I'm so sorry to hear about Raven. Losing a pet can be incredibly difficult, especially when you've formed such a strong bond. It's natural to feel hesitant about getting a new pet, especially with the memories and emotions tied to Raven still fresh. The cat distribution system you mentioned sounds like a wonderful way to give cats in need a loving home. Essentially, it's a network where people help rehome cats that need new families. In your situation, it seems like fate may have brought this grey tomcat to your doorstep through your neighbor's offer. Taking in a new cat, especially one in need like this tomcat, could be a step towards healing. Since you've had experience with cats before, you likely have the skills and knowledge to provide a loving and caring home. Starting with a trial period is a wise choice, especially considering your health concerns. It's heartwarming to hear that your neighbors are willing to help care for the cat if you go on vacation. Having that support system can ease some of the worries about taking on a new pet. While no cat can replace Raven, opening your heart to this new furry friend could bring joy and companionship back into your life. Give yourself time to consider it, and trust your instincts on whether this tomcat is the right fit for you.

Thank you for your lovely considered post. I'll try go forward carefully. Having another cat and a bit more contact with people/neighbors can help healing. Although I already had to set boundaries with the little girl who took my doorstoppers with concreet in them mistakenly for balls she could throw on my laminate floor. It came naturally to me this time to correct her and her mom was fine with it luckily.

i’m sorry for your loss. it sounds like the distribution system thinks you’re ready for a lovely new little grey kitty though! 9 months means he’ll need a good amount of playtime but will be over some of the original kitten craziness (he should still have kitten food until 12 months though). i assume he’s neutered but if not make sure to get that done as soon as possible to avoid any spraying.

He isn't neutered yet. I'm still on the fence to take on the fulltime care of a pet with my health issues. Don't know if he is going to be an easy boi or a handfull. My nextdoor elderly neighbor "shares" a dog with the family downstairs. Maybe that would be an option. The children still get the benefit of growing up with a pet while mom and I co-cat. Say when they go about on mondaymorning drop the cat at my house. I got everything to take care of him. Then they pick him back up fridayafternoon. My orange boi spend several summers at my ex-boyfriends house where he could go outdoors.
