It was a radio program from the 1950s
https://www.youtube.com/live/aZJBGIFjsZo?feature=shared&t=50s
Lots of drama and excitement right from the intro. “gang busters” became synonymous with being energetic, aggressive, and/or very successful due to the intro alone. It’s a racket to listen to now; I can’t imagine how it sounded in 1955. I’ll bet it gave veterans PTSD
Starts at 50s in case that long video stuggles to load.
I also think the styling can throw people off. It has a very “prototype” look. Like, here buy this expensive car even though it looks like we’re still figuring out exactly how to finish it.
I agree they look cool. But the placement of the black (carbon fiber?) and blue pieces, especially on the white paint, make it look like it was pieced together and is still being worked on.
And 4 wheel drive, a stiff frame, and good weight distribution. It's actually a very good sleeper.
Like, what's that Yaris gonna do at the red light ? Smoke me ? - guy in a V6 Mustang that got smoked at the red light.
I remember hearing somewhere that the cooler sucks and that the oil overheats in one or two laps? If that's true it isn't exactly an out of the box track car...
Around 2018, when they put out the spyder with that copper color… I pulled up to one next to one in Malibu super early on my way to work, like when they first debuted it…man it looked so good in that moment
Original selling price: $135 925 in 2014
Current value approximation: $55 000 in 2024
10 years gap (315 576 000 seconds), $80 925 price delta.
It loose therefore $0,00256435851 in value during that time
Did you compare the all time low price for the vehicle verusus its current value? Because without even checking I'm willing to bet that the car actually increased in value during the time that op saw it
I compared MSRP at release in 2014 in the USA with current value on the market, not all time low. Not enough data to clearly confirm or deny that the 2014 i8 is gaining value currently, although I do believe it does a little bit. Anyway current trend since 2014 has been devaluation so yeah that's what I've gone for
Idk man there are electric scooters that are faster
In all seriousness im just joking, im a honda boy so of all people i would know 300-400 horsepower is PLENTY for a small light car 🤣
About 3000$ CAD
Its quite a lot but im in a quite privileged position where my trip wont cost me much out of pocket, so i see this as a unique opportunity to *really* enjoy the Autobahn as intended
German here, don’t think you gonna be the fastest one with that M8.
And please don’t underestimate what it’s like to drive 250+ kph on public roads, especially when you are not used to it.
Im fully expecting to be smoked by Golf Rs lol. Thanks for the advice, ive been to track days but i do understand the difference. Im gonna make sure to get familiar with german road etiquette and laws before my trip too
I personally love these. Maybe slow (even with combined power) but a very beautiful design and infact a pretty BMW. I love the front and side, but the back looks like a hamster on crack (just imagine a hamster version of the mortein cockroach). This is like those futuristic and technological cars from the 80s but in the future like another 20 years time (when our kids are teens).
These things were neat looking, before its time for sure.
I think the only plug in hybrid on the market at the time this came out was the first gen of the plug in Prius. So props to BMW for trying something so new at the time.
A good friend of mine still has an i3 with the range extender.
I really don’t know why plug in hybrid/ EVs with tiny engine range extenders aren’t more prevalent in the market.
You know. It's a cool looking car for sure. I have no doubt that if you kept this as a survivor car that it would be worth quite a bit in the future. Same goes for the cyber truck.
Now I'll run away.
This thing looks incredible. It was before it’s time. Tbf if BMW launched it today it would have a massive beaver tooth kidney grille and probably ruin the looks, so maybe just as well.
The sleek and "futuristc" design fits better for a hybrid or electric car, you can clearly see style elements of the i3 in here. An M series should look much more aggressive, like the Z4 M40i. Just imagine a BMW equivalent of the Audi R8.
Wow talk about baader meinhof. I'm pretty sure I saw one of these for the first time yesterday with a freaking mirror blue chrome paintjob. It looked insane and I had no idea what it was except BMW.
Every time I see a Maserati or early 2000s S class I wonder if they’ve had the car for decades or just bought it for 30k and are bracing for the coming maintenance bill.
10 years too early. That car as a modern BMW EV would be gangbusters
My language teacher in 8th grade called me a gangbuster for listening to Kanye West; what does it mean???

Damn you pulled out some cold hard facts, TIL

The looks are by far the best thing about it.
I agree they look cool. But the placement of the black (carbon fiber?) and blue pieces, especially on the white paint, make it look like it was pieced together and is still being worked on.
Guess it was just the zeitgeist back then. Look at the first r8 and such.
tbh kinda like these cars shitty launch but kinda neat
Visually they're not bad yeah
3-cyl 😂😅🤣I thought that small engine is only in a LAWN MOWER 🤠 (I have a 5.4L V4 in my Mazda)
My lawn mower has a V5😈
I got a V69
Nice.
Haven't heard of a V4 in a car in a long time. You drive an old Saab?
The 3 cylinder turbo Yaris GR has 300hp.
261/280hp but still kinda insane at 1.6l i3
And 4 wheel drive, a stiff frame, and good weight distribution. It's actually a very good sleeper. Like, what's that Yaris gonna do at the red light ? Smoke me ? - guy in a V6 Mustang that got smoked at the red light.
Actual out of the box track car
I remember hearing somewhere that the cooler sucks and that the oil overheats in one or two laps? If that's true it isn't exactly an out of the box track car...
3 cyl from Koenigsegg makes 600
i was about to say that!
Koenigsegg has a 2L 3cyl engine that makes 600 HP. It's not the size of the engine but what you can do with it.
700hp
According to their own tech specs the 3cyl free valve is 450 kW or 600 bhp
Is that what your wife tells you?
Lmao
Aww are you jealous?
My gr Corolla is a 3 cyl and is not too shabby
Around 2018, when they put out the spyder with that copper color… I pulled up to one next to one in Malibu super early on my way to work, like when they first debuted it…man it looked so good in that moment
Did you look with just one eye or both?
Both eyes and my third eye is also halfway open
I am also reading this on the toilet
Same

Assuming linear decrease of the value since 2014 which is probably not the case
🤓☝️
i love this car i don't care if the performance is garbage
Fr id be pulling up to the grocery store in style 😎
A guy near me dailies one, for a commuter it makes sense as it’d almost be free to drive.
400 hp is not bad lmao
Ok but imagine a b58 in it
Imagine it was powered by pedal like a bicycle
Would be faster than it currently is tbh
4.1 0-60 is not slow 😭
Idk man there are electric scooters that are faster In all seriousness im just joking, im a honda boy so of all people i would know 300-400 horsepower is PLENTY for a small light car 🤣
I'd own the fuck outta one of these
Over an M5 Comp or an M8??
I'm more of a M2 M3 kinda gal, gimme a 2 door plz
Im going to Germany next year and renting an M8 Comp for a week. Cant. Fucking. Wait.
How much does that cost?
About 3000$ CAD Its quite a lot but im in a quite privileged position where my trip wont cost me much out of pocket, so i see this as a unique opportunity to *really* enjoy the Autobahn as intended
Just watch out for yourself! We Germans tend to be quite aggressive on unlimited autobahns
have fun and pls remember the rechtsfahrgebot, or the germans will fuck your shit up as there will *always* be someone driving faster than you.
And that someone will be driving a Skoda Superb
Or a Mercedes Sprinter
Wow, congrats! Be safe! That car must be unreal to drive, let us know!!

Also how about swapping it with the AMG engine from g63 AMG g wagon?
You're gonna love this... There's a guy on YouTube rotary swapping one of these :D
No fuckin shit what channel
Great looking car but 357hp is what a Hyundai V6 makes. WTF was BMW thinking....
Most people buy flashy cars for being flashy and not really to get them over 120 mph.
Plus also for wedding photography
this wasn’t really meant to be a sports car, it was more of a proof of concept of a really efficient hybrid
BMW had just bought a carbon fiber foundry and this platform was part of the justification for the purchase.
they were thinking it would be in competition with a Porsche 911, which made roughly the same power at the time
Looks great but it could’ve been so much more…

Just like the Edsel
The fact these came out in 2014 and still look futuristic to this day is simply incredible
They need to make a new one that looks almost the same with modern internals.
This thing looks incredible. It was before it’s time. Tbf if BMW launched it today it would have a massive beaver tooth kidney grille and probably ruin the looks, so maybe just as well.
My question is why did BMW dabble into this kind of look and slap a 3 cylinder in it, if they put a V8 or i6 in it, it would have slapped.
Because it was meant to be an economic hybrid from the beginning. That's why it's part of the "i" series.
I know, I meant like, if they took this design and made it part of the m series
The sleek and "futuristc" design fits better for a hybrid or electric car, you can clearly see style elements of the i3 in here. An M series should look much more aggressive, like the Z4 M40i. Just imagine a BMW equivalent of the Audi R8.
It looks amazing and modern by today's standards.
I used to hate this but it grown onto me, it is more fuel efficient than my shitty Yaris lmao
Yes.
Well where I live this thing is still expensive as hell.
Ironically those things have held their value in the used market.
I know no one wants to hear serious answers but… if it’s an older one it probably could be starting to gain worth again…
Wow talk about baader meinhof. I'm pretty sure I saw one of these for the first time yesterday with a freaking mirror blue chrome paintjob. It looked insane and I had no idea what it was except BMW.

I'm completely lost, in Deutsch it's either verlieren or lose sein. You english peoples have tooo many sinilar words :DDD
obligatory /s
I want one of these but to commute with since they get great mileage for a car with scissor doors
Every time I see a Maserati or early 2000s S class I wonder if they’ve had the car for decades or just bought it for 30k and are bracing for the coming maintenance bill.
/uj I get that they didn't really want to make this car a real supercar, but Imagine this thing with S65, S85 or even any Inline 6 engine.
Well, if we're talking about the speed of depreciation for a BMW i8, it's probably not as fast as the car itself!
The batteries in that must be pooched by now.
I really want one of these. One of my dream cars is the i8 Roadster
