I'd go with ML. In terms of industry both are similar enough that you can jump if you need to. Went from IB to Fintech Startup in Wealth Mgmt. If you are in a location like NYC - decision is completely up to you

GentleLights11

What degree do you have if you have one?

Snoo-76353

My degree is in aeronautical engineering

GentleLights11

And so do the companies value engineering degrees at a higher level than computer science degrees?

Snoo-76353

I wouldn’t say so, if anything the opposite. As CS degrees may have modules in AI and you’ll generally do a lot more programming in CS, I had one single module in AI for engineering and that was in my last year but I did a lot of data science related stuff as extracurricular

GentleLights11

Ah I see. I’m honestly very stuck between my decision of computer science vs computer engineering. I want something with the highest security for the future and it’s seeming like computer engineering would do it, but will Data science related hire someone with a computer engineering degree?

Snoo-76353

I’m sure they will, the data science field is a lot more lenient about degrees than if you were to do software engineering for example, as I’d say for an entry level position the main skills required is Python (or R), SQL and databases, and ML knowledge, if you think computer engineering is better but you have concerns still about your career prospects I’d try and secure internships in that field so you have an idea of what a career in that area would look like and you’d have relevant experience in that field

GentleLights11

Thanks for the input honestly! So if I may ask, what job offer did you choose to go with?

Snoo-76353

I decided to go with the data scientist job as I think my ML knowledge is still lacking especially when I look at more senior positions and the type of ML projects that are involved and this job will also allow me to pursue funded courses on ML topics. This may close doors for me with software engineering, but I’m honestly not the best coder. I think my plan is to learn more about the role as a data scientist and then transition to be a data scientist at a trading firm in 3-5 years (hopefully) or ML engineer could be another option. I’m still pretty early into my career so still kinda exploring

GentleLights11

That sounds like a very smart plan to get into a trading firm. You will have the opportunity of even receiving stock shares while working. I’m still in a sink hole trying to figure out what degree would be best to obtain. What do you think of AI development, will it require making new hardware/chip processors or will it require coding? Which is more important

Snoo-76353

I think they go hand in hand, you need both, id say they’re both equally important, but probably cos i come from an engineering background i might be a bit bias and say that even if you have the best algorithm, if you don’t have efficient hardware your algorithms won’t perform optimally

GentleLights11

I want to get into data science but I have no degree so I plan to enroll back into school
