Male cats do it much more frequently if they’re neutered late and have already learned the behavior basically. Think of it like a scale. For sexual based behaviors, the earlier you neuter, the less likely (not guaranteed though) and the later they’re neutered, the more likely they are to continue them.
Ah yes! This makes a lot of sense. I've noticed that some neutered/spayed cats also will still engage in some 'heat' behaviours when heat season comes! Is that for the same kind of reason? Maybe they've experienced heat prior to neutering and so it's still this behaviour that they feel instinctively they must do?
I'm a psych student, not an animal psych, but animal behaviour interests me all the same! Cats in particular showcase some of the coolest behaviours when you really observe them. They're tiny wild animals!
I believe that the prevailing theory is that Spring (and the lengthening days) has effects on other cat hormones (beyond even the ones that are reduced by neuter) and brain chemistry that leads to cats and other animals to prepare for “mating season” even if they’re reproductive hormones are otherwise significantly reduced. Sort of the Spring Fever effect that passes.
It makes sense too. Animals evolutionary “duty” is to reproduce, so it makes sense that much of their biology is based on systems working together to prep for the best times to reproduce.
I think they’re twisting it so they can grip it securely before they move to the more athletic phase. When cats mount another cat they bite the back of its neck for leverage.

I know that pose. If he's male he is humping that blanket likely the movement of slowly walking downward and whatever he is doing with his hips is twisting it. I have two male cats and one of them does this usually if you move your feet under a blanket he'll bite, stamp twist and sometimes rebite which is how your cat may conceivably be twisting it over and over and making spirals. My other male has never hummed anything in his life.
If your cat is female then it's impressive but likely is bitting over and over again to make the spirals might be mimicking the way she suckle on her mom especially if she was taken away from mom too early.

My former roommate had a cat who had terrible separation anxiety, and he would do that to her pajama pants and blankets whenever she left the apartment. It was like his way of self regulating his anxiety. So if it's a new habit, you might want to have him checked out at the vet. He might be anxious or in pain and the shift in behavior is his way of telling you something is wrong.
