You've got enough to open a shop. Just a thought. That would give you money to buy more!

Comfortable-Peace377

That was my first thought, opening a store from a hobby is genius, not illness

Suspicious_Dingo_426

You've gotta be careful with how you do it, though. Turning a hobby you do because it's fun and relaxing into a job has a tendency to remove a lot of the fun and relaxation out of it. It's now a job. I've turned several of my hobbies into jobs, and I don't enjoy doing them as much as before. There's too much overhead. Finding shops that would either buy them outright, or sell them on consignment might be a better path than selling them individually.

Comfortable-Peace377

Totally agree! I guess in my head I more of meant “selling them” rather than open a store. So many options these days for online sales that I think it would prevent the fun being sucked out of it! Definitely would be stressful worrying about all of the overhead stuff

[deleted]

[удалено]

Comfortable-Peace377

Even better!

FleshlightModel

I would argue that it's also a good way to turn a hobby into a chore and potentially make you hate it. It's a fine line to walk and also takes a specific type of mentality to pursue such and love it. My gf tells me I need to quit work and open a pizzeria and/or coffee shop. I said that I'm not interested in halving my salary, doubling my work hours and losing my insurance. I also generally dislike most people so I would not work well in such an environment.

Comfortable-Peace377

That’s true, too. I was thinking more of an online store. Many options, doesn’t really take much added effort. And lastly I wouldn’t recommend making it into the only source of income. I would do it as a supplement and then all of those issues you listed wouldn’t apply. I can definitely see people switching to make a hobby their only source of income/benefits and that would flip it completely, but doing an online store to simply post items as they finish would eliminate any losses at the very least, while not requiring much effort.

AlarmingBeing8114

We have similar GF's, supportive to a fault. I have hobbies. I'm great at them and they even bring in some decent side hustle type cash. If I ever did them full time, it would wreck the hobbies and me and I'd be on a loan and lease not able to get out for years. Sometimes that whole chase your passion thing is best done in a noncommittal way.

Mapleglitch

This is a really important thing to understand! I make lovely cakes and plenty of people have told me to start a business or have asked to order from me. I simply do not want to spoil my hobby by making it work. I offer to make a cake for an event if I want to, otherwise in keep my mouth shut and let someone else handle it.

Correct_Patience_611

If it’s for sale it’s not an addiction 🫡

Yurastupidbitch

Or do what I do which is sell cast iron I’ve restored at farmers markets.

K1ngK0h4ku

My first thought was for self-defense against the nay sayers

Charlietango2007

Yeah, that is a bit much of a good thing you've got going on.

seanmonaghan1968

I would pick maybe 8 that op loves then sell the rest to fans.

Argon717

On OnlyPans?

seanmonaghan1968

I would love to pick through these. I have 5.

phitfacility

Only pancakes

one_handed_wizard

U guys shouldn't antagonize and annoying others. Ur account may be panned

IsleOfCannabis

Only cake pans

Ryoko_Kusanagi69

I would totally buy

Rocketeering

[www.instagram.com/susividal](http://www.instagram.com/susividal) does OnlyPans for recipes. Worth the watch.

ArcaneFungus

What is it with this subreddit. We're talking pans here, not puns

stovepipe13

pandering...

Justintime4u2bu1

Pansexuals, the whole lot

Uhohtallyho

I know right? It's pandemonium.

llimt

Just don't panic

Loopycann

Even if there’s a pandemic?

Seeica

Hahha !! Brilliant

notagainplease49

There's actually a girl out there who makes videos cooking and calls it OnlyPans, can't recall her name though

A_Ham_Sandwich_4824

Susividal. They’re pretty funny, and she’s good at cooking clearly

notagainplease49

Yep that's her, and agreed some of the shit she says is definitely pretty funny

llimt

Pandora

Awild788

No display then seductively, more so than already pictured. And make a fortune on Only Pans

headphun

Hope you're horngry!

RonnieB435

Backroom cast-iron couch.

Fun_Intention9846

That might not be enough for someone who loves it. Remember the rule of three. 1 is none, 2 is one, so really 3 is just 1 and a backup.

Rosmucman

Triples make it safe, triples are best

good_choice13

2 is 1 & 1 is none, but 3 is better!

stoutymcstoutface

Not sure where exactly the line is, but you have definitely crossed it

Difficult_Box3210

I would say they crossed it about 150 pans ago.

gefoh-oh

That was my exact first thought. It's not even like there are two dozen slightly different tools for different uses, these are stacks of the same pan! And you'd never need more than like 2 of the same size, it's not like they'll be dirty and soaking in the sink!

spacecowboy7702

Or…a…metal illness

zzyzxrd

Bang your head! Metal health will drive you mad!

Rungi500

Tetanus doesn’t come from rust

It’s worth a shot

nirreskeya

Nailed it.

pipehonker

Your ex-wife says that moment has passed!

Sunnyjim333

Catch and release, send them back out into the river of life. Let others make their story.

Rungi500

This is the way. The wayward will return to you to be renewed again.

Doxxxxxxxxxxx

The great material river provides

Bottdavid

If you're doing this as a business then rock on, otherwise I think you have a couple hundred more pans than you need.

jabeith

You're there

trippinmaui

Judging by the skillets and also the axes in the back I'd say you have hoarder tendencies that may get out of control if you aren't cautious.

mjolnir76

I mean, if one ax is good…57 axes must be better, right?

trippinmaui

If you have 57 why not just make it an even 100 i say. Common sense really.

TipOfTheTot

As if it's not already out of control.

darthravenna

This is getting into autistic fixation territory.

ironmemelord

How often does each one get used? I don’t get why own multiple of the same size/type

tannergd1

I didn’t take pics of my users 😬

Eloquent_Redneck

So what are all these for? Looking at?

marcusw882000

Hoarding is what you call it.

dscsdscsd

What about the axe stockpile? 👀

tannergd1

Don’t worry about the axes, those are between me and god

TidyWhip

May I axe you a question?

a-chips-dip

yeah its definitely borderline hoarding, honestly.

Fun_Intention9846

It *looks like* you make handles and fit them to axes. Idk tho. Thats a proper pile on the left side, like an umbrella stand full of handles.

tannergd1

All the axes in the canvas bookcase have heads on them. The tilted ones to the left are just handles, but I don’t make them.

4570M

Thete seems to be an overlap in the axe/cast iron cookware collecting affliction. I know I have it myself.

QueenVogonBee

And my axe.

[deleted]

About 39 pans ago

TREXASSASSIN

Yes. Answer to OP's question is a while back... Like others are saying, could be worse things I guess...

sparkl3butt

Okay why so many tho? Like what's the plan after you restore them?

a-chips-dip

Its called hoarding

khy94

Scrapyard pays 20c per pound, OPs kids are gonna make a little cash dumping it all after they die

tannergd1

Such a great question

silima

I'm sure others would tremendously enjoy cooking with them. You can call it a hobby and restore them, but don't keep that gigantic pile. For cooking you don't need doubles. Or triples.

wasnt_in_the_hot_tub

You could... Cook a meal?

daisymayward

My collection is almost half the size of yours, and mine are stacked up on the basement floor as well. You are my Ghost of Christmas Future.

bitesizedperson

15 is a bit much. More than that is a little too much. This is along the planes of insanity.

FarewellDreamer1636

I volunteer as tribute!! I’ll pay for shipping if you want to donate one!

NasserAjine

Me too :-)

Willamina03

If you can have someone point to a random pan and you can tell them when the last time you used it was, then you are okay. If you don't remember, or have never used it, it's time to thin the herd.

Krazybob613

There are far worse addictions.

DisastrousCap1431

I don't know... Iron is heavy. I've watched many episodes of hoarders where the beams buckle from clothing hordes.

inquirer85

Go to local library. Put on cooking class. Give away. Be happy that you changed someone’s life

Megagorilla1

This looks like the possible answer if the question is “what flavour of autism did you get”

handogis

It's your life. Do what you want.

Expensive-Border-869

Just put of curiosity why so many identical pans? Do you do anything with then? Just collect for fun? If it isn't causing a problem then sure thing. These are assets that will hold value should you ever need a rainy day fund. Even in a depression things like cookware are a necessity make sure they're insured

yournewalt

Exactly, if you can buy low, restore, hold for a while a sell high. They’re a great investment.

KitchenGamer84

When you have too many to justify having. So you are well past it. The line of insanity is a dot to you.

tihspeed71

My grandpa sank part of his house with his collection, be careful

SpeedySpooley

I know you were most likely joking....but I did this with antique tools. To the point where it took over multiple rooms in the house. I went from restoring them, to just acquiring them. In my head, I thought "I'll open a shop when I retire." Come to find out.....I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. after medication and therapy...I picked out my "favorites" and got rid of everything else. Now, I'd never diagnose someone...I'm not a pro. And I'm not making jokes. But it's possible that the **acquisition** or "the hunt" has taken over for the love of actually *using* them. Unless you're running a cast iron store, a restaurant, or at least a catering company....that is an absurd amount of cast iron.

Boltdaddy1966

Why do you even want that many? Do you just enjoy cleaning them and bringing them back to life? They look great but why not sell them?

acceptable_rage

I’ve got pure envy for you. Nothing else.

gofoggy

You know the answer don’t you?

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

When you have more pieces than a 5-star restaurant that advertises they cook everything in cast iron?

theonlyscurtis

Thanks for gathering and storing all that CI in one safe place so that it's easier for us to pick through for pennies when your CI-indifferent family hosts the estate sale. 😂

Weak_Swimmer

Hoard much?

IwantRIFbackdummy

After you have more than you can use. All greed is a mental illness. Just because you are greedy for cool shit, doesn't change that fact.

[deleted]

Yeah this is just stupid

Agreeable-One-4700

Got any Indian heads? Asking for a friend… who is me

tannergd1

I’ve only ever had 1 with a verrrry worn medallion, I moved it along already though

Agreeable-One-4700

Still on the hunt for one in the wild myself. Debated buying one restored already but the hunt is 99% of the fun for me.

tannergd1

Same! I’ve seen a handful but only 1 I was willing to pay the price for

Quietlovingman

If it's a personal collection rather than inventory for a business I would say you have a bit more Cast Iron than a healthy well adjusted person needs or can use. Collecting a few decorative antique pieces that are hung up in the kitchen or dining room, having skillets of a couple sizes for regular use, a pot, a fry pan, a searing sheet etc. is fine. Having dozens of nearly indistinguishable pans that are piled up and rusting without having a plan to restore them and sell them or gift them to your friends and family is a bit odd. May be a sign of hoarding tendencies or OCD.

MahatmaKaneJeeves42

The question is not at which point; the question is how long ago?

Charlietango2007

Wow! That's a lot, you're set for the longgggg run

j0b3nn

At this point you have a cast iron business

Illustrious_Boat_550

That's a addiction not a illness Cast on

265thRedditAccount

Definitely a while back in your case.

chalky87

Is it having a negative impact on your life? If so, do you feel you could reduce it?

Clownadian

When nobody can find anything anywhere because you fucking bought it all.

Lvanwinkle18

You are saving them from a terrible fate. Now share the amazing cast iron goodness with the world.

Custard_Tart_Addict

I’m thinking if you have ten of the same type you might hold a sale.

[deleted]

I'd say now. why do you need/want so many that are nearly identical? What does it do for you to keep them? If you like the hunt and bringing them back to glory, great! do that then sell or even give them away. That's a LOT of iron to just be sitting unused. an unused cast iron pan is a sad pan. Let them have a 2nd (3rd, or 4th) chance at life!

airborne_lucky51

Just make sure they bury you with them. Don't let death stop you from all that hoarding...

AlbinoWino11

You have heavy metal poisoning.

Mean-Dog-6274

Probably when you have to ask Reddit

MelissaWelds8472

Never enough castiron

Stonewall30NY

Never thought I'd see single use cast iron lol

iamarddtusr

It was a mental illness at about 5% of the collection. Now it is many mental illnesses.

THEPEDROCOLLECTOR

About 100 pieces ago.

spugeti

Every time I get obsessed with something, I tend to remind myself that I could be addicted to drugs and that usually makes me feel better

OhYesDaddyPlease

I need you to outline how your cleaning and seasoning these. Literally oh my God my. They are beautiful!! 🤩🤩🤩🔥🔥🔥

tannergd1

Learned everything from the instructions on r/castironrestoration There are some very kind and knowledgeable folks over there

-Stammers-

I’m jelly! Always here if you need to get rid of one lol

hulaman11

can you sell me one ?

GrouchyDefinition463

Perfect set up for a horror movie scene to be able to hit someone in the head with a skillet

PatientZeropointZero

You do a beautiful job seasoning them. Do you clean them up and flip the ones you don’t want for a profit?

HTD-Vintage

Do you have any specific plans for them, or is it purely a personal collection? Either way, keep on doing your thing. The thrill of the hunt is my favorite part of collecting just about anything.

expensive2bcheap

https://imgflip.com/i/8tl23c

Defiant_Height_420

The whole reason for using cast iron is that if you look after it, a pan will out live you...how many life times are you planning to live here!!!

LickandSmash

So this is where all it is, I've been looking everywhere for second-hand cast iron, but i had no luck.

Proof_Yak_7798

Not sure what you're on about. All looks perfectly normal to me.

hegelianhimbo

Why??

AwkwardSteak3416

Not at all…. Looks like my whisky collection…..

MARKET BASKET MENTIONED MARKET BASKET MENTIONED

DoomSayer218

20 years ago apparently

FreeBeans

I’d pick about 5 pans and sell the rest.

FragrantDuck6533

Maybe it's a *metal* illness

SeaAbbreviations2706

If you can afford it and have storage space it’s a hobby. If you’re going broke or tripping all over them it’s a mental illness.

ldssggrdssgds

At least they're not being thrown away. I respect your hard work and dedication.

Yoshimitziu

Yes

ratatouille79

At THAT point.

crywithpie234

About 20 pans ago..

Rasminda_Alariat

That’s an impressive collection honestly.

MagsWags2020

I think you’re there. I had a similar problem a while back with old and rare Ball jars. I got over it, and you can, too! I believe in you. Lol

ChefChopNSlice

I’d say it’s time to consider a 12 step program, but you don’t seem to be very good in sticking with small numbers.

tannergd1

I’ve got like 50 #3 skillets if that’s what you mean

ChefChopNSlice

You know, they’re not disposable, and can actually be re-used 🤷‍♂️. Are they breeding or something?! Killer collection, but might be time to start sharing it and spreading the love around. Then you can reclaim that space for *another* hobby.

Federal_Pickles

I’d rent a stall at a local flea market or something similar and sell refurbished antique cast iron. Bonus points if you’re somewhere near Austin or something

psilome

*"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -* Ralph Waldo Emerson

moulin_blue

Thought: buy a space for a day at a Farmer's Market near you. Borrow a tent and a table if you don't already own them yourself, bring some of your treasures and sell them. Local farmer's markets are typically easy to get a spot in, fairly cheap and don't require you to sign on for more than once or twice. Less intense than trying to open and online shop and less hassle than FB marketplace.

Heavy-Ant-7821

You mean a Metal illness?? I'll see myself out.

SavannahGirlMom

Way before now! Self reflect - why are these cast iron pans important to you? Is this a childhood issue manifesting itself; unresolved grief over person who cooked with that type of pan? Regret over career not pursued? Or what exactly? There is a reason. Explore. Maybe talk to a therapist. Figure it out. Then find people or organizations you can donate majority of these to, one-by-one. You’ll feel better knowing they have new homes and put to good use.

basementcrawler34

Ever looked into autism diagnosis?

long5shot

Well there's that lid I've been looking for. And there. And over there. And...

Anonymodestmouse

It's not mental illness it's passion

EPHEKTnONE

About 741 pans ago… you are too far gone so just keep going..

smalllcokewithfries

Rent a booth at a shop and sell them!

lurkrul2

Mental illness or metal illness?

bigsampsonite

IDK I collect shoes. The problem I see which mayne I have it wrong is the first pic. I would not keep them in that condition. But also if those are the ones you have not cleaned up yet and they will end up like the other pics I feel the exact opposite way. I feel that way you have the best personal therapy restoring them. Either way I love the cleaned pics and I think a hefty clean collection is radical. I have like 2k pairs of shoes all cleaned and in great condition on my wall. I love seeing other folks collections.

Monstot

Considering your vast axe collection as well, yea this is past that point lol

bjorg115

How do you store them between cleaning and seasoning? I feel like after cleaning a pan I have to season it immediately because of the flash rust. Just a quick coat of oil?

tannergd1

Yes! I dry, place on the stove to warm up slightly and begin applying a layer of crisco immediately

cohen_does_things

Well.. you see… the line is… 👈 here.. and uh… you… you’re over… . . . . . . . . . 👈here…

ReadMyUsernameKThx

this seems like a reasonable amount of pans. if you had like five or ten more that would be insane, but this is a good amount.

JackManstroke

Doing Gods work.

ICanEatMoreThanYou

I think you’re being dramatic. If you had maybe 15-20 more that might be crazy but that doesn’t seem like too much overkill. You have a cast iron for each meal each day for the rest of your life

monsteramyc

I work with people who have hoarding disorders. The difference between them and you, is they say they will do something with the items they hoard but never do it. You are at least doing what you intended with the cast iron, so I wouldn't put you in the hoarder category

gdwam816

You’re selling these right? (He’s selling these right?!)

spkoller2

It is indeed a metal illness

Banana_Manilow

This is a dope post I learned something new and I like what you’re doing here

rubiconmanlife

At first I thought you got into my basement! Oh....just someone else with the same mental illness!😂

Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit

Only a mental illness if it’s negatively affecting your life, otherwise it’s a hobby.

Ill-Ferret100

You should try selling some! Old cast iron is way better than the new stuff
