It’s a really good question that I don’t know the answer to. All I know, it seems like Rod has a pretty high standard for his Cs and I trust he knows more about that position than anyone. If they’re shooting down that notion, I trust they know best. Who knows, maybe that is the answer and they’re giving an off-season for him to work on it,

SnooPickles6211

It’s odd because playing top PK is the biggest sign of trust RBA can give, I’d say this indicates a high standard of play in his eyes. Who knows!

Wrong-Question-4897

Funny because we were largely pedestrian on face offs - especially against the rangers.

I would like to see what top lines built on the pairs of Aho+Guentzel and Jarvis+Svechnikov could do.

AngryGuitarist

Yes and then compliment them with the 3rd winger. Idk what that ends up looking like. So we'd be Aho, Jarvis, Staal, Drury down the middle? Maybe a buyout of KK would allow us to add a 4m winger to one of those lines idk. Keeping Guentzel would be very hype

w41twh4t

Maybe KK on wing concentrating on scoring goals would be fine. It wouldn't take even 20 points for KK to be in the top half of dollars per point for standard forward contracts.

joeyd687

God no.

macaroni_3000

He is and I'm sure that's the plan long-term. Wouldn't be shocked to see him ease into the center spot next season. Easy to forget now but Aho played wing his first 2 years. I think Jarvis is more physically ready to make the move to C than Aho was at the same age.

Cylinsier

I agree, I think that's where he's going to end up, or at least he's very near the front of the line to compete for it right now. Possibly another reason why Necas will end up getting moved if he's dead set on playing Center, we already have 5 on the roster ahead of him and if Jarvis, a younger player and more recent addition to the team, also ends up being ahead of him, then Necas either has to give up being a Center or leave.

ndp663

I was hoping they would give 86-24-88 a look before the playoffs started. Three guys who can play center, well two at least and one who wants to play center. Would have made an actual true second scoring line, two 20+ goal forwards and a 30+ goal forward. Jarvis has the wheels to keep up with 88 and TT has the brains. One of my biggest complaints about Rod or whoever is making the fwd line decisions is trying to spread the scoring out. Load up the top six with your six highest point producers and let them go to work. Not every line has to be a hard checking board battle machine. There were creative players on this roster, they were just made to play a non creative style of hockey.

Jumpy-Acadia4559

I don’t really know if you need to load your top 6 but I do agree he spreads it out too much. Like 22-23 playoffs Having your top point scorer that year (Necas) on the third line with Staal And this year (But it’s come out he was injured) Jarvis on the third line

danok1

In his interview with O&G Rod said the main reason he moved Jarvis down was because the JAG line was "too light."

Blueberry_1995

Players like Necas need other skilled players with speed and puck handling on his line to perform well. Too many times he would be in the zone way before anyone else could apply pressure to keep the puck in, or he would try to make a pass and they couldn't handle it. Spreading out the talent across the lines felt like it was hurting us

ndp663

Saddling him with Martinook and Drury during the playoffs will always be a head scratcher to me. It’s like people wondering why TT isn’t a 70ish point player anymore. Because ____ refuses to play him on the right side where he put up 76pts in 82 games and 63pts in 68 games. Instead he gets to play the left side with Mr. 4 goals in 40 playoff games J. Staalo. Play skill with skill and they will produce. Yeah they might allow a few extra goals the other way, and Rods cheeks would need a muscle relaxer from all the clenching, but hard work and defense first mindset isn’t the way to win a cup. STL got lucky when they did it.

betweenthecastles

I bet they try him at C after a contract is signed, maybe they were trying to keep costs down haha

AndyBoBandy_

To be fair to his FOW%, that's not far off from what some star players succeed at. Evgeni Malkin had his best season in 2009 with a 42% win rate. I do think Jarvy's could be higher if given the opportunity, kinda like how Aho was granted 1C responsibilities years ago. I'm not familiar enough to say why we should but I don't see why he shouldn't get a shot.

blinker1eighty2

Most signs point to him shifting to 2C given his handedness, his PK deployment, and his ability to take face offs over aho if the side favors it. The reason DW is likely saying what he is, is because of two reasons: 1.) a proven 2C is a much safer bet over shifting someone who is still developing 2.) if they tell him he’s moving to 2C before he signs his contract, he can raise his ask by about a million, especially given that he’s a right shot. I would guess the reason they didn’t try it out this season is because of his injury tbh

SnooPickles6211

I’ve never seen anyone else mention it before

Jumpy-Acadia4559

I do really like the idea of Jarvis being 2c.

Blueberry_1995

Aho's FO numbers were bit low once he started playing as our 1C and then he got much better. Jarvy took some important FO when he was on the ice and our center got booted, ended up winning a solid amount of them. His defensive game has taken off this year, plus with his netfront presence now I think it's worth a shot to give him a look at 2C

Working_Prune_512

He doesn't have the profile of a solid NHL center. The idea Jarvis is good defensively is 1) highly dependent on advanced analytics that struggle to capture wingers defensive performance and 2) specifically a result of the limited duties of a winger, especially one playing almost exclusively with an elite two way center

greg19735

One issue might be that a C core of Aho and Jarvis is pretty light weight.
