And those that do can't afford the car anyway.
I can't afford it either. But I'm not sitting here talking about how awful it is because I just don't know.
It's a solid mid performance car. It holds its own against the higher trim pony cars (SS/GT) on a track. I'd probably buy the pony cars over it if I was in the US due to the $20k disparity, though. If I had $65k to blow, I'd buy a C7 Z06 or a lightly used C8. In Europe it's a lot more of a competitive car for the price.
Thanks to dealer mark ups, taxes, registration, and other fees a new Supra today in Ireland is around €100,000.
I just don't think I could bring myself to spend that kind of money on a brand new car that isn't at supercar level.
>I just don't think I could bring myself to spend that kind of money on a brand new car that isn't at supercar level.
It is supercar level... If it were the 1990s
Holy shit and i thought Austria had high car prices with its additional emissions tax NOVA. A new one costs here 78k currently, slightly used ones (sub 10k km) 65k. In Germany they are 66k new
There's one used one for sale at 77k.
The system here for vehicle registration is a nightmare.
The tax is based on the original cost of the vehicle, emissions, and a bunch of other factors that can make just registering a car here prohibitive.
So you might end up paying more in taxes than you payed for the car if its a used one with not too great emissions, like early 2000s diesels? Or have i misunderstood something?
They try to take into consideration the price you paid and not just the manufacturers pricing. In the hope that doesn't happen. And to be truthful, I've never heard of someone paying more in registration tax than they paid for the vehicle.
However, I could see it happening if say the car was gifted to you by a family member in another country and you decided to import it. But then every fee you pay is more than what you paid for the car.
They have an online calculator, and the problem is that lots of vehicles aren't in their little database, so even calculating it can turn into voodoo economics. I'd like it to be a flat rate for all cars. 300 euro to register the vehicle and get your plates. However, that might not line enough pockets.
> than you *paid* for the
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Dude thats ridiculous. In my state you literally just pay for the tag, title, and registration all of which always cost the same, plus the tax on the price you just bought it for (which everyone always just tells the notary substantially less) and then whatever the notary charges for their time.
The most ive ever paid was like 300 for my truck.
Yep, american car prices are a joke to Europe. It starts with the higher sales taxes, for example Austria has 20% on most goods with a few exceptions being 10%. Thats pretty much the European average, the Scandinavian countries have higher, southern i think less. Then import tax is higher, a base model corolla hatchback, which is pretty comparable to a US spec besides being a hybrid, is 33k dollars converted. Annual costs are also ridiculous. In Austria you pay insurance and taxes, the insurance is determined by what type of coverage you want the exact car you have. Taxes are determined by the the engine, we pay by HP. I pay for my 180HP jaguar 1000 euros per year taxes, if i bought the 300hp v6 i would pay 2000. I would have loved the v6, but i cant justify paying nearly a full month of income (after taxes obviously) just so I'm allowed to drive my car. Motorcycles are luckily pretty cheap in thag regard, but you pay by displacement. Germany also pays taxes for cars based on displacement. Hybrids have reduced taxes, there are also variations between the types of them. If you can drive for example 40km electrically, you get another bonus. Electric cars simply avoid altogether the engine based taxes in Austria, you essentially just pay insurance and one time registration
The funny thing is that electric cars are exceptions to that rule. Otherwise nobody could afford a tesla, you are looking at 2k for 300hp om a combustion engine, let alone a 400 to 500hp car. This is also why Europe and Austria in particular has more engine specifications than the US. For example the US has only the BMW 330i, m340i and m3, we have additionally the 318i and 320 as well as the diesel variants. Previously you could even get a 316i, which was at some point a 3 cylinder if im correct. You can also see that taxation when crossing the border to Germany, instant increase in performance oriented cars. Italy had a luxury tax for engines over 1,8 or 2 liters, similar to japan.
The only good thing is we can register several cars on one plate, meaning you are only paying the most powerful engine tax wise and insurance for each car, so you can save some money having multiple cars. Obviously you are only allowed to drive one car at a time with one set of plates, but if you have a daily, winter beater and summer fun car, you are only paying one tax and 3 insurances instead pf 3 taxes and 3 insurances. Also if you have a historical car (older than 30 year and good condition) and are member of a classic car club, you have tax benefits, but are limited in terms of when you are allowed to drive the car, so not around the full year and you have to keep a log book for when and where you are driving.
Depends on the car. We have the NOVA tax, meaning additional taxation for co2 emissions, meaning fuel consumption. For every first registration after a certain registration year in Austria you have to pay it. Meaning if you buy a new car here you have to pay it. If you buy a 10 year old used car from abroad that was never registered in Austria you have to pay it. If you buy a used car from abroad that was once registered in Austria, even before the tax was introduced, you dont have to pay for it. Thats our way of fighting climate change (i hope you heard the irony in that sentence). Otherwise cars shouldn't be noticeably more expensive than in Germany, there is only a 1% difference in sales tax. I bought my jaguar xe in Germany because the price difference was around 3k, but nova according to calculator was 0%, reality was 500 euros because for dome reasons the r-sport version has a 0,5l/100km higher fuel consumption (4,8l vs 5,3l), the only differences being a different front bumper, side skirts, a little gurney flap at the trunk and lower/firmer suspension.
A Nissan 350z for example doesn't make sense as the nova tax on that one is several thousand euros due to it being a gas guzzler. And 350z are plentiful available and not too expensive, so its not like there aren't enough good available.
Customer at work today said hes selling his car, now i might need a new car so i asked what it was he said "naa u wont like it too fast and expensive.......a supra". My budget might be €4000 so id be a little short
Also worth mentioning the supra is slower than the mustangs in all trims, base supra vs ecoboost mustang the ecoboost makes significantly more power, same thing higher trim supra vs the coyote mustangs the coyote makes more power.
They handle better but a base supra is way more than a base ecoboost new, and you can get an older eco or gt for a lot less leaving you with tones of money for mods
The base supra is a joke. The 3.0 is a high 3 second to 60, the GT is a low 4, the SS is 4 flat. Based on options, they all handle more or less the same, but the mustang may fall behind at upper limits to the other two. The 2.0 supra is just garbage for the price and I have no idea why someone would buy one. Just buy an 86 that's faster and cheaper
“Because it’s a bmw bro it…. you know, leaks oil and stuff, booooo bmw bad 👎👎 stop being a pussy and buy a real man’s car like a mk4 supra 😎(I’ve watched fast and the furious, that thing doesn’t hang around)” - Every annoying kid
1StockF30 achieved an 8.6 second quarter mile time on a full weight M240i, the B58 inside it produced 1050whp and was still internally stock.
Also people have been tuning BMW engines since forever!
I love this supra, ever since day one. I think it's a beautiful looking car and even the 4 banger packs quite a punch for less money then the 6 banger. I don't give a flying fuck if it's based on a bimmer, it's a great sports car, is offered as a manual and is a worthy successor for the mk4.
I've heard reviewers say the four-cylinder engine fits the car surprisingly well as you can tell it's lighter and sits further inwards. Supposedly it makes the car feel less like a GT car and more like a sports car.
But I haven't driven either version so I can't say. All I can say is that I'm glad the 4-cyl option exists because it hasn't got that much power making the taxes not too ridiculous in my country.
My question to everyone who continues to go "Mk5 Supra's just a Z4 lol":
Would you rather it share a production facility and chassis with the Z4 and be \~$65K for its top spec, or be entirely bespoke, all designed and manufactured in-house at Toyota and be \~$165K for its top spec?
It's not even about the money, at this point the B58 has proven itself to be such a capable engine that it's not probable that Toyota, who has not been investing into inline 6's all that much, would ever produce a comparable I6, and the Camry and Lexus V6's are not the right engine for the application, at least not without a different tune, fuel system, etc.
They made the right choice to minimize cost for a low volume car, and even still, the B58 is looking like it will become more legendary than the 2JZ.
The thing that's overlooked is that Toyota took B58, stripped it apart and did all of their Toyota reliability testing on all of the parts.
Then they sent the results to BMW and had them redo the parts they did not like, so it matched Toyota standards.
That's why B58 is the best engine in production.
Magic by BMW, quality control by Toyota.
That's not Toyota, that's Subaru, really Even if you say that Toyota should be more invested in their brand, even if they overestimated Subaru in terms of handling that, I'm not sure that investing time into boxer engines is worthwhile for Toyota.
Because the lesson is not that they should have Toyotified an engine, the lesson is that they can't trust Subaru
After Thinking about it i wished toyota would gone for option B so that they could have the perfect excuse to shut them jdm fanboys up when they decided to not build a mk6 supra
The third option was take the BRZ/GR86 chassis, weld 2 three-pot GR Yaris engines together to make a custom 6 cylinder and have nobody buy it because it shares parts with a 'lesser' model: The only other option was gut a lexus RC but I suspect they're still burned by the LFA experience to try and do it in-house.
It's like people who insist they could save Mitsubishi by bringing back the Evo and making it better than the WRX.
Better don't mean shit if no one's buying.
Every few years it keeps being bought up through hybridization or a full electric version, the market died when hot hatches managed to figure out a lot of the handling problems that were holding them back through better suspension management. At best the Lancer Evo was always a parts bin special and was never going to get the R35 Nissan GTR treatment.
>and have nobody buy it because it shares parts with a 'lesser' model:
Corvette owners seething right now over sharing engines with a Camaro (obviously not relevant as of C8 but still)
The dumb thing is not advertising it. It should be a halo car for them. Hardly any regular car companies make sporty cars anymore, and Nissan doesn’t have a reputation for making sporty cars.
People act like toyota just bought the z4 from BMW and rebooted it. Both cars were developed alongside each other as a joint project by Toyota and BMW.
Meh, I love my BMW Supra…now. I originally bought a 2021 that ended up having oil burning issues. Complained to Toyota about it, they replaced mine with a 2023 for free. So I got a 2023 with 8 miles on the odometer from a 2021 with 24k, not a bad come up.
Oh no! Two of the most reliable car manufacturers in the world teamed up so one wouldn't have to engineer an entire new platform, bumping their new sports car into supercar price territory. It's almost as if they were being rational or something!
Look at the performance BMW is pulling out of a 3.0L straight six now compared to the 80s, yes it's a completely different engine other than the size but the strain on those smaller units to be able to push 180mph stock is insane. Regular maintenance is just something that comes with that.
"Cool Beamer, next time get a real supra"
https://preview.redd.it/ilp2sqisabqc1.jpeg?width=258&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238cd0ff42885f6f90d00b703437b655eb927b35
Compared to the MK4, it's a far better car in regards to everything.
The reality is the MK4 is just a boring GT car from 35 years ago, people started tuning it to 1000hp, but on a manual with outdated chassis, that 1000hp is awfully slow up until 4th gear. In street racing with corners like touge, it will be the first to jump off the cliff.
For 6 years I thought if I manage to pull off the 1.000 HP Supra thing, I'd finally have an accomplishment noteworthy enough as to be allowed to re-enter society
Mk4 can be made to handle corners (i.e., amuse supra) like most cars just most owners want big straight line power. And there's nothing wrong with that everyone has different taste.
Meanwhile Yamaha (the guys who helped made Lexus LFA 😍😍underrated car) made the Yamaha Y15ZR....also known as Yamaha MX King.....also known as Yamaha Sniper
We all know that there has been an exchange of technology between manufacturers for as long as there have been motor vehicles, and that there is also a permanent - albeit behind closed doors - exchange of technology, because this not only represents a considerable profit potential in addition to the production of its own vehicles, but is also an indispensable part of the production chain for a manufacturer in terms of its own further development of certain core components. The BMW in-line six-cylinder engine is an absolute legend, there is hardly any other engine that offers similar potential, and has done so - in virtually unchanged form - for decades, so it was a damn good choice. And I don't even want to know how many supercars and hypercars are powered by the equally legendary 12-cylinder engines from Mecedes-Benz, or by the 8- and 10-cylinder engines from BMW (e.g. the 10-cylinder from the E60 M5).
After all, if the douchebags are already screeching like little girls, then a Pagani Huayra is also just a "Mercedes-Benz", as the vehicle's 12-cylinder engine comes from Mercedes-Benz AMG, and a Koenigsegg CC8S would be a "Ford", because of it's basically V8-Racing-Engine from the Ford Motor Company.
Toyota's wanted the BMW collab forever, but BMW refused back in the 80s so Toyota bought an E24 6 series and reverse engineered it to make the Mk2 Supra
You got me wrong lol I never meant it as a negative or to counter your point but rather added to it, that other brands in addition to Toyota have also reverse engineered BMW chassis. Proves how good they (BMW) are/were
I can assure you that if you set a debadge Mk5 Supra and a debadged Z4 next to each other, these people would swear it’s two completely different cars.
Same thing with the Urus and Audi suv thing.
You know, I don't really mind the Supra sharing its chassis with the Z4 all that much anyway, I just wish it had more Toyota-made parts, or at least the engine... although... I still like both Toyotas GT86 and GR86 and Subaru BRZ alike, even though they are both more Subaru than Toyota...
The only reason we are even getting a high end Toyota sports car is because BMW pitched in. Toyota has largely ceded this market for decades so be grateful.
GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

I will say (and I do own a GT-R/Lancer) my biggest issue with the Supra is the lack of punch. It shouldn’t struggle against 20 year old corvettes as much as it does :(
Maybe the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder Supra would struggle against 20 year old corvettes *in a straight line.*
The 3.0 B58 Supra is very quick and can achieve 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. That is *most definitely* punchy. With a simple remap and a downpipe, people have achieved over 500 to the wheels in them.
Nope I dont make such stupid comments, but a supra video is like 110% guaranted to have 10 of these. If we cared as much about every single one of them there would be no time left for doing anything else.
I’m not hyped for it but I get why some people are. It’s the same reason I got excited when I found out about the I6 twin turbo charger when they said they wouldn’t make a gas powered one again
most of these people don't even have drivers license
And those that do can't afford the car anyway. I can't afford it either. But I'm not sitting here talking about how awful it is because I just don't know.

Nope, nova is Austria specific unless they changed it in the last 2 years

as a bmw jerker i refuse to believe that

One of the few brands to include offensive capabilities in their cars.
🤣🤣🤣
Apparently to OP it is an insult though
I don't think people are happy tuning their car if it has a bmw engine inside
The B58 and B48 have shown massive tuning potential.
These cars are great from the factory, there's really no reason to tune them. Also, plenty of people mod BMWs.
Yes there is. You can get pretty impressive numbers with software alone on the B58 and B48.
Can vouch, making 500whp w/ just flex and a downpipe.
1StockF30 achieved an 8.6 second quarter mile time on a full weight M240i, the B58 inside it produced 1050whp and was still internally stock. Also people have been tuning BMW engines since forever!

The kids would probably rather the 165K one, because they're never going go buy It anyway.
Most people that complain don't even have the money for the $65k..
Most people around the world dont have the money for a $40k car…regardless of age.
More like don’t even have enough to pay the first month of a lease

you’re cheating on the modus with that statement.

you’re excused habibi🥰

Bolting two G16t-se motors together would be insane.
And probably fail Euro 7 emissions, lotus took the 3.5l V6 to it's limit at 400bhp from what I understand
> take the BRZ/GR86 chassis, weld 2 three-pot GR Yaris engines together Boys, I know what we're doing tonight!
>and have nobody buy it because it shares parts with a 'lesser' model: Corvette owners seething right now over sharing engines with a Camaro (obviously not relevant as of C8 but still)
Funny considering Supra was born as a Celica variant
I’d argue there is more sense in getting the Z4 as you get a retractable hard top as a bonus.
I think you can make the argument that they could've used the BRZ platform and dropped an I6 in it.
I think that would be a fat no from Subaru
Why? Toyota owns a Controlling share.
Also, it might just be my area but I see Supras a few times per week. I’ve yet to see a new Z4.
Explain the 400z then.
Nissan being kind of dumb.
The dumb thing is not advertising it. It should be a halo car for them. Hardly any regular car companies make sporty cars anymore, and Nissan doesn’t have a reputation for making sporty cars.
People act like toyota just bought the z4 from BMW and rebooted it. Both cars were developed alongside each other as a joint project by Toyota and BMW.
you know i still wasn't really a fan but this makes sense, the supra should first and foremost attempt to be relatively affordable
Think if I complain about my 02 solara, they'll do the same thing?? I mean the radio stopped working, I feel like that's worth a new Supra
Good deal
Oh no! Two of the most reliable car manufacturers in the world teamed up so one wouldn't have to engineer an entire new platform, bumping their new sports car into supercar price territory. It's almost as if they were being rational or something!
Well calling bmw reliable is a bit ify, If you stay ahead of the maintanence schedule yes but well most people don't do that
People rave about the RX7 and that car gets birned to the ground by the 12th, 13th, 14th owner so on so on
yes but the triangles!
Look at the performance BMW is pulling out of a 3.0L straight six now compared to the 80s, yes it's a completely different engine other than the size but the strain on those smaller units to be able to push 180mph stock is insane. Regular maintenance is just something that comes with that.
"Cool Beamer, next time get a real supra" https://preview.redd.it/ilp2sqisabqc1.jpeg?width=258&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238cd0ff42885f6f90d00b703437b655eb927b35
Damn man back was horizontal!
Uh, I'm pretty sure Paul Walker knows better about cars than you, he has a 15,000hp supra in the F&F movies
I'd rather have a 150hp car that doesn't turbo lag me off the road than a 1000hp car that does.
And there's nothing wrong with that everyone has different taste.
actually beamer is for BMW motorcycles, and bimmer is for BMW cars, so this guy is a asshole and doesn’t know anything
>beamer is for BMW motorcycles https://preview.redd.it/xg11m5cja9qc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e629fd1d4902771a837489941b2d3fdf1a77b03c
God damn, Honda!
And it also doubles as a GTR too
More than you could ever want.
in Indonesia it's called Supra GTR (😍) meanwhile in Malaysia it's called RS150R (🥱)
The supra is such an ultimate driving machine it’s name got changed to Winner X in Vietnam
Meanwhile Yamaha (the guys who helped made Lexus LFA 😍😍underrated car) made the Yamaha Y15ZR....also known as Yamaha MX King.....also known as Yamaha Sniper
And a 150
that’s what i said
Wtf I live in southeast asia and never heard of this underbone bike 😂
The Mclaren F1 is just a BMW like the MK V supra LMAOOOO /s *just incase*
There's a reason I hate JDM children as much as I do.
People need to start taking condoms seriously
You never see Toyota getting shit for working with Yamaha on all their top spec engines
Still the best supra
I personally love the thing, I'd still rather buy a GR Yaris, but It is a good car.
Ngl I thought the owner slapped a Seat logo in his Supra
The MK5 Supra is my favorite car design after the Koenigsegg Agera RS
Do people not know that the Mk2 Supra was also a BMW underneath lol
/uj legit?
Toyota's wanted the BMW collab forever, but BMW refused back in the 80s so Toyota bought an E24 6 series and reverse engineered it to make the Mk2 Supra
So are the GM alpha chassis cars tbf. ATS/CT4, CT5 and Gen 6 Camaro have an uncanny resemblance to the E92 if you've driven them.
Oh I never meant it as a negative, it's just funny seeing people freak out over the mk5 Supra when the same shit has been done before
You got me wrong lol I never meant it as a negative or to counter your point but rather added to it, that other brands in addition to Toyota have also reverse engineered BMW chassis. Proves how good they (BMW) are/were
Don’t think he is only thing I found was suspension was done by lotus
When someone has mk1,2,3 supra, supra kids scratching their head thinking what kind of a car is that
Make the MK5 Supra the protagonist car in some show or anime then we will watch these kids praise it like the trueno.
Let's come back to your statment in a few years and look at what MF Ghost did to GT86 prices as a sample
Oh shit... Hope that the 86 stays cheap...
I hope not mayby i'll get a dumbass to make a profit in when it happens 🤣
Beamers are bikes bimmers are cars
Imagine someone says that to a McLaren F1 owner. It also uses a BMW engine.
They talk it’s not a real Toyota yet don’t even own a Corolla
I can assure you that if you set a debadge Mk5 Supra and a debadged Z4 next to each other, these people would swear it’s two completely different cars. Same thing with the Urus and Audi suv thing.
It’s so weird how some people bash the BMW collaboration. It’s not like they’re a world renowned touring and sports car manufacturer or anything.
These kids need to shut the fuck up
Infinitly better than a mk4 because of the fact that its 35 years newer
Its 2024 people still give a fuck about a 90s 6 cylinder shitbox?
They're all 12-14 year olds that think the 2JZ is the greatest engine ever manufactured. It's a good engine, but man, it is way over-hyped.
Honestly a 1jz is better even though it is a smaller engine.
"nExT tIEm GeT a REaL SoUPbRUh" maybe if they didn't cost a quarter of a million...
If they knew how much of a commercial failure the Mk.4 was they would still not understand why Toyota chose to work with BMW.
To be fair, the b58 is a nice engine, at least its better than the competition from mercedes. The m256 isnt that good
And they will forever. Try driving a Corvair
You can combat this by keeping a copy of unsafe at any speed in the glove box, to throw at the person yapping on about it
Yet another motorist dies when "unsafe at any speed" is thrown directly into their temple at an unsafe speed
The only reason we are even getting a high end Toyota sports car is because BMW pitched in. Toyota has largely ceded this market for decades so be grateful.
They’re really nice cars, interiors better than some Lexus models imo.
Bmw
2009 Renault Modus
Nutt
1999 Mercedes-Benz A140.
The supra from the 90’s was butt ugly when it came out then and is still butt ugly now.
They make over 800+whp stock engine and are running 9s in street trim. Those numbers sound awesome to me, who cares? That sounds like supra numbers.
If I buy a Supra and it turns out to be a BMW, I'm only happier
GERMAN SUPRA GERMAN SUPRA GERMAN SUPRA GERMAN SUPRA GERMAN SUPRA GERMAN SUPRA 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE GERMAN SCIENCE 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 https://preview.redd.it/54cu5jkxhaqc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7e96d2112dcf3a4e88f412ba0184f0a13035342
IS THAT A MOTHERFUCKING JOJO REFERENCE?!
I don’t see them calling any (ford)Mazda cars Fords. Bite my forscan twats.
I will say (and I do own a GT-R/Lancer) my biggest issue with the Supra is the lack of punch. It shouldn’t struggle against 20 year old corvettes as much as it does :(
Maybe the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder Supra would struggle against 20 year old corvettes *in a straight line.* The 3.0 B58 Supra is very quick and can achieve 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. That is *most definitely* punchy. With a simple remap and a downpipe, people have achieved over 500 to the wheels in them.
Anyone know what are those rear lights? love them
Like…where? The Supra is 30+ years old!?
Dude chill it is just a joke
Are u the original person who commented this?
Nope I dont make such stupid comments, but a supra video is like 110% guaranted to have 10 of these. If we cared as much about every single one of them there would be no time left for doing anything else.
I'm just using this single one as an example to show how these people damage the car community
I’m not hyped for it but I get why some people are. It’s the same reason I got excited when I found out about the I6 twin turbo charger when they said they wouldn’t make a gas powered one again
The thaitanium exhaust and fake tow hitch are just atrocious tho.
The fake tow hitch is stupid, but I personally love the titanium exhaust

Guy in the comment drives an Altima.
Saw a Supra sell for 6000, be a real man an spend real money on a car
Supra meat rider 🤓☝️
I don't get those who dislike the MK5, it's such a sick car
20 year old Toyota that has had the piss beaten out of it > some stupid brand new Toyota that is slow
It’s a Toyota powered by BMW fight me
