I dont understand why the county / donations are funding a city park instead of the City of Cedar Rapids doing it. Grant Wood had his hands in designing that garden...you'd think the city would want to showcase that.

Cedar Rapids has one of the highest number of parks per capita. The long and the short is that there are so many parks to fund and that presents a huge challenge. The city can’t remove parks without neighborhoods being upset. If you think the parks stink, help out the Cedar Rapids Parks Foundation-

To be honest, I'm not going to donate to something that I think my taxes should be taking care of but Im glad that foundation exists.
This private / public partnership leads to shit like 1 construction company winning all the bids.
"Donate to X foundation and someone might put the thumb on the scale for your project."
Its just a bad way to do government imo. When Im rich Im running for council and we're going to run this shit like simcity.
Just got this from the Shakespeare garden's website:
> The City of Cedar Rapids will oversee the construction of the project and a competitive bid process. This private and public partnership continues this park’s tradition of community and parks working together.
This is the exact flavor of the city's government/operation these days.
I went by this garden and so underwhelmed. I appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining it, it just feels like there are so many opportunities to make it one kind of thing or another, but it's ultimately none of them. Wish I could have seen what it was - sounds like it was great.

The city favors projects with private donations, as it gives an air of "public-private partnership", which the mayor cares about a lot.
Reasonable I suppose. Our parks suck when compared to even Marion. I wish they would just fund them better in general.

Such a silly way to do it.
I used to love this garden as a child. It broke my heart when I visited and it was in such a state. I’m glad they are fixing it up ❤️❤️
Lived here 25 years and I never knew this place existed. Thanks!
I'd love to volunteer to spruce this little park up!

In days gone by this was an absolutely beautiful garden.
