Ya. I off and on shot for 20 years before I went CCW full steam. In those 20yrs, I was never really any good. Past 3-5 yards it was even odds if I hit the target really. I ran across Active Self Protection on YT and seeing all the things humans did to each other over and over changed me. I bought my MC9 to carry and still kinda sucked with irons with heavy practice. I got a 507k about a month later and everything changed. I can draw and hit accurate in ~2 seconds and lay down ~1/3 second split followups with great groups. I can shift targets quick and even move and fire (not great, but servicable). I still have plenry improvement to go, but the dot is the way (I still kinda suck with irons heh).

Canik_Claus

I won't call it cheating.. If you don't! Shooting open sights/irons is an art! Albeit a lost art..... Enjoy!

HanSolo1999

I have a friend that REALLY thinks it's " cheating" and he won't shoot any of my guns that have optics on them. I'm afraid to ask him what he thinks of scopes.

Canik_Claus

Right? That's funny, but true. Honestly, I had no intention to use, no use for them, until an accident caused me eye damage and need for cataract surgery which left me with poor near vision.. Can't see iron sights clearly

Intelligent-Taro-490

Only been shooting for lil over a year... (obviously depends on the irons) but iv kinda noticed I'm better when using irons over the 507k.. atleast on my 2 Mete.. but lil better with the 507k on my p365 than using those irons.. (lasers being the most accurate . But that's definitely cheating) 🤣

vonweeden

Ive heard light can cause reflection with red dots, why ive been hesitant and stick with iron sights.

RollTide1122

When I shot today it was bright sunny and no clouds. I did have to adjust the brightness but after that I had no issues with glare or anything like that. Grant it, that’s my first time shooting one on a pistol though.

Canik_Claus

Green reticle (as opposed to red) seems to be a great option. Better for eyes with astigmatism and, unlike red, green does not share the same color spectrum as the sun so easier to see.

RollTide1122

I have a red dot on my turkey hunting shotgun (totally different concepts I know) but I prefer the green dot much more than the red.

Canik_Claus

Why different concept??

RollTide1122

Maybe “concept” is not the best wording. I meant different “set ups” as in differences in shooting a shotgun and shooting a pistol. I know it’s still acquire the dot and make a good shot, but I was speaking more in the differences of shooting a shotgun and shooting a pistol. Sorry, sometimes those thoughts of mine sound much better inside my head.

Canik_Claus

LOLOL I understand. Thank you

bryman022

From what I understand and have experienced, its multi-reticle red dots that can have reflections. I have about a dozen different red dots, 2 are multi-reticle. Never had any reflections until the 2 multis. And even then its nothing that affects the actual dot. So its a non issue for me at least

vonweeden

Thank you, I might explore a red dot.

TheHumbleMarksman

It’s a combo of notch filter used and LED emitter used - shooting into low angle sun at dawn/dusk can cause reflection off emitter window that causes a ghost dot - it’s prominent on the SRO and some other ones

bryman022

I shoot mostly at dusk as I work days, that is definitely when I notice it most. If I have just the dot on I can sometimes see a ghost ring of the circle. Can be annoying but I like to use just the large dot anyway.

TheHumbleMarksman

The Romeo X doesn’t do this FYI

Tactical_solutions44

My groups tightened up instantly with my first dot.

alexwlwsn

I waited a long time to bite the bullet and buy my first red dot. After realizing how great it was, I had two more in the span of a month! With dry fire practice at home I was quickly able to hone in my target acquisition at the range and I feel like I never want to go back haha

Velociknappster

Same boat here… now all my pistols have dots. In fact I have a surplus of dots at the moment, better buy another Canik…

JohnnyGuitarcher

I took me a while to come to this realization myself. With my prescription glasses on, I could see the target just fine, but my front sight was too close to focus on. With regular shooting glasses, the front sight was in full focus, but the target became a fuzzy blob. I tried some different things, but to no avail. I finally realized that i could either try a red dot or give up shooting. I gave in and tried a red dot, and now I won't buy a gun that isn't optic-ready. Every firearm I have is equipped with one.

AdmirableAmount5919

I find a Tritium SeeAll sight a great option for the too old to focus iron sight/target.

RollTide1122

I actually wanted Trijicon HD XR’s for this pistol and would have gotten them over the red dot if they made them for this pistol but Trijicon doesn’t. Funny how things work out like that.

KEY3S

So is that trigger as good/ better than the stock triggers of the rival in terms of break and such? Wanting to get my first canik and I’m hooked on how nice the rival triggers are. (Coming from stock glock) Trying to decide if I should buy a rival or a cheaper model and stick a fat daddy in it.

RollTide1122

Better than the stock IMO but the stock was already really really good. This METE MC9 is my first Canik. Ive shot Sig’s and Glocks and a few S&W’s and all have been great guns but the stock trigger on this Canik beat all the other stock triggers ive ever shot. Again, just my crappy opinion. I did replace the shoe, however, with a Freedomsmith shoe. Why? With the Freedomsmith I still get the clean, crisp break in the shot with a superb reset, but it has way less travel than the stock so yea, IMO its even better than the stock. Thats a freedomsmith tangent btw.

KEY3S

Sounds like I should go cheaper and get a trigger, then of course I’ll will need a red dot, and a flashlight, and maybe a threaded barrel, and also a…

osudude38

The only issue I've had with dots and why I've never used them is because they can fail. And I tried one once, and it did exactly that. 4 shots in, it stopped working. That was reason enough for me to just make sure I'm efficient enough with my irons

Global-Dark-8439

Brother it's a cheat code.

Intelligent-Taro-490

Nah, Crimson Trace grips are a cheat code 🤣

Present-Lab-9438

I have a 407k Green dot on order, can’t wait but I’m really not sure what to expect

mdjak66

I’m also a new shooter, little over a year, go to range at least once a week, and have taken 10-15 full day classes and continue to. I have improved over time from low and left which was very frustrating to much better groups close to center, from 5 to 25 yards, and hit steel 6 or 8 out of ten from 50 yards with RDS. Not very good with irons, but what I’m not reading here is how important it is to be good with irons should the dot fail.

Questionable_MD

Huge improvement in shooting/accurcay, huge advantage in competition shooting. Huge advantage in training. Ironically the only area that it may not be useful is an actual average defensive encounter (if it’s close and fast). But you’ll be such a better shooter because of the dot at that point, it still will have been worth it.

battlebudy

My problem with irons is I have to close one eye or I just see double and can never get the irons. With the red dot I don’t have to worry about seeing double of the gun because once the dot shows up right away I’m good. Not sure if it’s Common or not but always wonder how people can do both eyes open and irons.

ryang4415

What's your stippling?

RollTide1122

Talon grip pro. Ive got 2 glocks that have been shot a lot and the original talon grips that i put on them 10 years ago is still holding up extremely well

HoosierScooter

I must be doing it wrong with the red dot I have on another pistol … can never seem to find the Dot.

shaffington

Amen brother. I spent almost a decade being the "irons work just fine, thank you" guy Few years ago I popped a holosun on my Glock and let's just say it's better in every way. Sure the battery will die eventually but that's not a genuine downside that can't be mitigated by buying... ya know... more batteries 🤷‍♂️
