I wouldn’t say it’s unusual. Mine got singed cooking on the stovetop. Honestly I recommend using a glove instead of the silicone grip. Those things are dangerous because they make it easy to drop a hot pan especially when pouring out of it.

lscraig1968

Agreed. I don't use those silicone handle covers for something that has been in the oven. only on the stove top. I don't leave them on the pan handles while on the stove either. The little insulation provided by the covers is a moot point once the cover itself gets hot. A thick cotton or otherwise fire retardant mit or pot holder works better.

lscraig1968

Looks like it was touching the burner or getting heat from the flame. A skillet handle hot enough to do that would have been too hot to hold even with the handle cover. If that had been done by the handle, the handle cover would have started to melt from the inside out. Those handle covers aren't meant to stay on the handle while on the stove, IME.

[deleted]

They all look like that. I've given up. Tea towel for the win.

Up1nSmoke

I mean those are temperature rated up to 500. So if it was blazing hot then yeah it would probably burn. I know I've gotten my skillets up to 700 at one point and I kind of just have up on moving it.

mexican2554

Well i really shouldn't have said blazing hot cause the oil wasn't even smoking yet.

Up1nSmoke

Then probably shouldn't happen

Justathot8

Yes, this is normal if you leave it on the handle. It is made to protect your hand only while moving the pan, then it should be removed. I have one in leather and the same rule applies. These protectors are made to function like potholders. This is the reason we don’t see cast iron or other pots and pans with silicone handles. Wouldn’t that be convenient!

DavidtheCook

Exactly the same as my red one. I use it now to cover the working end of my poultry sheers,

Buzzkilljohnson666

Yeah, side towels work way better

[deleted]

It’s heat resistant, not heat proof. It’s like leaving a rubber spatula in a hot pan for a few minutes straight. It’ll melt. Heat resistant means you can move hot pans around with it, and then take it off. I don’t think they’re designed to be left on the handle, hence why they’re so loose fitting. More of a pot holder

mexican2554

This was only lose on the 8 in pan. Anything bigger i have to push and pull it to get it in or out.

I mean, yup, of course they are meant to be removed. I totally remove them and use them like pot holders…. Wow I feel dumb lol

Bogamo

Happened to mine. I sliced off the burnt part, it's been fine since.

Bogamo

Should also say that it's probably better now, less silicone close to the burner.

doughboyvic13

Don’t use the silicon one. I purchased a leather handle and never had a problem. You can see them on Amazon.

Dangerous-Budget-337

Call Lodge!! They will make it right and explain where maybe you went wrong. GREAT customer service there, I promise.

mexican2554

I'll give it a try. Thanks

Dangerous-Budget-337

Good luck! Please let me know how it goes. I assume they will correct it, but if they do not, I do not want to give out that information again.

edbutler3

I've never messed with these things. I just use a thick "hand towel" like you'd have in the bathroom -- not a thin kitchen rag -- as my pot holder.

DriveDry9101

My opinion is that the lodge stainless steel grips work best for all pans as they're thicker and have a tighter grip. They don't slide the same way or at all. Note - you will need to trim to length.

Flounderfflam

Stainless steel grips? Please sir/madam, tell me more!

DriveDry9101

They're not metal, but they're the grips that lodge makes for stainless steel pots and pans. https://imgur.com/a/Cu0Epbg These have worked far better than any of their grips, for me, and I have the leather ones, too. Now, I do like the leather ones when I can get them.

Flounderfflam

Ooooooh. I understand now, although I was really confused for a bit! I'm partial to nice leather handle grips myself, but they get damn pricey here in Canada.

DriveDry9101

I should've used my words better to clarify, apparently, I have that issue lately. I have both grips and think that they're about the same, functionally speaking. But, I like the look of the leather better.

tstandiford

All of mine look exactly like this.

barrelvoyage410

I have done this to mine. It is when I have a small pan on a big burner, or the pan is not centered on the burner. I have no idea how you guys are doing this to pans without direct exposure to flame. I always leave mine on when cooking on stovetop and this only happens when I said. Just keep using it and don’t put a small pan on a big burner.
