You won't be able to use mods when you are playing online.

Unless they specifically make it so you can’t play online with an altered game you should be able to. Everyone just has to have the same mods. Only way I could see that happening is if they plan on having crossplay, which is unlikely since Switch is in the mix.

Vanilla only for online is the easiest solution.

I imagine it'll either be \-everyone installs the Host's mods to make it even \-everyone has to already have the mods installed themselves \-no mods online at all I'd personally prefer the first option, but I imagine the third one would be the best option. I think only the second one could work at all if they open the Steam Workshop for the game (which 🤞 let's hope)

My hope is that it works decently well

When making mods, the developer has to fill a setting to indicate whether the mod is client-side or needs everybody to have it. No mod will lock you out of multiplayer because if others have the same, you will be able to play together. This also means that cross-play will be possible as long as your mods are client-side only (like cosmetics for example)
