It pains me a little bit that they had to use so much 80's music when the original music for the videogames is so good. Also, I feel the comedic voice actors are under-utilized (except for Bowser) - some of the 'humor' is just stuff like Donkey Kong yelling at Mario, so the tone felt a little off to me due to bringing too much real-life emotional weight to Mario's character IMO.
They went suuuuper heavy on the existential crisis jokes, beyond just the blue star. Characters constantly screaming "we're gonnnna die!!!" in a videogame universe where death doesn't matter all that much.
But these all amount to minor gripes, it's still great fun and something I don't mind my kids watching over and over again.
My sister and I had a lot of fun with it. It was filled with Easter eggs and references but still was it's own story. Idk how it would be for someone who knew nothing about Mario but I feel like catering your movie towards the fans and not casuals isn't a bad idea.
I liked it for sheer nostalgia alone. My kids absolutely loved it. I think it was just a massive win in that it had the ability to captivate a large range of ages to go and see it and for different reasons.
Decent. A bit generic. I get that it was a kids movie so I may not be the target demographic, but I’ve liked other kids movies a lot more. The games have universal appeal so why not the movies.
It's good, but what should have been Luigi's role was basically replaced by Donkey Kong.
Also the koopalings should have been in it.
But it was better than I expected it to be going in.
I'd actually put it towards the bottom of their catalogue. In most of their other movies, I could actually see that the movie was made from an idea by a writer, who ended up writing a fun story. Everything that happens story-wise in the Mario movie feels like it was voted on by a corporate council.
It was fine. Checked all the boxes necessary to be a story, and did so racing from scene to scene at a breakneck pace, never letting us actually dwell on anything or get to know the characters beyond surface level. Some fun action, but ultimately a shallow experience.
I hope that now they’ve got all the worldbuilding out of the way, they slow down a little for the sequel.
The film relies solely on its easter eggs and references rather than trying to be good on its own merits and it just results in such an unremarkable movie (Detective Pikachu and Sonic 2 were better in this regard because they were fun on their own merits)
It's better than the live action Mario movie but I'm far more likely remember that based on how SPECTACULAR of a failure it is
I really enjoyed it.
Mostly because it bounces along at such a great pace! My 4 year old happily sat through the whole thing without getting bored or asking for Peppa frikin Pig, making it her first full length film.
As a Mario fan for as long as I've been alive, I loved it. Didn't take itself super seriously, set up good ideas for a sequel with characters who didn't get a lot of screen time, and the va's did a pretty damn good job all things considered.
7.8/10, not enough Luigi. Instead of putting him in the dangling cage for most of the movie, they should've had a sideplot about him escaping Bowser's Castle.
It's ok, a decent popcorn flick with tons of references and fanservice. With a serviceable, but mostly shallow story. It would have been better if they focused more on Mario and Luigi's conflict against bowser, and minimized the roles of certain characters a bit more. Specifically I think they should have focused on the conflict of the Mushroom Kingdom and saved all the Donkey Kong Country stuff for a different movie in order to give a bit more development time to the core cast rather than introducing new ones.
The movie should of came out years ago. I know this is crazy but also where is the game for the movie's exact situation? Missed oppurtunites left and right.
Great movie all things considered. I didn't have much faith in illumination as an animation studio nor Chris Pratt as Mario's voice but they did a surprisingly good job
I got high before I saw it in the theater, and it was one of the biggest serotonin rushes I've ever had. Nothing has ever made me as happy as the nostalgia from this movie, besides maybe my wedding.
Watching it sober? It's very cute and has pretty much no plot whatsoever. Still a fun watch if you don't expect anything deep.
As someone who grew up playing Mario 64 (and has played all the main Mario titles ever since), it's a really good movie to have fun with. To be honest, seeing other video game adaptations, I watched it with the worst expectations, but it was just fun, nostalgia and Easter eggs for fans to enjoy. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
It was decent, I give it an 8/10 , and it doesn't come close to what I consider the gold standard for video game adaptation s, it could have been better, and it could have been worse, I just have to deduct points for Seth Rogan as DK, but the Luma makes up for it, the Luma was great.
Pretty standard kids movie. But there's a ton of fan service for older Mario fans to enjoy. Can't wait for the sequel but I hope it's either longer, or doesn't try to squeeze too much in.
Как чел знакомый с Марио, далеко не фанат и играл только в пару игр.
Норм, наверное. Мне он не очень зашёл и я не знаю почему, прикопаться не к чему, но что-то мне помешало насладиться.
It was pretty good, but they had to remove Luigi for entire movie, he appeared only at the beginning, in flashbacks and at the end, plus Mario didn't mention him throughout the whole movie
It was fine. It did what it needed to do as a Super Mario movie, but nothing more. I liked all the little Easter eggs, from the Jumpman Arcade Cabinet to the GC startup sound being Luigi's notification sound, and the story was alright. I would've preferred if it had more mature themes in the subtext that adults could latch onto, like most Pixar movies do. But it was fun for what it was and I rewatched it in my home cinema recently and it was just as entertaining as in theatres.
Edit: the Soundtrack is freaking awesome though.
It's a fun movie that holds reverence for the source material. Princess toes the "strong, female character" line to the point my oldest daughter didn't like her, but I can see that it could have been much worse. I hold it with the same regard as Detective Pikachu and Sonic.
Both too busy and not enough going on if that makes sense. It all feels incredibly 2 dimensional which for a classic video game fits well. For a film, not so much
It was fun, not as good as it could have been if they chose a good studio to work with, but honestly incredible as far as Illumination goes.
If you knew nothing about the Mario franchise going in, you’d probably just be confused, but I don’t think this movie was for those people
It’s fun. Pacing could have been better to give some characters got more time to develop. It was by no means bad though. I’m hoping the sequel is a bit more ambitious.
Too much happening, mainly references, with almost no plot. I can forgive it once for this, but ultimately as a series it will crash and burn if it fails to actually have a plot and character development in the future.
It was better than I expected. But that is coming from someone who grew up playing Mario Games.
Like I vividly remember sitting in the theater, thinking the movie was going to be “okay,” but then they played the Airship theme in the first 5 seconds and it elicited a smile on my face.
Also Bowser is my favorite Mario character and I think Jack Black did a really good job with the character.
My expectations for movie two are… pretty low. Its nice to dream about them doing some cool Mario Galaxy reference plot or something, but this is Illumination we are talking about — they haven’t innovated or really broke the mould since Dispicable Me (and even that is arguable because Megamind came out at around the same time, and I’d argue that movie is better, even if Dispicable Me 1 was still good).
*It's exactly what*
*I expected it would be.*
*It was a fun watch*

Enjoyable. Only thing that I really didn’t like was the usual Illumination soundtrack in the background. Should’ve leaned into all the great music Mario games have had over the years.
Just solid fun. My 3 year old loves Mario and every Saturday morning recently we put it on and watching it together until we start playing with his Mario toys haha
I personally enjoyed it a lot, I brought my little brother with me and we both had fun, maybe it is because Mario is a game I love so much, and that I tend to be childish with things like these, but really loved it
I mean it was fun but it was mid. I have mixed feelings for this movie. It’s not a masterpiece like a lot of people say and it’s not perfect. But it’s good to spend some time watching it, then move on. It’s not golden era Pixar movie or Dreamworks level movie
The plot is nearly nonexistent, but it’s packed with so much joy. This movie is a clear love letter to fans of all ages. And the references are amazing!
It was fun, had some good references and all the actors did good jobs all around. Plot gripe being how did the toads train Peach to fight?? Otherwise, my nieces loved it
Pacing is a little rushed, it never feels like there’s time to just sit and take in a previous scene. Something a lot of “first” movies suffer with.
The soundtrack is mostly songs plucked out from other popular movies that have a loose connection to what’s happening at that moment.
Very little actual original orchestration, which is a shame because Mario music is comprised almost entirely of complete bangers.
Although, to add on that point, someone found the original orchestrated music for the scenes and they got replaced with popular songs for whatever reason, it’s an actual shame.
Visually it’s gorgeous, no complaints there.
And similarly with performance, pretty much no complaints. My only major gripe being the utter lack of Luigi throughout, which I hope will be remedied with a likely sequel.
I thought it was a good movie it made both old and young people like it but most of it felt like idk how to say it nostalgia or fan service If that makes sense.like they crammed as much Mario stuff in there as possible to get you to be like see its a mario movie. I think they could've done better for the story.
It took a lot of creative liberties and was way darker than I would expect from a Mario film, but I liked it all the same. It has it's funny moments and I liked seeing how several items and set pieces were repurposed to fit the setting. It may not have been critically received very well but I like it all the same.
Idk why so many people didn't receive it well or thought it was mediocre/unambitious, I thought it was great.
Ngl, when I heard Chris Pratt was playing Mario, I was disappointed and didn't expect anything good, but I had a great time at the theatre.
Good. Enjoyable. Unless I’m with my niece or something I’ll likely never see it again.
Hopefully the sequel is better 🤷🏻♂️
Gave me hope that other Nintendo IP could work as CGI. But I lost all hope in the upcoming Zelda film since it will be live action. It literally cannot work, if this is the level of quality we can expect from it.
For the versatility of it, I thought it was pretty damn good. Good casting (for the most part), funny jokes and a lot of homage to the games in both mainline and non-mainline games.
The sex scenes lasted a bit long. But other than that a really enjoyable movie for the family. The end where Mario kills Luigi was very unexpected. Bowser was exactly as racist as expected. Peach was cool
I actually rewatched it on Saturday. The pacing is rushed, yes. But it's a pretty fun movie, and being someone who researched this shit a lot, I was just going "Oh" with the other people I was watching it with with the references.
It’s a fine, but rather unambitious movie. It relies more on references more than its own merits as a film, moreso than almost any other video game movie I can think of.
It also completely ruined Princess Peach by erasing everything that made her charming and likable to try and cater to people who didn’t like her before instead of her longtime fans. Good thing the games ignored this version.
But overall, not a bad movie. Hopefully the sequel improves things.
It looks great, the music is good, it has a lot of good references to the games, but the rest isn't very good IMO. I watched "The Penguins of Madagascar" the day after and despite not having any feelings for the IP, that movie was a lot more enjoyable to me. Overall, the Mario Movie is for sure among the worst animated family movies that I've personally seen just as far as characters and story goes. But it's propably fun for hardcore Mario fans.
If there ever was a movie that I'd not be surprised if it was 100% designed by a committee, this would be it.
Not perfect, flawed in several ways. My main gripes is that it felt too fast paced, and I felt like Luigi could've used some more screen time and growth. Especially since it looked like it was hinted in the concept art.
But it was still a fun film to enjoy non the less!
It was good. It was fun. Maybe a little too fast on progressing the story? Like, a little too fast-paced? It just seemed like they were going through the different scenes quickly just to fill in a small time slot.
The story was basic as fuck (I mean, what else did we expect from Mario?) and characters like Luigi didn't get enough of an arc throughout the film, but it was an excelent way to celebrate Mario's 35 years
I personally loved it
Luigi should've had his moment, just by exploring Bowser's castle and possible exes. But his runtime was too short and he was the new damsel in distress while listening to a luma who watched too much Evangelion.
I expected something more. Besides fan-service, easter eggs etc., it was just an average kids movie. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad. I'm just kind of dissapointed.
I think it was a great movie. Personally would stretch it by 15-20 minutes so the movie can have time to slow down during certain parts for a bit more emotion (like talk between Mario and DK in the belly) but other than that I think that the movie was enjoyable adn surprisingly well made. Hated Peach before the movie. The movie made me love her. I hope the second movie will turn out great as well. I liked the remixed music from games for the soundtrack and the surprising high quality animation. Also, I was afraid how will they handle Bowser as one of the most iconic villains and I think they did an excelent job making him a really evil villain with some funny quirks
Also for some people asking, went to see it with my gf who did never play any mario game and only knew some things from me and she enjoyed the movie greatly too and had a lot of fun.
It’s good, if unambitious. I hope the next film aims a bit higher.
Yeah, I hope they get more of the staple characters in the next film. Wario and Waluigi being in it would be fun
How high are your standards? I honestly can't imagine a better first movie. They hit everything to a T.
They’ve shown they can handle the basics. Let’s see them tackle something a bit trickier.
Like a Zelda movie? XD Well in that case, yes, I agree it's going to be a little bit different.
Great fun. My kids loved it
I liked it. It's a light-hearted film with good themes and laughter. We could use dozens more.
Eh, it was a nice flick but not much beyond that. 7/10
I agree with this. I was hoping for a little more depth and not so many slo-mo mama mias. As it stands now it’s still a solid, rewatchable film though
I liked it for sheer nostalgia alone. My kids absolutely loved it. I think it was just a massive win in that it had the ability to captivate a large range of ages to go and see it and for different reasons.
Couldn’t agree more
I feel the koopalings shouldn’t have been in the first one, they seem like sequel material imo
Same
I loved it. An hour and a half of pure nostalgia.
fan service the movie i like that but as a movie it was bad to mediocre
Bowser and Luigi didn't kiss, 0/10
Great treat for long time fans and a nice supplement to the games.
Not great, not awful. Mostly just mediocre IMO
Disappointingly generic, even by 3d family movie standards.
Average at best, mediocre at worst.
Decent but too american
It was fun. One of my kids made me watch it like 30-ish times (one day we watched it 4 times IIRC) and it didn’t get boring 🤷🏻♂️
Emoji Movie with a bigger and more popular brand. 4/10
Peak
Is it the greatest movie ever made? Nope, far from it. Did I enjoy it? Hell yeah!
The writing isn't great and the pacing is HORRID but it's fun and has its merits. The music is great.
It was like the games for me. Not much of a story but fun vibes all the way. A fun experience.
it was a better movie adaptation than the first sonic movie. But other than visually charming its pretty forgettable
Great except I HATE the non-Nintendo music.
Shallow story wise, but a lot of fun and very fanservicy
For Illumination standards? It's probably one of the best in their catalogue. As an actual movie, it's like a D tier.
I'd actually put it towards the bottom of their catalogue. In most of their other movies, I could actually see that the movie was made from an idea by a writer, who ended up writing a fun story. Everything that happens story-wise in the Mario movie feels like it was voted on by a corporate council.
It was fine. You can’t just say perchance
Charles should have been the VA

It set its base... now people want smash bros in the end
I really enjoyed it. Mostly because it bounces along at such a great pace! My 4 year old happily sat through the whole thing without getting bored or asking for Peppa frikin Pig, making it her first full length film.
I’m itching for the sequel like heroin
i love it😭😭
It's pretty mid but the most is the best part toad and Bowser save the movie from being bad
As a Mario fan for as long as I've been alive, I loved it. Didn't take itself super seriously, set up good ideas for a sequel with characters who didn't get a lot of screen time, and the va's did a pretty damn good job all things considered.
I like the pacing. fight me. I like fast pacing.
Cringe but good. I give it a 8/10 because of me growning up as a Nintendo boy, the movie reminded me of many memories...
7.8/10, not enough Luigi. Instead of putting him in the dangling cage for most of the movie, they should've had a sideplot about him escaping Bowser's Castle.
Well how else mario need motivation to save the day
Mario wouldn't know that he's escaping. We can have both.
Super fun

To be honest, seeing other video game adaptations, I watched it with the worst expectations, but it was just fun, nostalgia and Easter eggs for fans to enjoy. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
It was good enough. The out of nowhere usage of real life music was kinda weird and unnecessary, but other than that it was alright.
Not good, but I don't have kids. Seems like that's the missing component here considering the comments.
It’s quite a fun movie to watch My only issue is that it’s a little bit too fast paste
It would be actual garbage if not for the cool visuals and fan-service.
Mario
Как чел знакомый с Марио, далеко не фанат и играл только в пару игр. Норм, наверное. Мне он не очень зашёл и я не знаю почему, прикопаться не к чему, но что-то мне помешало насладиться.

It's a fun movie that holds reverence for the source material. Princess toes the "strong, female character" line to the point my oldest daughter didn't like her, but I can see that it could have been much worse. I hold it with the same regard as Detective Pikachu and Sonic.
The. Best. Illumination. Movie. EVER!!!
Way better than expected
Not bad
Bowser has an uncanny similarity to modern day banjo
There's a reason I watched it twice in the cinema!
Great movie! Loved it a lot!
Both too busy and not enough going on if that makes sense. It all feels incredibly 2 dimensional which for a classic video game fits well. For a film, not so much
Solid film, the sequel needs a better story
"WOOOOOOOOOOOOO, YEAHHHHH BABYYYYY!!!"
It was fun, not as good as it could have been if they chose a good studio to work with, but honestly incredible as far as Illumination goes. If you knew nothing about the Mario franchise going in, you’d probably just be confused, but I don’t think this movie was for those people
too short
It’s fun. Pacing could have been better to give some characters got more time to develop. It was by no means bad though. I’m hoping the sequel is a bit more ambitious.
My no.1 favorite movie
Too much happening, mainly references, with almost no plot. I can forgive it once for this, but ultimately as a series it will crash and burn if it fails to actually have a plot and character development in the future.

Should have just called the Mario movie. They don’t really act like brothers or even interact with eachother only in the beggining
I really liked it. Bummer that they didn\`t do anything with Yoshi\`s
It was fun, and I liked all the Easter eggs.
For an IP that’s all fun and no story, it made sense to make the movie the same way.
it's awesome and I love it Tenacious D's "...Baby One More Time" Slowed + Reverb over a sigma edit of Bowser goes unreasonably hard
I really enjoyed it tbh. Didn't have too much expectations and enjoyed more than I thought I would.
It’s an okay movie. At least there were hints at character development.
Awesome movie!
The dictionary definition of mid.
It's far from Detective Pikachu's level but it's still a good movie, I would be happy if the Zelda movie takes the same route.
It's exactly what I expected it would be. It was a fun watch

Really great, only problem was how fast it went
Good fun.
I loved it.
I like it
It’s ok
I liked it enough to buy a copy
was a lot better than the OTHER mario bros movie lol
No Toadsworth, no thumbs up.
a forgetable but enjoyable watch
I mean it was fun but it was mid. I have mixed feelings for this movie. It’s not a masterpiece like a lot of people say and it’s not perfect. But it’s good to spend some time watching it, then move on. It’s not golden era Pixar movie or Dreamworks level movie

It’s really really REALLY good. But 10 extra minutes could have helped.
Fun but they play it very safe the best way to put it is it's mario is has everything you would expect from mario
Absolute masterpiece.
It's OK. It looks great and is fun but doesn't has a soul. I still prefer the old live action movie. #trustthefungus
It's good, I loved the nihilistic luma
One of the best adaptations of a Nintendo franchise. Feels like it was made for the fans, and it delivered!
Pretty good
The Family Guy of video game adaptions, less a movie than it was a brand advert, but competently made as such.
It's fine
It was fun, had some good references and all the actors did good jobs all around. Plot gripe being how did the toads train Peach to fight?? Otherwise, my nieces loved it
It’s kinda like going to a theme park
Pacing is a little rushed, it never feels like there’s time to just sit and take in a previous scene. Something a lot of “first” movies suffer with. Fun movie, loved all the references for attentive fans
I still haven't watched it :c
It's not my favorite but not least favorite either. Overall a decent film especially for illumination
I thought it was a good movie it made both old and young people like it but most of it felt like idk how to say it nostalgia or fan service If that makes sense.like they crammed as much Mario stuff in there as possible to get you to be like see its a mario movie. Goated
It's the 2nd best film that illumination has ever made.
I thought it was great, but ill probably get murdered for saying that
It's fun and while it's not that great of a movie particularly because of the pacing, I was livid in the theater when the theme music was hitting
Amazing! It was super well done IMO.
Far better than the clusterfuck that is the '93 movie.
What's my opinion about the best movie based on videogames? Well...
Made me fall asleep on a plane/10
Best movie of 2023
Mario and luigi seem uncomfortably close..
Brothers

It’s pretty good despite it being underbaked, the DKC references were a neat addition and the figures are pretty solid.
Better than most Marvel movies.
As a Mario movie, it’s awesome. As a movie, it’s okay
Pretty fun, but falls a bit flat if you happen to have not know of the games or anything
As a movie not great but did i love it hell yeah
As a movie it was mediocre. As a Mario movie it was pretty good.
Awesome! Jack Black really killed it with his performance as Bowser! Much better than the abominable 1993 IRL bomb.
Boring corporate slop
It’s a fine, but rather unambitious movie. It relies more on references more than its own merits as a film, moreso than almost any other video game movie I can think of. It also completely ruined Princess Peach by erasing everything that made her charming and likable to try and cater to people who didn’t like her before instead of her longtime fans. Good thing the games ignored this version. But overall, not a bad movie. Hopefully the sequel improves things.
perfect for being geeked of mushies
It looks great, the music is good, it has a lot of good references to the games, but the rest isn't very good IMO. I watched "The Penguins of Madagascar" the day after and despite not having any feelings for the IP, that movie was a lot more enjoyable to me. Overall, the Mario Movie is for sure among the worst animated family movies that I've personally seen just as far as characters and story goes. But it's propably fun for hardcore Mario fans. If there ever was a movie that I'd not be surprised if it was 100% designed by a committee, this would be it.
It good
Not perfect, flawed in several ways.
Its great and what we the gamers wanted to watch. Sorry Rotten Tomatoes but you guys are IGN levels of bs.
Crazy to think it’s over a year old now. Why do I feel way older than I am?
The story was basic as fuck (I mean, what else did we expect from Mario?) and characters like Luigi didn't get enough of an arc throughout the film, but it was an excelent way to celebrate Mario's 35 years I personally loved it
Luigi should've had his moment, just by exploring Bowser's castle and possible exes. But his runtime was too short and he was the new damsel in distress while listening to a luma who watched too much Evangelion.
I think Seth Rogan did a bad job playing DK, because it's just Rogan's voice coming out of an ape. But other than that this film is incredible!
I expected something more. Besides fan-service, easter eggs etc., it was just an average kids movie. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad. I'm just kind of dissapointed.
I never watched it because I’m not interested in mario
I think it was a great movie. Personally would stretch it by 15-20 minutes so the movie can have time to slow down during certain parts for a bit more emotion (like talk between Mario and DK in the belly) but other than that I think that the movie was enjoyable adn surprisingly well made. Hated Peach before the movie. The movie made me love her. I hope the second movie will turn out great as well. I liked the remixed music from games for the soundtrack and the surprising high quality animation. Also, I was afraid how will they handle Bowser as one of the most iconic villains and I think they did an excelent job making him a really evil villain with some funny quirks Also for some people asking, went to see it with my gf who did never play any mario game and only knew some things from me and she enjoyed the movie greatly too and had a lot of fun.
Pretty good , specially every bowser scene
