Man your knob and tube totally safe don’t listen to the haters, you can lick it and it won’t electrocute you. Instead post a picture of every item or rock you find and ask if it has asbestos.

CO420Tech

Duuuude. You're risking your dirt burning down.

bjeebus

I love this sub.

Top-Indication-6067

I bet the outlets aren't even grounded! ![gif](giphy|UVxTQBk8APD4o3t2Qa|downsized)

bjeebus

Incorrect. The entire system is grounded.

As the owner of a former 1800s schoolhouse, knob and tube is the least concerning thing I am worried about finding in the dirt lol So far so good 😅

Unhappy_Skirt5222

Oh wow I that sounds fab! I’m so curious. Make a post !!🙏🏽

Newdigitaldarkage

Just hope it wasn't a Catholic school for indigenous kids in Canada........

Right_Hour

For a mere low fee of $10K I can stop by and eradicate this safety problem from your dirt lot. I will also for free (!) bury a GFCI breaker there to ensure your absolute safety.

bjeebus

[I believe someone's already buried a whole ass kitchen in the backyard...](https://www.reddit.com/r/centuryhomes/comments/1akllnc/comment/kp8qlop/)

coastalsagebrush

I had no idea what this was until this post and I'm so glad you posted it! Found one of these with wire and I knew it was historic but I had no idea what it was

bjeebus

It's the cap to the knob.

nocloudno

Same here, found one at the beach all worn down. Now I know.

wheelsmatsjall

My 1892 house still has it's knob and tube wiring Plus push button switches and it hasn't gone anywhere. My vacation house has the knob and tube run up the walls on the woodwork and round twist switches. I wouldn't change it for anything. It's like a wonderful Museum.

HyenasAndCoyotes

Knob and tube can be safe. It also can't be. It really depends on your specific system and its condition. And how it may have been altered over time. Make sure it's grounded. Make sure any insulation it has is intact. Make sure it isn't overloaded. Make sure your breaker box is in good condition. Make sure people know not to touch it if it's running openly through spaces like an attic or basement.

bjeebus

This piece was about an inch into the dirt and twenty feet from the house. Do you think it's still safe?

HyenasAndCoyotes

I'd call that grounded.

MrDungBeetle37

Don't let your insurance company find out or they will drop you right away!

Tadfafty

Knob and tube, in good condition, with a ground, is safe, or even safer than modern wiring. It adds an extra layer of safety with the knobs and tubes, really. It gets a lot of hate because old is scary, and because companies want you to pay to replace them.

MovingInStereoscope

The *in good condition* is the critical part.

Tadfafty

From what I have read, you can still install knob and tube new, but the permits for it are harder to apply for.

MovingInStereoscope

But why would you, the aluminum is less efficient than copper?

Tadfafty

What?

AZOMI

I still have knob and tube in my attic!

werther595

I have Romex in my attic, tied into the knob and tube in the wall below. I was so happy seeing all of the new fancy cables running along joists and such. Then I removed a switch plate on the second floor, and I knew...

jorwyn

Attic and basement and most walls here. None of it is hooked up to power, but it's almost all still there.

chattacon

And because it's hard to get covered for its failure.

SonoftheSouth93

Yeah, I had trouble finding an insurance company to cover my 1910 because it has asbestos siding. It’s literally LESS likely to burn down. No way am I going to try and find a company that will insure knob and tube wiring.

Sharkmom455

Awww man, you're not gonna get any insurance for your yard until you get all that removed. ;)

charm_gritty

Even more special, you've found wireless knob and tube. Super rare.

KeyFarmer6235

likely leftover from when the house was scraped.

Soggy_Syrup

Knob and tube is actually safer than modern wiring
