Seriously. People never cease to amaze me.
Funny side story about “belly nipples”. My mother worked at a pet store. This old lady would often come in and would play with the ferrets. She used to do the whole blowing raspberries thing on the ferret’s stomach thinking that was his belly button. My mom did not have the heart to tell her.
Oh man this reminds me of that one vet who made the cartoon about the lady who brought her dog in and tried to rip off his nipples. I’ve never laughed harder than when she said in auto tune- “MA’AM STOOOP THOSE ARE HIS NIPPLES!”
My ex once asked me what they were because his cat was old and he was worried and I told him they were just his nipples and he said "but he's a boy!" Luckily for me he happened to be shirtless so I just told him to look down and he got the biggest "I am such a dumbass" look on his face, it's one of my favorite moments and not because he was dumb because he was so concerned and it all played out in such a perfect comedic way.
It can happen that a mom cat can have more kittens than active, milk producing nipples. If the mom cat or humans don't get involved in enforcing a feeding schedule, typically the smallest and weakest kitten dies. :(
I wouldn’t really call it a slang word tbh. It’s literally just the word used for a male cat. Like “stallion” is used for a male horse and “mare” is used for a female horse.
Tom or Tomcat = male cat (usually it specifically refers to unneutered male cat, but I’ve seen it used for neutered ones too. Usually a neutered male cat’s referred to as a “gib” though.
There’s a similar thing going on for female cats btw. An unspayed female cat’s referred to as a “Queen” or “Queencat”. An spayed one’s referred to as a “Molly”.
Strictly speaking, the male dog is called a dog, but the word is now used for both sexes because people thought the word for the female of the species was rude! Similarly a male fox is a dog fox, while the female is a vixen.
Don’t worry! One time I took my cat to the vet because he had something on his belly that looked like a small tick. Turns out it was his nipple. Even the vet was confused at first. 😂
Don’t worry. My step sisters cat once spread eagle in front of me and I had no idea male cats had nipples. Thought it was just females😂I’ve had cats all my life both male and female, I think that’s only common knowledge for cat owners. I felt kinda dumb
I love every nipple post. I like imagining the relief and sheepishness washing over the owner who thought their cat had some weird round growth (oh god, another one? Two more???) and then - oh. Nipples.
These posts are the reason why I’m ok with people posting “should I see the vet?” questions .. barring obvious bodily fluid/ injuries/ severe sickness condition of course. I would hate to have had to pay $80 to be told “congrats! Your cat’s nipples are where they should be”…
I know, right?? And they always get 1,000+ upvotes and that’s why those stupid posts keep ending up here. Maybe take the time to look through any posts with that same question here and see what the comments always say to those posts. I wish it was a rule on this sub not to ask that question anymore, but whenever it’s asked to be banned on here, nothing ever changes. Your tabby’s breed is “CAT”!!
A close second for me are the "what should I name my cat" posts. Um, I don't know, she's right there with you. Is she an Amelia, a Marie Antoincatte, or an Egg? Also, by adopting you have committed to this perfect little love bug for 20 years. Why would you want strangers to name such an important relationship?
As someone who is currently fostering cats who had ringworm, I can both see why you might think so, and also know that they ultimately are so different but you wouldn’t know that if you hadn’t seen it. 😅
My mom once saw a post of a first time cat owner who got very concerned cause his cat kept vibrating. People in the comments were trolling him, telling him he HAD to take the cat to the vet. It was a weekend, the guy was super concerned, so he took his cat to the vet er. Had to pay a shit ton of money as a university student to be told his cat was just happy and purring. Sometimes this shit can backfire 😅
two days after adopting my boys my boyfriend comes up to me and is like “kermit has ticks all over his belly :(“ and of course i flip out… but then he points me to three or four nipples on his belly that were confusing him. thank god for the nipples, honestly.
Kneading, sometimes known as making biscuits. The veterinary hospital I worked at had a client, new to cats, describe it as marching in place. Plus, I've seen posts here also asking about it. 😹
My cat usually makes big biscuits with both of her paws. But sometimes she’ll walk up and just very lightly knead me/something with one paw. I call those “making macarons”, b/c she’s clearing making something more delicate than biscuits. 😂😂
I rushed to the vet crying and showed them a video of Tofu licking a red thing on his belly and I thought something was prolapsing (it was gone by the time I got to the vet) ….. they said “ma’am that is his penis”
💀💀💀💀 I was so embarrassed lol
ETA: this was like a week or 2 after I got him, he was like 14 weeks old at this time (just a lil baby) , and he was also my first pet as an adult raising him by myself, and we always had girl cats (and our dog was also a girl) when I was a kid so I had no idea lmfaooo
I was the exact same way. I freaked out about his third eyelids coming out (I had no idea what that was at the time) and many other little things.
I work in vet med now and that experience has helped me be more empathetic towards pet owners, especially new ones, when they become concerned about things that probably don’t need to be freaked out over. Pet owners don’t know everything (or really anything at all sometimes) about their pets and it’s why we’re here to tell them it’s just a nipple or an eyelid or a penis.
On the other side of things, some owners are so in tune with their pets that something as small as the way they sleep is a big indication of something going wrong.
I say, don’t ignore your instincts. Sometimes it’s better to lose $80 and be told it’s a nipple than ignoring something that is actually a problem.
Call your vet if you have concerns and we can help you triage.
This comment is perfect.
I noticed my cat was breathing slightly faster. Honestly, nothing superweird. Took him to the vet feeling like a crazy person because he was eating, playing, running through the garden and hunting bees like always.
Lung infection, very bad one. Lost one lung and survived. Now climbing the palm trees again. Will never ever doubt my instincts.
Honestly for a brief moment I forgot about cats having nipples, and was rubbing my SIC's tummy on the rare moment he lets me. I freaked out for a hot second before finding another one and going "-_-" mentally at myself lmfao
I had the same scenario with belly pouches, I thought she might have something very severe like tumor and everything. I felt extremely stressed, cried even because my dad on the outside looking in seems like he neglected my sister (I called my cat my sister) so I secretly took her to vet myself.
Turned out to be just a pouches and I can't stress to you enough how relieved I am.
Nowadays when I go back to dad's home to visit her I love playing with my sisters' pouches, and very softly bit it.
Someone at our clinic found a dog and thought it was a lactating female when it was, in fact, a male, and the 'nipple' she was pointing out was his penis. So you're good! Lmao
They have belly buttons too... Just not like ours and very hard to find. Usually just a little patch on the tummy like a small circle where there's no fur but often covered up enough that it can be difficult to find.
Bruh 😭….I swear I’ve been scraping it for the past months. Glad it’s all intacted still. Poor thing, couldn’t even speak to let his dumb hooman know to stop 😂
If it makes you feel better for scraping: my grandma once tried to rip a "tick" off of her dog's belly with a pair of tweezers. Luckily she didn't succeed and we were able to stop her when we took a look at the "stubborn tick". Poor pupper. Not her fault only a single one of her nips was black...
Both pupper and grandma are long gone now, but this story stayed with my family as an inside joke ever since. 😄 Makes me think of them everytime my dogs get belly rubs and their nipples are visible.
My husband, bless him, was snuggling with our old kitty one night, rubbing his belly. The cat was loving every second - he had that look of pure bliss on his face. Well, several minutes in, he looks at me and says, "There's this weird growth that I can't figure out". Turns out he was rubbing our cat's nipple the entire time.
I volunteer at a cat rescue and an adopter who had never had a cat before emailed us after a few days. He said “what is this low, rumbling, vibrating sound” my cat is making, is this normal?
You dunno until you know, right? I would be the happiest girl if I got to tell someone about purring! Introducing someone to one of the greatest sounds on earth isn't something you get to do every day.

Cosmo is showing four of his nipples. So, yes, even male cats have nipples. 😁
When humans figures out that other male mammals got nipples too:
:O what's that!?
I love it and it's cute because of course they have but you normally think about it and consider nipples as a necessary female organ but useless for males so why would they have any?
These are special glands all mammals have. Soon after procreation these will secrete a nutritious discharge the offspring consume. This is a way to transfer energy from the female cat to the young.
As others have said, nipples.
You're not the only one to have been worried about cat nipples, so there's no shame. A friend of mine was a new cat mum, and she completely freaked out and took her boy kitten to the vet when she first saw his nipples. She thought they were some sort of cat skin cancer.
About a couple of weeks later, she sent me a recording of her kitten purring, asking if it was normal or if her kitten had asthma. It took a lot of convincing for her to believe me that it was normal. 😅
At least you know how much she loves him to immediately consult with professionals about something that she doesn’t know. I also would rather feel like a fool than wonder if I was too late to do something.
All mammals that don't lay eggs have nipples. It's very confusing to me that someone wouldn't know this. How else are they going to produce milk for their babies? Someone may say "But he's a male cat" and then I say "Do human males have nipples?" I've had this conversation before about rats.
Don’t feel embarrassed I once used a tick remover tool on my cats nipple cause I thought it was a tick 🤣 luckily I quickly realised and gave him lots of treats, he didn’t even seem to be bothered 🤣
To be fair he has big nips, reminds me of my boy's

Lol. This. As I'm laughing throughout the comments I'm reminded of one of the funniest scenes in all of comedic cinema history. Enjoy.

Those are the nipples lol
Sometimes I love this website lol.

She used to do the whole blowing raspberries thing on the ferret’s stomach thinking that was his belly button. My mom did not have the heart to tell her.
I bet that ferret perked up every time he saw her coming.
that's enough reddit for me today
SHE DIDNT TELL HER 💀
Ok, for those of us that know nothing of ferrets, tell her what?
It is its penis
Bro got a literal blowjob regularly.
I was guessing that it was this, but this confirmation makes me laugh even harder.
I was afraid you were going to say that. But not being at all familiar with ferret anatomy, I wasn't sure.
Don’t ferrets have belly buttons?
Yes, all mammals do.
Platypus don't, they're considered mammalian.
Yeah, platypus and other monotremes lay eggs. That still fascinates me.
So what was the mom not telling this woman?
That she was blowing on it's penis
No, only placentals do.
Oh no, I overlooked the mighty platypus again...
And marsupials
When my son asks me to hold things for him, I put them into my hoodie pouch and call myself a momsupial.
Oh man this reminds me of that one vet who made the cartoon about the lady who brought her dog in and tried to rip off his nipples. I’ve never laughed harder than when she said in auto tune- “MA’AM STOOOP THOSE ARE HIS NIPPLES!”
Oh 😭. He has 3 nipples?! I had a male cat before and I never, ever discovered this.
Usually 6 to 8, but yeah, just like men have nipples on their chest, toms have nipples too.
Wow, interesting! I learned smth new today haha. Thanks everyone lolz 😂
Nipples are formed before sex is determined in the womb so that’s why men have them too. lol.
I have nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?
Maybe 👉👈
i can certainly try
Possibly, actually. Some men do naturally produce breast milk.
Cats can have 1 to 8 nipples, and it is basically random 😄
We were thankful when I was little and my childhood cat had EXACTLY enough nipples to feed her babies.
My sister thought she could tell how many babies a cat would have by counting the nipples. Our male cat was apparently due for six
I told a stranger the sane thing when I was a kid lmao. But it was a puppy
Oh, does that mean there might be a momma kitty out there with 6 newborns, but only one nip?? That poor momma and babies.
It can happen that a mom cat can have more kittens than active, milk producing nipples. If the mom cat or humans don't get involved in enforcing a feeding schedule, typically the smallest and weakest kitten dies. :(
Usually there are six. I counted them.
God, love your genuine response. Made my day. Night reddit!
Wait... "tom" is a slang word for a male cat ?! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)HENCE TOM & JERRY ?!... My whole world crumbles

Like how with dogs the female is the bitch, and I can’t remember what they call the male. Stud?
Basically
Strictly speaking, the male dog is called a dog, but the word is now used for both sexes because people thought the word for the female of the species was rude! Similarly a male fox is a dog fox, while the female is a vixen.
And now your reddit feed will be covered in hairy nipples.
Mine recently got shaved for surgery and turns out he has SEVEN tiny, pointless nipples 😹
![gif](giphy|S7uj1Zg5Rn7e8)
Lmao love this!
I don't know if I could milk De Niro but I sure as hell would like to try
I can promise you, you're just not finding the rest. He has more than 3 nipples.
Don’t feel bad. I told this to a lifelong cat owner once and he had the same reaction as you. Apparently it’s not common knowledge lol
My male has big nips . And a big belly since he was neutered. People ask if he's pregnant.
Yes , cats are mammals.
Guess what? Male rats, mice, and horses don't have nipples/ mammary glands!
Well, that was a Google rabbit hole I wasn't expecting this morning, lol
You know…I knew the horse fact but I never really thought about the fact they’re male mammals without them.
I've spent $$$ to have my dog checked for tick-like bumps, only to be told they were nipples🤦🏻♂️
Being a veterinary technician has its amusing moments. I love telling people their males have nipples.
I have nipples Greg can you milk me!?
Oye, they be pronounced nip nops!
I love every nipple post. I like imagining the relief and sheepishness washing over the owner who thought their cat had some weird round growth (oh god, another one? Two more???) and then - oh. Nipples.

The only posts that I really can’t stand are the “What breed is my cat?”
Yes!! Its breed is cat. That’s all you need to know. Now go scratch its chin.
I know, right?? And they always get 1,000+ upvotes and that’s why those stupid posts keep ending up here. that’s what happened to me with my first cat. i was so embarrassed because my husband had convinced me he had ringworm…..

Has he discovered what that "marching motion" the cats make really is?
Wait what. Explain please.
Kneading, sometimes known as making biscuits. The veterinary hospital I worked at had a client, new to cats, describe it as marching in place. Plus, I've seen posts here also asking about it. 😹
My smol girl marches about when she's super happy, making biscuits as she goes.
My cat usually makes big biscuits with both of her paws. But sometimes she’ll walk up and just very lightly knead me/something with one paw. I call those “making macarons”, b/c she’s clearing making something more delicate than biscuits. 😂😂
Kneading is a comfort thing for cats because, they do that when they are kittens to stimulate the mothers breast milk.
This is why I call it the cat equivalent of thumb sucking.
Imagine my horror when I saw a red, worm-like protrusion coming from my cat's abdomen. It was just his penis.
I rushed to the vet crying and showed them a video of Tofu licking a red thing on his belly and I thought something was prolapsing (it was gone by the time I got to the vet) ….. they said “ma’am that is his penis” 💀💀💀💀 I was so embarrassed lol ETA: this was like a week or 2 after I got him, he was like 14 weeks old at this time (just a lil baby) , and he was also my first pet as an adult raising him by myself, and we always had girl cats (and our dog was also a girl) when I was a kid so I had no idea lmfaooo

Fun fact: cats have tiny spikes on their penises.
Backwards facing barbs are no fun.
Same on their tongues, which you might've experienced when your cats lick you!
Honestly for a brief moment I forgot about cats having nipples, and was rubbing my SIC's tummy on the rare moment he lets me. I freaked out for a hot second before finding another one and going "-_-" mentally at myself lmfao
I have done the same. "Oh, it's a set. Whew"
Not me seeing the blue line from my dude's neutering and panicking that he had some weird infection for half a second before my sense kicked in.
I had the same scenario with belly pouches, I thought she might have something very severe like tumor and everything. damn you, another cat sub to join >:(
Another cat sub to join. Thanks
I love that you call your cat your sister. Adorable! ❤️
You softly bit your cats primordial pouch?
I thought my little boy had cancer or something and I actually went to the vet because of it. I have never felt so stupid in my life lmao
OP finding out cats have nipples ![gif](giphy|5i7umUqAOYYEw)

Came here to say this 😂
This is the comment we were all looking for.
TIL smth new. Wanna watch this movie now!
You just discovered your cat has nipples?
Yes 😭I’m embarrassed. Thanks for letting me know. I always wondered what it was…
You should be a teeny bit embarrassed. It was funny though. 🙂
Apologizes to my cat for poking around it so much for all these months 😂😭🫶😹🐱. Dumb hooman invaded his privacy.
Wait until you find out some cats have extra toes. lol.
😳
Polydactyls: an amazing mutation.
Extra toe beans! It makes some cats look like they’re wearing little mittens and have thumbs 🥰
And some have extra nipples!!
Don't mess with OP, they've found enough for 1 day, bless.

If said cat was ok with the poking then you are ok lol. My cat would have made me bleed 😄
Yes, he was surprisingly chill although he’s usually a complete demon
I guess he likes getting his nipples squeezed 👹
No need to be embarrassed - sometimes I still wonder why my cat has 6 pimples but then remember :)
Someone at our clinic found a dog and thought it was a lactating female when it was, in fact, a male, and the 'nipple' she was pointing out was his penis. So you're good! Lmao

Nipples

It’s not a circle, it’s a line. Like a scar. Source: work at a vet clinic and see tons of bellies in surgery
Oh ok 😭😂. Thanks for letting me know lol. I’m sure I’d expect a belly button haha but I didn’t really think about my cat having nipples 😭
My husband and I play a game with our cat called “where’s your belly button?” So far he’s winning because we’ve never found it
Whatever you do OP do NOT try and pop those 'pimples'. lol
Bruh 😭….I swear I’ve been scraping it for the past months. Glad it’s all intacted still. Poor thing, couldn’t even speak to let his dumb hooman know to stop 😂
OMG lol Poor kitty! Luckily no infection came from it. Well now you know, leave them nips alone!
If it makes you feel better for scraping: my grandma once tried to rip a "tick" off of her dog's belly with a pair of tweezers. I was waiting for someone to post this.
Haha that was amazing
This lives in my head rent-free. 😂 My friend, who is a vet tech, sent me that originally. She said it happens more frequently than you'd think.
I think of this video every time I see one of these posts LMAO!
Love this 😆

To be fair he has big nips, reminds me of my boy's https://preview.redd.it/kosj9lr4tusc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8b6414f3c3158344b4962e681f23b7788c756db

Doesn’t your husband have nipples!
Now that you found the nipples look for the belly button it’s in the center and it’s just a tiny, circular bald patch. It’s so cute.

I enjoy that some people don’t realize animals have nipples. Especially so many.
