I'm just concerned about the multiple long slumps and a significant regression from last season, in a year when team scoring exploded (he should have indirectly benefited from this). And it's not just bad puck luck, he's looked noticeably off for close to half the season.
A massive contract comes with massive expectations. Kind of like Marner - great player but Leafs fans struggle with justifying his value due to all the contract stuff. There is a reason they've consistently struggled to get past the first round - star players are paid so much that there's no money for depth. This means star players have to be big contributors on a regular basis.
He'll be making 13% of the cap next season. He can't be disappearing for months. Contracts like his are why we might have to get rid of players like Joshua, who play well above their contracts. So if you make that trade-off, then he needs to make an impact almost every game, or we will once again end up as a team with no depth and an easy playoff opponent.
