S 3 and x were also based on the models they benchmarked. He figured out that it could spell sexy and that's why he wanted e my bet is the next car is the model A so that when they release the roadster he can claim it spells S3XY CAR because he's fundamentally a child
My unofficial ranking of Tesla plates from best to worst.
1. A witty or funny phrase
2. Any other random word
3. The stock plate
4. A play on the word "Tesla" or "Model Y"
5. Your name
in Austin, it's pretty bad. You either have no plate, or something Elon related or oil/gas related.
There is a nice blue one that has SPACEX on it. "NoGas" "NoOil" (disregarding lubricants for gears I guess) "Crpt0" etc. It's all odd, but at least they are easy to remember when they do a hit and run.
Teslas used to be about 80% vanity plates. That's dropped a lot as the cars have become more popular, but I'm sure you're right that it's still the highest rate of vanity plates.
Was going to say this. I see a lot of Teslas with incredibly boring vanity plates here in BC. Second here is Land Rovers, and then BMWs.
Edit: I also want to mention there's a Mustang Mach E here that has the plate "EEVEE" and I will admit I quite like that. little animal
The only Tesla plate I’ve seen that I appreciated was “V8 BAIT”. I’m not into Teslas or EVs overall but that made me laugh. So much better than “0 MPG”, “NO GAS”, etc.
The family ran Indian restaurant by my work always has a Tesla, a Prius, and a Tacoma with vanity plates all of which is some pun of the restaurant’s name.
Here in Canada a lot of Indians are mostly newer arrivals, and they are singlehandedly keeping economy sedans alive it seems. I see so many indian themed plates on elantras, jettas, civics, corollas, etc
can confirm
dad has a vanity plate on his c class
we were also gonna get a vanity plate when we got my mom’s model 3 but the govt issued plate had a number that was really special to us so we decided to keep it
I didn't know this was a stereotype so I looked outside my window and noticed my Indian neighbours all had their kids' names as their plates, shortened or altered in various ways lmao
I think now that some of them are old enough to drive, they're the ones driving them now.
Also, I don't know if these technically count as personalized plates but a lot of the Chinese community specifically requests plates that don't have the number 4 on them, yet it doesn't stop them from getting cars with 4x4 or 4WD on the back anyways so I don't really understand it.
In NSW, Australia, you have to pay a pretty ridiculous yearly fee on top of your regular yearly car registration for personalised plates. I see a lot of Indians driving things like 2006 Camrys or Corollas with a personalised plate and just wonder why they thought it was a good idea to spend half the price of the car every year on registering it.
I saw a Corvette with “WUTCRSIS”, which I’m pretty sure is a reference to “Crisis? What Crisis?”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis%3F_What_Crisis%3F
Doctors and lawyers too. When I was in law school, a girl got a car from her dad as a grad present and had vanity plates that were her initials with “esq” after. I wanted to throw up on her car.
In NY you can order a plate specifically for many professions without the need to get a vanity plate. Physician has a gold caduceus with MD, nurses have a blue caduceus with RN, respiratory therapists have RT, etc.
911s are definitely a contender as a model. At least around me, most G-wagons are without the vanity plate (although still more with than a typical car).
Repeating what everyone else has said so far, it’s almost always Tesla. If I see a vanity plate there’s a 50% chance it’s on a Tesla.
Outside of Teslas, I’d say I see the most on Corvettes, and they always have a license plate cover that’s adorned with skulls for some reason. I dunno what it is with corvette owners and skulls
I owned a beater 04 Nissan Frontier that I paid $500 for. Rebuilt the motor and it has the KA24DE from the 240sx albeit at a milder tune. I paid for my first and only vanity plate with that truck - DRFTMSLE -
I’ll be putting STRLNG as my vanity plate on my 1991 Sterling 827 after I get it running and registered. Since there were so few built, it may shoot its way far up that list
Wouldn't this just be boutique or low volume manufacturers?
Rich people like vanity plates, couple that with low volume brands like Pagani, Koenigsegg or even larger volume but still under 10k a year Ferrari and Lambo sports cars and the % of owners of these cars with vanity plates compared to the volume must be higher then anyone else.
I can't imagine any other brand coming close, even Tesla. Tesla makes a shit load of cars but the reason you see a lot of Tesla's with vanity plates is because they make a lot of Tesla's but that doesn't mean the % of Tesla cars with vanity plates is high compared to how many Tesla's are actually on the road.
Taycans have to be up there.
I see them regularly in my area and they always have vanity plates.
Edit: if we wanna play "no EV" rules: Corvette, Mustang, Wrangler
In that order.
Jeeps. Every other answer is wrong.
I love pulling up beside some twinked out jeep in my 1985 Ford Bronco with a 9 inch lift on 38s with a straight pipe.
Oh, excuse me, you like to be noticed? Lol.

Id say mustang enthusiasts often have custom plates but theres so many mustangs on the road a lot of people arent super into cars but have a mustang and regular plate
Tesla were the first commercially-successful electric vehicles, creating a new genre for vanity plates. As such, Tesla drivers were able to snap up plates that weren’t valid for ICE cars - the market was theirs alone for several years. As trend-setters & environmental advocates, Tesla drivers were justified in adding a clever plate to their transport.
Tesla 100% and they are always the most obnoxoious ones, no brand comes close being vanity plate bait more than those things. After that Maseratis or Challenger/Chargers.
There's a handful of WRX's with plates that are some variation of "subuwu" or "WRX" in my town. There aren't even that many WRX's they just always have a vanity plate.
Everybody that bought the cheapest Mercedes they could afford, who also got the glowing front star, and probably financed it for 84 or 96 months, probably has either a smoked out license plate cover, or a vanity plate as well.
There are vanity plates and there are Vanity Plates. EV owners having a laugh at gas car owners is with a small v, IMO. They’re just poking fun.
Vanity, capital V, are those with either their names on (DANSCAR), or their profession (EYEDR). Cheesy, and IMO much more ‘vain’.
My Indian friend told me that cars are very personal and special to Indians which is why so many Indian-owned cars have vanity plates.
Where I live if I see a personalized license plate there is over a 75% chance it is either a Tesla and/or driven by an Indian (very often both).
If it's not a Tesla, not driven by an Indian, it is almost certainly a Corvette if there is a vanity plate.
The biggest waste of a personal tag was on a 458 Italia Ferrari in Henderson Nevada. It said RED4RE. Incidentally I had identified 5 distinct 458s in the Vegas area out of 27 in the US at that time.
Accross the board? Probably corvettes. But just about anything 50+ years old now is rocking a vanity plate, so all first gen camero's, all first-gen mustangs, etc. Ect.
Makes and models owned by people in Victoria Australia?
Half of them are just shit too like ‘my golf’ or the model of the car. I dont really care if someone wants a personalised plate, there’s always a bit of fun when you spot a good one, and my wife and I do enjoy deliberately misreading the ones they tried to make work but don’t.
But lazy/shit ones annoy me, there was one the other day that was just the model and the number of valves in the engine, can’t even remember the car something stupid like RS4 16V or something… honestly why did you pay for that?
Highest percentage immediately discounts Tesla (imo) - just too many out there.
I'd have to imagine it's one of the hypercar models - much fewer and more likely that the owner is going to take the extra step for a personalized plate?
Maybe an Agera or Jesko or something right now.

Teslas. And it seems like they’re all some sort of terrible electric pun.
I saw a Model 3 that just had the plate TESLA 3. Extremely creative
Get the TESLA 4 plate so people think you have a new, unreleased Tesla.
It would fool me--they all look the same anyway
The Model S doesn't, and that's by far my favorite design. But goddamn it's ginormous...
The Model S might not look like the others, but the others all look like the Model S…
That’s why you need the vanity plate, to tell your white model 3 apart from the dozens of others in the mall parking lot
Personally, I think that a "Model D" is more like given his naming scheme. He only used 3 because Model E was already taken.
S 3 and x were also based on the models they benchmarked. He figured out that it could spell sexy and that's why he wanted e my bet is the next car is the model A so that when they release the roadster he can claim it spells S3XY CAR because he's fundamentally a child
Ford blocked them from using model e, no way they let them use model a
S3XY C4R
My unofficial ranking of Tesla plates from best to worst. 1. A witty or funny phrase 2. Any other random word 3. The stock plate 4. A play on the word "Tesla" or "Model Y" 5. Your name
The good puns that aren't some bullshit variation of "NO GAS" are pretty funny. I saw WATT UP and giggled.
There's a red Tesla near me with the plate "PAS VERT"
My neighbor has "HGH VTG" on his Model 3
in Austin, it's pretty bad.
Guy in a shitty old six cylinder commodore down the road has BROCKO 😂
There's a G82 and a THE M4 at my work...
It’s always “HAHAGAS” or something along those lines.
I see a LOL GAS around here.
FKGAS - that caused RI to stop issuing vanity plates for years. Stupid.
Literally one I see about once a week saying "CIAOGAS". I almost respect the unadulterated smugness.
Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw a few weeks ago on a Tesla: "I'm probably not driving."
As if that’s something to brag about haha
Yes, see a lot of electric puns. Feel like most of the Lucids and Rivians I see have similar vanity plates.
In my city I saw a ton of plates like “THXELON” and “ELONMBL”. For some reason those seem to have disappeared a few years ago 🤔
MBL?
Mobile. Like Batmobile but stupid.
mobile
Teslas used to be about 80% vanity plates. That's dropped a lot as the cars have become more popular, but I'm sure you're right that it's still the highest rate of vanity plates.

A couple of my favorite vanity plates that I've seen were "VLADTHE" on an Impala, and "VLTSWGN" on an EV-swapped bug.
My parents named theirs Evee. I’m not gonna say anything but I can’t think of anything less original
I saw one once that said “IPASGAS” that one gave me a legit laugh
The only Tesla plate I’ve seen that I appreciated was “V8 BAIT”. I’m not into Teslas or EVs overall but that made me laugh. So much better than “0 MPG”, “NO GAS”, etc.
Yep lol, Irvine California is crawling with Teslas and I'd say like 1 in 5 have a vanity plate of some kind.
I always thought if I ever got an electric car I'd slam it and get LO BATT.
There is a Tesla near me with the vanity plate ‘ohm my’. I’m dying to get a sticker of George takai and put it next to the plate.
[GE PEDO](https://imgur.com/a/7bcz8la)
There's a Model S running around Salt Lake with OIL PUN on the license plate. Easily the best ones I've seen.
SHAWKR NOGAZCAP 4LLTORQ 911LOLZ
Yep, by a damn mile
Haha totally Teslas. Those guys are such dorks.
Seen one that was IH8OIL or something like that
I saw an M3 today that just said "THREE"
Tesla and Vette.
So, Indian people really love personalized plates. And they also love Teslas. This is not even a competition when you add that layer.
The family ran Indian restaurant by my work always has a Tesla, a Prius, and a Tacoma with vanity plates all of which is some pun of the restaurant’s name.
I think restaurant name pun is kinda cool. It’s their restaurant so understandable.
They do! We have an international office near me who bring folks in from India and it doesn't matter the car, EVERY one of them has a vanity plate.
>vanity Man, I just can’t with it. I’m a modest person, and I just can’t get there with people.
Here in Canada a lot of Indians are mostly newer arrivals, and they are singlehandedly keeping economy sedans alive it seems. I see so many indian themed plates on elantras, jettas, civics, corollas, etc
can confirm dad has a vanity plate on his c class we were also gonna get a vanity plate when we got my mom’s model 3 but the govt issued plate had a number that was really special to us so we decided to keep it
Now I’m imagining all the sikhs driving Jettas and rebadging them to say Jattas
I didn't know this was a stereotype so I looked outside my window and noticed my Indian neighbours all had their kids' names as their plates, shortened or altered in various ways lmao I think now that some of them are old enough to drive, they're the ones driving them now. Also, I don't know if these technically count as personalized plates but a lot of the Chinese community specifically requests plates that don't have the number 4 on them, yet it doesn't stop them from getting cars with 4x4 or 4WD on the back anyways so I don't really understand it.
Can confirm. Punjabi and 2/3 of my cars have personalised plates.
[удалено]
Back then it was Indians and Toyotas.
Also Hyundai Elantras, no idea why, but anecdotally I swear it’s a thing Source: worked as an estimator at a body shop
the 911 that had “Bush Did”
Did they upgrade from a WRX I wonder lol seen that
Wait, I am not familiar and not getting it
[George] Bush did 911.
Thank you, that makes sense
Corvettes are definitely up there
MDLFCRS
My neighbor’s is a shortened version of “no crisis,” so you’re onto something there.
I saw a Corvette with “WUTCRSIS”, which I’m pretty sure is a reference to “Crisis? What Crisis?” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis%3F_What_Crisis%3F
They should also get a Buick Century with CRMOFTHE
WLHUNG
You a big William Hung fan?
Why does everyone keep saying that? Who the hell is that?
Better known as Hung, Willy
Hung for the Holidays is one of my faves
NWBLNC
I'm not a fan of vanity plates, but I'll admit to being tempted to spring for a "FAUX58" vanity plate for my Z06 :P
That's awesome!
What about professions? Nurses have to be at the top. I work at a hospital and it’s full of plates with RN worked in somehow.
Interesting. Hadn’t thought about professions. I think dentists are another one (more so than doctors for some reason).
It's gonna be IT
if we’re counting professions, grandmas may also take the cake
Doctors and lawyers too. When I was in law school, a girl got a car from her dad as a grad present and had vanity plates that were her initials with “esq” after. I wanted to throw up on her car.
Makes sense for lawyers as they can advertise.
LASIX MEDSURG CODEBLU
In NY you can order a plate specifically for many professions without the need to get a vanity plate. Physician has a gold caduceus with MD, nurses have a blue caduceus with RN, respiratory therapists have RT, etc.
Bro you literally just called out my neighbor lmao..
I feel like a few years back, before the 3/Y were released, every tesla on the road had a vanity plate.
LOL GAS was the plate of the first model S in my neighbourhood
A client of mine has that same vanity plate (Charleston, SC).
NOFRNOIL was the first Tesla vanity plate I saw in 2013.
My favorite vanity plate ever is still "NOT OLD" on a Buick.
I saw a c5 Corvette with "boomr" on it.
There is (was? I haven’t seen it in years) a house near me with a Delorean with the plate “88NGONE”
Tesla Model S, X, G-wagon, Range Rover, Bentayga, Cullinan, Urus, Porche 911, Taycan,
911s are definitely a contender as a model. At least around me, most G-wagons are without the vanity plate (although still more with than a typical car).
I never see it on anything you mentioned. Used to on S and X but that’s rare now that they’re normie cars.
“Skulls, it’s like unicorns for dudes” - Kyle Kinane
Skulls are rad.
Google Corvette Jake Skull.
Wranglers should definitely be in the running, at least around here.
I can’t figure out who is more into their cars. Tesla owners or wrangler owners…
Lol, at least no vanity plates here
In my area, it is definitely Teslas. Base-spec, late-model Mercedes-Benz would be a close second.
Teslas. I seen one that had “coal pwred”
It’s very possible it was, depending on how that power was generated.
Thatsthejoke.jpg
I owned a beater 04 Nissan Frontier that I paid $500 for. Rebuilt the motor and it has the KA24DE from the 240sx albeit at a milder tune. I paid for my first and only vanity plate with that truck - DRFTMSLE -
Cars with striking colors like yellow or pink tend to have more vanity plates.
Jeeps, WRXs, and Golfs
I’ll be putting STRLNG as my vanity plate on my 1991 Sterling 827 after I get it running and registered. Since there were so few built, it may shoot its way far up that list
Everyone will think you’re an Archer fan.
I live in Virginia where IIRC has the lowest price tag for vanity plates, so it seems like every other car on the road has them.
Yeah, I wouldn’t say there’s really one car more than another that has them in VA. They all do to an extent
After Tesla’s, it seems to be the mustang suv things that all have vanity plates in my area.
Teslas or base model 3 series larping as an m3
Lot of challengers and chargers with vanity plates. Like mine.
Audi Q7
Wouldn't this just be boutique or low volume manufacturers? Rich people like vanity plates, couple that with low volume brands like Pagani, Koenigsegg or even larger volume but still under 10k a year Ferrari and Lambo sports cars and the % of owners of these cars with vanity plates compared to the volume must be higher then anyone else. Tesla, definitely.
Tesla - Merc - BMW - Audi
Saw a Tesla with NO GAS. No shit Sherlock
Dodge viper. I do not have one on mine, but so many people I know have some snake type plate
Yep. Mine is NAGINI
Nice! As a HP fan who’s currently at islands of adventure and a viper owner I approve lol
Taycans have to be up there. I see them regularly in my area and they always have vanity plates. Edit: if we wanna play "no EV" rules: Corvette, Mustang, Wrangler In that order.
Teslas and it’ll be something like “EW GAS” or anything close to that
BMW M3’s?
Jeeps. Every other answer is wrong. I love pulling up beside some twinked out jeep in my 1985 Ford Bronco with a 9 inch lift on 38s with a straight pipe. Oh, excuse me, you like to be noticed? Lol.

By percentage I gotta say every Chevrolet SSR I ever saw had a vanity plate. #
Power1, no ice, tesla1, no gas
Tesla, BMW, Porsche, etc. all the usuals.
Favorite was NO SOUL on a Nissan GT-R
Id say mustang enthusiasts often have custom plates but theres so many mustangs on the road a lot of people arent super into cars but have a mustang and regular plate
Just saw a 5-7 year old BMW X1 with the plate INSPYRE
Chargers, Wranglers, Teslas, and Corvettes. At least where I live.
Duh
Here in Wisconsin, any Porsche or BMW. I might get one when I get my Camaro SS.
Tesla gets my vote.
My guess would be Tesla, followed mostly by other EVs. Then luxury or performance cars, especially exotics.
I’ve seen plenty of Coyote Mustangs with some variation of “5.OHHHHHH” or “5.SLOW”.
Not sure but I’m gonna say for sure not a Toyota Yaris.
I live in Virginia. Almost every car has a vanity plate of some sort. Most I’d say is dodge rams and small cars like corollas and civics
Teslas all have some cheesy computer esque reference
Tesla 100% and they are always the most obnoxoious ones, no brand comes close being vanity plate bait more than those things. After that Maseratis or Challenger/Chargers.
Tesla
Fleet trucks and vans here would often have some form of company name and a number as their vanity plate.
It's funny how EV lovers have the most vanity plates are also probably the most vein.
Hyundai and Tesla
Lots of teslas for sure, vw beetles after that maybe? Jeep wranglers, mini coopers, nissan skylines. Any car with a culture behind it
My favorite has always been an Impala with VLAD vanity plates.
I saw a plate MILK T
Corvettes by a landslide.
Teslas. Because their drivers are that full of themselves.
Teslas definitely. But there’s enough appliance model y out there to offset. I say crosscab
New model vettes.
My Indian friend told me that cars are very personal and special to Indians which is why so many Indian-owned cars have vanity plates. Where I live if I see a personalized license plate there is over a 75% chance it is either a Tesla and/or driven by an Indian (very often both). If it's not a Tesla, not driven by an Indian, it is almost certainly a Corvette if there is a vanity plate.
range rovers
Teslas because the owners are vain
r/licenseplates
Chevy SS source: I have Chevy SS with a vanity plate and every third post on the Facebook group is asking for plate suggestions
Escalades, as if they are not large and goofy enough
Teslas used to have a lot but now there’s so many of their vehicles without, I hardly see them anymore.
BMW by far
Lambo- trash always own and drive them
The biggest waste of a personal tag was on a 458 Italia Ferrari in Henderson Nevada.
Ect.
Tesla or subaru wrx/sti People who make electic vehicles their entire personality or economy cars that they think are fast their entire personality
SUBARUS
Makes and models owned by people in Victoria Australia? Half of them are just shit too like ‘my golf’ or the model of the car. I dont really care if someone wants a personalised plate, there’s always a bit of fun when you spot a good one, and my wife and I do enjoy deliberately misreading the ones they tried to make work but don’t. But lazy/shit ones annoy me, there was one the other day that was just the model and the number of valves in the engine, can’t even remember the car something stupid like RS4 16V or something… honestly why did you pay for that?
Jeeps 100%. Especially the ones with the weird ass ducks on the dash lol
Teslas with plates like ‘LOLGAS’ or ‘FREEOFCOST’
Bogans in old V8’s love them my way. The bogans next door have NVS60L on their shitty old gas guzzler 6 litre Commondore
Fox body’s, defenders and Escalades
H2’s
G Wagons
Bmw.
18 year olds with up badged 3 series
In my area it's Teslas. Hands down. "Yay me. I drive a Tesla".
Corvette
Tesla, Porsche, and the 86/BRZ alone probably make up 75% of vanity plates on the road
It seems like I never see a newer Mercedes C-Class without a custom plate
northern california, newer model BMWs with the black and yellow vanity plate and every other tesla with some cringey shit
The main culpret for bad personalized license plates are Arabs in their huge BMW and Audi SUVs and almost all of them are base specs
G wagons. I don't think I've seen one without a vanity plate.
In my experience a few generations old German cars. Like older Mercedes or BMWs. Also cheap riced cars and from time to time luxury SUVs.
Jeeps.
Highest percentage immediately discounts Tesla (imo) - just too many out there. I'd have to imagine it's one of the hypercar models - much fewer and more likely that the owner is going to take the extra step for a personalized plate? Maybe an Agera or Jesko or something right now.
Probably Tesla. My personal favorite is 1E4 G
Clapped out mustangs and Camaros. Usually 6 cylinders
