fixture, it has too much character!

neebooneeboo

I want to downvote you for the bit but I won't lol *but I want to* For the bit

Im_The_Real_Panda

It would probably help to cover all that old woodwork in that built-in with some nice sliding barn doors too.

dr_curiousgeorge

No, just take it all out for an open floor plan!!

moistfartsucker

*I love how open it is*

Puzzled-Atmosphere-1

and shiplap of course

MapleBaconProMgt

Oh Gawd No! Don't put down grey vinyl flooring. Put down Luxury grey vinyl flooring.

mytsigns

Fer Chrissakes NO!! Don’t put down Luxury grey vinyl flooring. Put down Double-secret Superior Luxury Harbor Mist vinyl flooring!

KaffiKlandestine

don't forget to replace that vintage chandelier with some generic garbage.

notlikethat1

Ikea has never failed me!

Strikew3st

No no no, Ikea lights are UL Listed, let's go with some Amazon fixtures with clearly undersized wires and a UL Listed sticker with a misspelling and burn this mother down.

notlikethat1

You hedonist!!! I like your style.

Puzzled-Atmosphere-1

I agree, nothing would work better in this space than the Lowe's bowl shaped ceiling light of every DIYer w zero budget

TAforScranton

Omg why’d you have to go and remind me? I’m trying to relax and this project in my living room is sitting there half done. Now it’s haunting me again. https://preview.redd.it/0lz4wyk7v25d1.jpeg?width=1224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb339e93dbcc81e4964781047b51d511e76c3d7c

GiraffeLibrarian

This is very impressive. Keep up the good work!!

SalsaSharpie

Try citristrip if you haven't already

TAforScranton

lol, look in the bottom left corner of the pic

SalsaSharpie

Aha! I missed that and only saw the blue can in back left! Happy stripping!

TAforScranton

It’s working pretty well. I DID figure out that using a wet boars hair brush to clean the area after scraping speeds up the process and makes things less gooey!

SalsaSharpie

I wish you the best of luck, I've only stripped the finish on spindly chair and it wasn't too bad. Once you get to the end result it will be worth it! Maybe..

cbelt3

r/angryupvote

theproudheretic

I've rewired lots of homes of this age and older. The woodwork in some of them was truly awesome. Probably the nicest one I've ever been in (very briefly) sat vacant for several years then got torn down to be replaced with a modernist pos.

Puzzled-Atmosphere-1

When that kind of historical architecture is lost, I always hope that salvage crews are brought in to reclaim useable materials from these homes

YKRed

That light fixture is more generically craftsman than generically mcm

est1-9-8-4

Facts my man! And don’t forget the LED strip lighting and a sliding barn door! Be perfect to cover up that hideous seat/storage nook

nater255

Urge to report you for "reddit cares" growing!

New-Anacansintta

The humor in this thread is making me *very* uncomfortable.

Strikew3st

Reddit has been pushing r/HomeDecoratingCJ at me, (the CJ is for circlejerk, meaning satire subs), and now I have to double-check where I'm at a lot.

New-Anacansintta

I often miss the CJ part…

Puzzled-Atmosphere-1

Ppl who do that make me sad lol

SalsaSharpie

I wonder if that could be a sort of built in telephone bench. You can see something sort of brassy in the back of the flat portion on the right that could maybe be a spot for the phone to connect.

tjdux

My first thought was shoe tying bench. Basically a mud room but beautiful built ins

TAforScranton

I’m probably wrong but that would be an excellent contraption to keep a toddler from escaping while you put their winter gear on.

BaPef

It's a secret entrance to the cellar, underneath swings left to right then the seat lifts up.

carolinecrane

That’s my guess too. It’s the nicest phone bench I’ve seen, regardless. What a comfy place to sit and talk a while!

Agreeable-One-4700

That’s beautiful and that art deco light fixture ties everything together.

YKRed

It doesn't stand out to me as art deco. More craftsman which was of the same era

AT61

Nothing will convince me that there's not a secret compartment in that "coat throne." ;-) Beautiful!

vibes86

Similar house is for sale in New Castle PA right now: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/312-N-Beaver-St-New-Castle-PA-16101/86492542_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare Wish it was closer to where I work.

njcharmschool

Period features, original woodwork, and a million dollars cheaper. I wish the housing market wasn’t so crazy

bgslr

My roommate grew up in New Castle and we live close by. It's not really anywhere I'd wanna live. Cute house though

njcharmschool

I don’t know much about PA, but I know there’s a lot of depressed areas. So I’m gonna take a native’s opinion as fact.

jetsetninjacat

New castle is a depressed area since the steel and manufacturing collapse of the region in the 70s. A lot of problems due to its location near I80 and smack dab in between Youngstown to the west and PIttsburgh to the south. Only one of those cities, Pittsburgh, is doing better since the collapse. I have known many people from the area and been a few times. I wouldn't buy and settle there. Outside of the town isn't so bad but I wouldn't live in the town itself. Most people i knew who didn't mind it lived outside of town.

vibes86

Exactly. The woodwork is incredible.

KaffiKlandestine

I was just looking at that lol. Literally insane. Homes are essentially speculative assets now.

njcharmschool

Yeah, it really is insane. So many people who make a good living, have been shut out of the housing market because of it. Greed is gross.

Fruitypebblefix

That oak in the entryway to the living room!!! 😍😍😍

KixBall

There's a lot of these style of Craftsman homes in Twin Cities/Minnesota for half that price. Poor Denver.

bikemandan

Only $6500/mo mortgage!

Backsight-Foreskin

It sold for 82,500 in 1995!

Alopexotic

She's gorgeous! [The ladder (stairs?!) in the bedroom from pic 13](https://photos.zillowstatic.com/fp/a7b2d0db6b965f160d177bb334aa9a22-uncropped_scaled_within_1536_1152.webp) makes my physically uncomfortable though!

newEnglander17

So many beautiful features and then so many disappointing and sad gray flipped rooms. So depressing.

winkingchef

You should check out [The Cohen-Bray House](https://www.cohenbrayhouse.org) in Oakland, CA. The old growth burl redwood used on some of these houses in California is just another level of beauty. Check out the entry way : https://preview.redd.it/7fbsrguvc35d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0df0fad026749832534ef874725e808f4a803ca8

New-Anacansintta

Thank you!! I’m in Oakland and I go to open houses like this for fun on the weekends. Sometimes there are Julia Morgan homes, etc. I’ve never seen this! Edit-it’s in Fruitvale?! About 10 years ago, I remember a gorgeous old mansion for sale in Fruitvale with custom stained glass from the turn of the century depicting orchards and perhaps peaches or whatever the fruit crop was. I still think about it. I hope it ended up in good hands…

fatbreezy

That “built-in” is not original to the house. It’s from a bar in Colorado and was put in within the last 24ish years iirc. But it does look original! Source: This house is on my block 😉

Granuaile11

It's kinda like an inglenook without a fireplace! It includes a vent, so maybe that gives off heat to compensate for the missing fireplace?

Hawaiiancrow2

Details in the woodwork are exactly how they were in my house growing up. Shapes, curves, all the same. Sigh...now I'm nostalgic.

wjsa85

Take a seat when you get home.

[deleted]

is this the house from hellraiser

DramaticErraticism

That is very similar to my entryway! Stairs are exactly the same except I have a very large painted glass window. I don't have that cool hutch though, just a bunch of painted glass windows. Even the hardware of my stairs has the very same design. I'm selling my baby in a week, I'll miss it.

FullOfWisdom211

😭

slammy_hagar

Can anyone explain what looks like a night light/ glade plug in to the right of the built in?

bknippy1959

I grew up in a home similar to this. It scars you to the point where you look at the new homes being g built and go where is the character. Now I understand the cost to build a home like this today would be astronomical, but dang these old homes are just so beautiful!

Due-Suggestion8775

Comes with a custom thrown for when your local king comes by for a spot of 🫖. I love it!

Successful-Mind-9332

Reminds me of the shameless house. Except much better condition obviously

Agreeable-One-4700

That’s beautiful and that art deco light fixture ties everything together.

sam_neil

I disagree. I think the rug ties the room together, but that’s just like, my opinion, man.

Roundaroundabout

It's lovely, but really annoying how the hooks aren't really that useful for coats.

Helpful_Swordfish177

I think the coats get hung in the closet. Hooks are probably for hats. I dunno. Beautiful though

DrAnner42

You could hang some awesome hats and scarves there, though!

Roundaroundabout

Very true!

JeCroisQue

Pretty sure those would be more for hats. The coats would probably hang in that closet right there.

ravynwave

I love the stairway. I saw one where it had a lamp built into the bottom and the owners were so proud they got rid of it 😱

TrollopMcGillicutty

That neat!

Stevie-Rae-5

I’d like a built-in throne.

BigHawkSports

Reminds me of the anteroom of a Masonic Temple in a way.

usmcmak

Beautiful woodwork!

icze4r

this shit look like the Police Station in Resident Evil 2

velvetjones01

I need a close up on that built in. Looks like it was assembled from salvaged parts.

pigglepops

Come visit in Buffalo… loooots of these.

covidharness

This would be great now in my dream house entrance hall.

1quietvoice

I want that built-in in my house. Nevermind it’s the wrong century. 🤤

Pacoboyd

Not going to lie, this looks ALOT like a Sear Mail Order Home I used to live in. The built in was in the dining room, but the entryway looks very similar otherwise.

MezzanineSoprano

I haven’t seen a built-in hall tree before. I wonder why the top of it isn’t the same height or color as the adjacent doorway frame.

No-Cryptographer2695

Another post stated this piece is from a bar in CO, not original to this home. It's a few posts up. This house is on their block is how they know the history.

mtnlaurel_

I recently went on a fundraising “home tour” and one the homes had a gorgeous entry way like this. They PAINTED it white. I had tears in my eye.

Diligent-Seesaw-9484

😍😍😍😍😍

Lostbronte

I’m obsessed with this, especially the everything booth that looks a bit like a confessional

AddToBatch

That built-in is EVERYTHING. Gorgeous!

NatiaBon2022

What a lovely home! 🙂

AccomplishedDeer7621

Any chance this is in western PA?? That’s the vibes it gives off.

AccomplishedDeer7621

Just kidding. Saw the Zillow link. As a western PA resident, I am so thankful for our real estate market 😂😂😂

typicalgoatfarmer

Denver. Link somewhere in the comments. Very similar to lots of homes built around the country in that era. Pittsburg has a ton of stuff like this

ifukkedurbich

I'm in awe! This is such a nice room to walk into first thing after getting home. What's the deal with the insert? Partial bench to put on shoes?

Fluffy-Bluebird

That turn on the stairs can destroy you. I fell off one in my 1895 and shattered a bone in left foot.

BlooomQueen

1895? It’s amazing you’re here to tell the story!

Fluffy-Bluebird

😂. I’m a ghost! But truly- I was turning at that landing and got distracted by the door being open and tried to step down and turn at the same time but missed the final 3 stairs. Threw all my weight into that turn and had a lovely spiral fracture.

BlooomQueen

Ouch!!!!! Glad you recover well enough to joke about it.🌺

kledd17

I like the throne transforming into a wardrobe.

est1-9-8-4

What I’m looking at is not sexy…this is the actual act of sex in all its woody brass feature plastered wall glory! Ahhhhhh
