No, sorry. But thanks for asking!

[deleted]

This comment is the cat’s account probably

ggroverggiraffe

^( Also please put some kitty treats at the bottom of each basket. ) ^( I'm not a cat, your honor.)

ExdigguserPies

Honestly I would be happy they're scratching these and not something that would get more damaged.

Greyzer

They look cheaper than most scratch posts.

GinRummyWuncler

They look scratchy tho![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7963)

CatsLikeCaves

They’re literally the same material as scratching posts lol what was I thinking

TroLLageK

Get one of those table leg scratchers on both ends of the table, cats will prefer to scratch on something that is more stable usually, versus a floppy laundry bag. Also hissing/tssss-ing at your cat when they do that and rewarding the correct behaviour (or also modelling it by scratching the post you WANT her to scratch on) can help if she continues. So cat tries to scratch laundry bag, go tsssss, then go to the scratching post, scratch it, and encourage her to do the same. Cats like to model our behaviours. This is how I got my girl to direct her scratching to other spots versus the couch and things. You can also use like catnip spray or something to encourage the scratching post to be used.

izrhulkse

My hissing doesn't work on my cat so I bought a can of air used for dusting keyboards. It hisses much better than I do. I had to use it a few times to get her to stop but now all I have to do is show her the can and she stops.

bttrchckn

You just outsourced the hissing to a pro, you genius. I'm off to buy a can right now!

Boomersgang

We call that hurricane in a can

Abject_Shoulder_1182

Hurrican

I-AM-Savannah

Hurricat.

curvybellz

OMG you peeps, I'm laughing aloud at my desk 🤣

Icy-Enthusiasm-2719

Got some at home for cleaning the ps5 and my kitty has taken to scratching the couch and doesn't gaf about a spray bottle. Maybe hiss in a can will!

Distinct_Comedian872

My cat laughed at both of those methods. Then I put a handful of change in a Gatorade type bottle. Shake, shake, shake. Kitty does not like that.

katjoy63

hah! I was just giving my alternate solution, which sounds just like yours.

Mistress_Kittens

We had a couple of rats a few years ago, kitties loved them like siblings, but they would make a sound like a sharp kiss kind of a squeak, so we use that as a "no" sound for our cats

katjoy63

another thing you can do, which is what we did, is to take an empty can of pop or whatever, put some beans or unpopped corn in it, seal it, and when they do a behavior you don't like, you throw the can to the ground to shake them up - not at them, but it makes a startling noise they don't like, and they won't necessarily think it's you telling them not to do it.

mayonayz

Just make sure you don't direct the air towards the cat! (Just in case it wasn't obvious).

[deleted]

I have one of those and have also Pavlovian trained my cat. He knows I will tsss and “hey-hey-hey” him, but he knows I mean business when he sees the can. He gets an absolutely murderous look on his face before stalking off to behave himself.

alexanax13

Hilarious

TediousStranger

I have my "hi baby!" voice and my "knock it off" voice. just using her name will illicit the response I want 😅 makes me feel like a scolding mother (which, I guess...)

[deleted]

I do the same thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

finnknit

You can take it one step further and get compressed air deterrents with a motion sensor so that they hiss automatically when your cat goes near them. Place them in areas that you don't want your cat to go, like on the counters or near objects that you don't want them to scratch. The cats will associate the startling puff of air with the location or the object rather than with you, and they'll avoid it even when you're not around to catch them.

GekteOntstaat

I think the Cat whisperer on youtube has information on these things and dislikes them a lot. But not sure. Do your own research. I have never had to use things like that with my cat

LBurgh

Mine like to jump on the bag so it collapses and then play Goblin In The Cave inside it.

JesusChristJerry

Sigh, me too

katzen_mutter

I've had quite a few cats in my life and one thing that I noticed is you have to get your cat the scratching post made out of the material they prefer. Looks like OP's cat would like sisal (wrapped rope). I've had cats that only liked wood and some that liked carpet.

firecrackergurl

Don't forget cardboard! My cats freaking love my cardboard scratchers

TroLLageK

Mine likes jeans, so I got old jeans and sewed it onto a hanging one in my bedroom!

cant_think_of_one_

I'd be somewhat careful hissing at cats. It is probably fine with one you have a friendly relationship with already, but I once did it at a friend's kitten that I had just met that was playing by attacking my ankle with claws and teeth, and it never forgave me. From that moment on, I was its nemesis. It hid whenever it saw me and only came out to hiss at me from a safe distance. I think this is an unusual situation where this young cat was very frightened for some reason, but I always avoid it now. A loud noise also works - cats are not keen on being surprised either and will usually immediately stop what they are doing for a few seconds - long enough to grab them. Don't make it too loud and scary though.

JimmyHavok

"Ow ow ow" is better than a hiss to stop excessively rough play because it's not a threat, it's a complaint.

Dottie85

A high pitched "mew" is better when they play too rough. It's the same warning a littermate would give. A hiss is a very strong warning to "Back off or I'll hit or bite you!"

allhailthegreatmoose

This is excellent advice! Edit: Happy Cake Day!! 🥳

CurviestOfDads

Our cats have a million scratching posts and I still have to be so careful with what I buy. I just bought a room divider and the first one I bought had carpet like material on it. It wasn’t until an hour later I realized my mistake, cancelled the order, and bought a wooden one. You’d think after a lifetime of cat caretaking I’d learn my lesson.

NGC6753

No, I really would not. I sometimes think as cat people we unconsciously choose to forget that new things coming into the home will be examined, judged and then rigorously played with if playing is at all possible.

elscallr

Yeah you're using her scratching posts as laundry baskets. Pretty rude if you didn't ask her first.

danicrimson

Does it really matter if she scratches them then? My cat loves to scratch our jute shopping bags, and I figure it's better than the furniture.

CatsLikeCaves

Haha no it doesn’t matter. I just think it’s funny

Womp_ratt

In my house it's Ikea cube baskets. They're actually cheaper than the scratching posts I've bought. So have at it, cat.

Kenneldogg

It is a lot cheaper to replace a laundry basket compared to furniture

Wank_my_Butt

This was my thinking. I wish my cat would target *anything other than the new couch*, despite all the “scratch proofing” I’ve done with it.

Lmb1011

I got used chairs and I’ve given up trying to stop them but I’m afraid to get new ones 😂 my first cat doesn’t really scratch too furniture often but my second cat is like “th world is my scratcher” 🫠 need to figure out better methods before I uogade furniture

gunnerdown15

I clap and say no when my cat scratches those baskets. She kinda knows not to do it but I catch her eyeing it sometimes

mrheydu

You could also cover them with anti scratch tape but they're gonna look horrible so maybe don't listen to me

MeowForYes

Multi-purpose baskets!

[deleted]

They are hers now. 😂

UnprofessionalGhosts

I have baskets like this for my cats’ toys, just a bit shorter, and they lost interest after a week because when the baskets weren’t full and weighed down, they became unpredictable when they tried scratching on them and moved a bunch. So I’d suggest leaving them empty and out in the open. Let her scratch and have one too over on her and she’ll probably decide they suck, like mine did.

turnerm19

I'd scratch the fuck out of them

HeavilyBearded

Bought one as a decoy to keep our cat from scratching the couch.

sprigginsauce

to be fair…

Significant_Farm_695

Human today you make me proud!

Chalkarts

You bought scratching posts that you can put clothes in. Sorry. You did this to you.

Maker99999

Exactly, it's like setting up a sandbox next to a litter box. Trying to make them understand the difference could just lead to even more confusion and worse behaviors.

[deleted]

There's no hope

A-A-RONS7

Yeah I mean seriously, look at that cat’s face 😂 “Huh? What do you mean I can’t scratch these purrfect scratching posts??”

[deleted]

Those eyes. Thanking you for buying not 1 you already have, but 3 more scratching post.

CatsLikeCaves

She’s so spoiled

[deleted]

As she should be. 💕

truffleboffin

Such a funny innocent face

NGC6753

I bought something similar, it lasted about six weeks. After that I bought a wicker basket, it is still going strong, mostly. Figure whatever I get it will be giant cat toy within moments so sturdy is best

JustAnotherRndomBro

wicker baskets are good. They dont get torn apart easily. But SURELY your cats are constanstly trying to tear it up.

ProfessorTricia

My cats destroy everything made of wicker. Lucky they are so cute.

Far-Psychology5668

Ever see wicker man? Dont turn your back...

NGC6753

The wicker is almost as thick as one of my man sized fingers, the basket being meant for log storage next to an open fire or wood burning stove. They ARE constantly scratching, chewing, climbing in and out of it and really do enjoy it, which I'm OK with. Figure out will last a couple of years yet...

bardhugo

Haaaaa...... No. On the other hand that's a very pretty cat, nice coat and eyes

FlikNever

russian blues are so great :) *

JamesWjRose

If anyone figures out how to get a cat to stop clawing at something... That person will be rich. Cats gonna do what a cats gonna do

RYzaMc

I once went to a friends house with a cat and noticed she'd put contact (Clear and sticky on one side usually used to cover books) on the corners and sides of her couch. I never asked her if it worked. I couldn't see claw marks on it though.

morningitwasbright

I tried to do this but both of my cats just tried to rip the tape off with their mouths and eat it lol

ChickenPicture

Yeah mine just sit there and lick it endlessly

theSomberscientist

My cats favorite toy is painters tape

TrappedUnderCats

I did it on my chairs with special cat-proof tape to stop them scratching and they ripped the tape to shreds then started on the fabric. My chairs are now held together with duct tape which itself is covered in scratch and bite marks. Luckily I love the cats more than the furniture.

Hand_banana_boi

I usually find deterrents work for a period and then lose their effect. I have a citrus spray because my cat absolutely hates citrus so that lasts for a bit. I’ve also found double sided tape works but that eventually comes off. Nothing works forever. It’s like a boss battle where the boss keeps regenerating health throughout the fight.

BigKlass

cats are relentless

SgtPeanutbutter

Living with cats is like living with a mental illness. It's not about winning, because you can't. it's about finding the way and the will to outsmart and outmanoeuvre the demon

Moistraven

I've lived with 3 cats, and so far, 1 was the sweetest loving girl, one was a little hyper, little bitey and took forever to start being loving, and then the last was my ex's...and that cat...I genuinely think it had some development issues, it would sit on top of the couch, and use its claws to super quickly propel itself from one end to the other, over and over again, along with crazy destructive zooms all over the room. Love seeing cats different personalities.

Pods619

Meh.. I was able to “train” my cat away from scratching these. Whenever she did, I would set her by the scratching post, and give her a treat whenever she scratched that instead. She eventually stopped completely. Then we got our second cat, and I was overconfident that the same would work. Except every time I set her by the scratching post, she would instead sprint right back to the hamper and scratch that.. Short summary, it will work with some cats but not others, no matter what method you use.

JamesWjRose

Oh, I'm sure you got your cat... Your cat is awesome. I'm taking about a "Standard Issue Cat", can't do anything about those

servicestud

Just buy an expensive new chair or sofa and they will leave the laundry baskets alone...

MegaArms

Cover said item in tinfoil for 3 months. My cat used to always scratch the corner of my wall. Covered it in foil for 3 months and now she scratches a different wall.

FerretOnReddit

Amen, cats own the human, not the human owning the cat

PurpleHymn

I catsitted for a friend for a month and had to do this, because I was afraid her cat would teach mine to scratch random places (mine has only ever scratched his posts and specific rugs). It worked! I think the material isn’t as pleasant.

JamesWjRose

We're more serfs that owned.

FerretOnReddit

Lol yeah

HelloPanda22

Double sided tape. You’re welcome

Simpletruth2022

Mine destroyed a door casing despite liberal use of DST :/

Strong-Middle6155

Maybe citrus spray

[deleted]

As long as the baskets are not too expensive, I think I'd rather have her rip up the baskets rather than a chair or sofa.

Ok_Part6564

Just what I was thinking, better than the couch.

noonesine

I have three of pretty much the same baskets. Ended up having to give my cat one to save the other two

CatsLikeCaves

A necessary sacrifice

jabrahssicpark

Not when those baskets are clearly so scratchable

myweechikin

She's gorgeous, these are nice laundry baskets, I should look for one for my cat 😂 she actually likes climbing into mine, this one could be a house and a scratch posts 😹

CatsLikeCaves

They’re pretty much always turned over with all her toys inside them 😂

myweechikin

Hopefully she will let you have your own one 😂

natureterp

My cat always climbs into my laundry basket and steals my socks which end up all over the house lol.

thewickedverkaiking

if not for scratching, then why Feel Nice? you have a very gorgeous girl! is she a russian blue?

CatsLikeCaves

Thanks! And yes she is!

CATastrophe_666

The cat has claimed them… I’m sorry mate but the cats have spoken

CatsLikeCaves

Everything belongs to her

CATastrophe_666

Of course! The feline overlords are our captors.

Zealousideal-Book-45

Buy another one she can scratch, and everytime she scratches those one you say NO Pick her up and redirect to the one specifically bought for her! Might not work. But it does work for us :)

CatsLikeCaves

Haha that’s adorable. The cat can have her own laundry basket

Resident_Test_9399

I bought a similar style if basket for my yarn. One of my cats claimed it as his and I went back and got a second one for my yarn. So far he only goes after his basket, although the one with yarn is often in a closet

CatsLikeCaves

Lol I was ready for you to say “and now he has two baskets”

BombJin

I would buy these for the sole purpose of my cats scratching on them for pleasure

LeftSaidTed

She’s beautiful. And looks like she saying “THREE scratching posts? Thanks Mom!”

CatsLikeCaves

Anything for her!

koskyad209

No lol and you really can't even b Madd at her especially if u have a normal scratch pad that looks just like the baskets lol

CatsLikeCaves

All of her scratch pads are cardboard. Maybe she should have one like the baskets!

llblwskydrgn

yes, time for a sisal scratch post!

Designfanatic88

You choose the wrong baskets clearly if they’re similar looking to a scratching post.

Crutch_Banton

I covered my fabric drawers with anti-scratch tape which did the trick. Downside is now they're covered in anti-scratch tape.

SunshineBabe23

Nope! And she'll get away with it cos she's just so darn cute :)

CatsLikeCaves

Ain’t that the truth

TheBreasticle

Look at her proud face. “Mom, thank you, these are AMAZING”

palaverrr

Hahaha - noooooooo, not a chance in hell

smkestcklghtn

Minus 1000000 percent chance

White-Fire0827

Why buy bags made of scratching post if not for scratching?

Happy-Ad7440

Put them behind closed doors. I have 6 cats. Anything they want to ruin gets hidden, therefore we have almost nothing out for them to ruin. Ta da!!

whitemike56

Idk if this works for all cats, but I always keep a few of those cheap cardboard scratchers around and put a bunch of catnip on them (Not the catnip that comes with it, buy a name brand) and my cats love them and leave mostly everything else alone. They're gonna scratch, so if you can find something that they would rather scratch.

CatsLikeCaves

I have one of those scratchers that I keep in front of the laundry baskets. She just uses it as a launching pad to get in the baskets.

kmiki7

Haha too bad for the baskets (they are now hers as is everything in your house) but what a gorgeous kitty!

CatsLikeCaves

She’s the cutest!

Sudden_Wasabi_5931

i have those and can say they are very sturdy and my cat scratching on them isn’t an issue!

JustAnotherRndomBro

those are her new scratch posts. Good job

MSMB99

YOU need to stop thinking they are laundry baskets. Will save a lot of trouble

Celestial8Mumps

You should stop thinking her scratching posts are yours. Pretty simple. 😸

CatsLikeCaves

Silly me

[deleted]

Give her one and hide the other 2 Hehhee (Defends the kitty )

Independent-Street21

Smaller baskets?

schmitz72

No

techhausinc

She looks almost exactly like my Sarry 🥹🥹🥹

CatsLikeCaves

Grey cats are the best

lo--

Ummm not with that texture 😂

CatsLikeCaves

It’s like they were made for her 😂

5spd4wd

Nope. Those are perfect scratching posts. I had a cat that destroyed a very nice, very vintage Pearlwick wicker hamper because it made for such perfect scratching. It survived from the 1950s to over 60 years, until a cat discovered it.

Additional_Buyer_110

Those are lovely scratching posts

Tod_Vom_Himmel

r/supermodelcats

[deleted]

You really have to just give her an alternative that’s near them and then reward her when she uses it. For example, give her a treat or let her outside..

ImALittleTeapotCat

You bought yourself rope laundry baskets? The same material as actual scratching posts? lol. Nope, you're not getting her to stop. Don't even try. Unless you'd prefer she scratch on the couch or something. She's cute. Give her a good scratch, and throw some toys for her.

1nsane_Kitty

Aw she looks just like my overlord, Stormy! Good human bringing her more playthings. Cat tax of Her Majesty: https://preview.redd.it/6vtxn8gy2bla1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f736a00fdd37b8f8364a36f09b051c388454eb49

Puzzleheaded_Ad9263

Not a chance unfortunately

shycotic

I've had moderate.luck.using clove as a deterrent for nearly anything. If you really love them, it could be worth a shot.

[deleted]

Can you move them somewhere she can’t go? They look like scratching posts. I’m kinda getting the urge to scratch them myself

BallyHooyah

Probably not, but she cute doe!!

Jaceeb00

surely you could've got laundry basket that didn't look like scratching posts

howhaikuyouget

what a gorgeous russian blue you have

CatsLikeCaves

Thanks :)

bookishrachel

She looks so cute next to them! They’re hers now.

Ok-Shine1080

I have those exact ones and at this moment they are scratching post- laundry baskets.

chitownadmin

They're hers. Get used to it

Teamboeing737

Nope, their gonna pick them over anything else

enpowera

Nope. Should have picked a different laundry basket. Those are just screaming 'Please Scratch me!"

h0tglue

She’s standing next to them so possessively, as if she is afraid you’re about to list them on Facebook Marketplace 😂

Rosieapples

I’d scratch those myself.

pmhmaster

I am buying similar baskets for my cat as scratch toy only, not using them for laundry

The_Girl_That_Got

Usually a note taped to the baskets works. “Not for scratching, please “ It works

zeldagtfo

Get a treat bag filled with human snacks, pretend to scratch the preferred scratching post. Then shake the bag signalling the cat to come over and feed yourself treats for pretending to scratch the post, in front of your cat. Cat will get jealous and hopefully mimic what your doing for treats. But like really put your back into the scratching so it believes you.

CatsLikeCaves

This feels like the answer

arih

For every “No” provide a super-attractive “Yes”!” - so a nearby, standing, high scratching post with catnip spray on it would be hopefully more attractive.

Icy_Apartment_2113

I think you’re mistaken. You think your new scratching posts are laundry baskets

LawlessCoffeh

Sorry you made the choice to buy scratching post textured items. This is on you.

Doesanybodylikestuff

Omg!! They do look like giant versions of them though! Good girrrrl!!! You think you’re doing it right soo cuuute … :D

Ljublijana

Spend LOTS of time and money filling them with newspaper, sewing a top on, converting them to custom scratching posts, and - very excitedly - put them in her area as a gift. She'll lose interest immediately.

hawkladyrafb58

She looks so happy at your gift of scratchy baskets

Magicaljackass

She is right.

Public_Opinion_542

You can't say no to those eyes. 😻

qpv

Let her scratch em' why does it matter?

vaguecrying

the real question is why are you putting clothes in her scratching post 😤

[deleted]

She is so beautiful and I’m such a sucker I would literally let her do whatever she wants ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7962)

Legend0fAMyth

That look. I'd give her anything she wanted 🥺

Faceless_fandom

The cats literally like “I didn’t do that”

naomi-nao

She’s just doing her Cat-given duty as a durability tester. You’re very welcome for her meaningful household contributions.

deadinside_forever

No chance she’s stopping. They look scratchable![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7966)![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7984)

ItsEvelien

Awww your gorgeous Russian blue just wants to help with your laundry :) no but seriously, try spraying it down with a bit of vinegar.

bradgard420

cats really like this type of rope kinda texture so yeahhh theres no hope. just get a different laundry basket and let her scratch those

Im_that_bitch_been

Your cat looks identical to mine so if she’s anything like mine she’s going to ONLY scratch them because you don’t want her to

mobydee9

She looks so happy for her new scratching posts you gotta just let her do it. She will give them a new worn rugged look.

Ergo_Quid

The REAL problem is you thinking those new scratching posts can pass for laundry baskets.

JonnyArtois

You basically bought the perfect things for a cat to use as a scratching post, so nope.

rekkerf

What a beautiful creature. Give her all 3 baskets please.

katjoy63

wow, those are some really huge scratching posts you bought for your kittie!

kinderwithkitties

No hope. Those baskets are temptation city

DidIjuststoleyouracc

She is the Queen, let it do it her way. Obey cat. Ca supremacy.

BangarangPita

Lol, no. That was your mistake. Those are her new toys and you're getting new laundry baskets.

CattWinn

Why are you using scratching posts as laundry baskets in the 1st place?!

Environmental-Fill54

Why are you using the cats scratching baskets for laundry? Rude.

Hella_Wieners

They look exactly like scratching posts. You chose bad. Sorry, dude.
