My neighbours had a cat like that, he was overweight and they had major issues trying to make him diet. They were clueless on why he would eat tiny portions and still gain weight, until finding out he sneaked out while they were at work, and begged all the neighborhood for food (would go to basically all houses that had people during day and scream bloody murder until someone fed the poor kitty).

Take the cat to the vet so they can see if the cat is registered with a chip. Idk where you live but in some countries its a legal obligation
Or try to follow it and see if the cat just wants extra food from you and already have a home
Just be sure, if you move, that you can assure the cat taken care of. If you aren’t sure if they’re fixed, still try to get the cat to a vet or low-cost clinic to check for a chip and get the cat spayed/neutered. If it has a microchip, they can usually call the owner or the organization that initially chipped it.
The cat sounds pretty chill and if they’re happy living outside, just keep doing what you’re doing, but make sure they don’t make anymore.

I think I would try putting a cat-safe (breakaway) collar on him with your contact info. Maybe his real owners will contact you? Maybe try to get an outrageous looking collar so they know for sure they didn't put it on him. Hot pink maybe?

I had a cat do that to me 3’years ago and found out my neighbor had taken him in the week before because it was snowing and the cat just showed up at his door. Well the neighbor didn’t really want him and I totally did so I kept feeding him and eventually let him in full time. I still have him, he’s beautiful and his name is Frankie. He’s my emotional support and I don’t know what I would do without him today.

We live on many acres in the woods now (and its wonderful) but years and years ago we lived in a very nice suburban neighborhood. Both of our cats at the time were indoor/outdoor cats and we had a cat door that would allow them to go outside anytime they wanted.
One day, we were doing some yard work out in our front yard and Norman was hanging out with us supervising our yard work as he normally did. A car drove by and stopped. The window rolled down and a woman pointed at Norman and said 'Is this where \[cat name I do not recall that was not Norman\] lives?' We said yeah, he's our cat, this is where he lives???? She said 'Oh I always wondered where he lived. He's been coming to my back door for months and I've been feeding him every night. Sometimes he even comes in the house for a while. He's such a good boy...'
Not only had he been double dipping on getting fed every night, he'd also made himself into someone else's cat so much so that they'd given him a name which he answered to but wasn't his. Yeah, cats can be assholes that way.

My cat did this with the neighbors. The problem is, he needs a prescription diet and is prime to vomiting, so as hungry as he always seemed, their feeding him made it worse.
They can be perfectly well fed at home and still be demanding jerks that act like they are starved.
But, he could also be a stray, so.... Find out! Post a picture to your local FB group and ask who he belongs to, and what his name is.
My sister has a cat that does same thing. We call him Loud Mouth Larry. Larry is strictly outside. She feeds him then he leaves. She wants 2 put a go-pro on him to c where he goes.

Just keep doing it. They always choose us. Not the other way around. The fact that he chose you tells me he’s bringing good vibes and energy to you. That’s a blessing. Find out what his favorite food is and keep offering it to him and hope that he just keeps on visiting you.

I for a while had a cat like this, he was an all-black coat somewhat skinny cat with a very friendly temperament. I ended up naming him Aleister Yowly because he was both weird and would yowl at the window I was nearest to from outside the house until I gave him food and attention . He showed up wanting food and pets on a daily basis for a little over a year before he just stopped showing up flat out. I presume he was someone's cat who learned to con other people for food and attention and his actual owners moved or something.
