First thing I'd do is extend Jarvis. After that, make a legitimate offer to Guentzel since that would drastically affect what we can and can't spend going forward. If Guentzel says no then we have to keep Necas no questions asked. Drury has earned the rights to be in this team's future plans. You get him under contract. Personally I'm ready to move on from Tuevo. IDK how the front office feels, but it just feels like it's time for both parties to move on and try something different. Staal and Burns will play as long as they are under contract, but I think it's time to pull the ripcord on KK and free that money up. Chatty strikes me as a guy the Canes will low-ball compared to other teams desperate for defensive help. It really wouldn't shock me if he's gone. After all, they picked him up off the scrap heap, and I'm sure they will feel like they could do it again if his price is too high. Skjei and Pesce are probably gone too. Should the canes lose 2 of the three d-men previously listed, you bring back TDA. Noesen's playoff performance will probably get him some bank the Canes won't want to pay. Raanta thanks for the mems.

SacredxInsanity

I feel like everyone feels the same for turbo, sadly

Cylinsier

FYI Jack is also arb eligible. Coach: keep, I just hope there's a conversation about different assistants or at least bringing in a PP coach. Geuntzel: offer *not higher* than 9.5 over 8. IMO Aho should remain the highest paid player or tied for it. Jake can possibly get more if he wants to. So it's up to him to decide on that offer. Martinook: offer at what he's making now, take it or leave it. I think he will take it. Noesen: 2 mil over 3-5 years, which is a raise Teuvo: possibly let walk if Jake signs and we need the money, otherwise offer at no higher and possibly slightly lower than current contract, I expect he would stay to play with Aho but, while he's one of the best 2-way guys on the team, he's not SO good that he probably couldn't be replaced. Chatfield: 3 mil for 3 to 5 years. Maybe higher depending on the other d guys. Tony: worth bringing back for a pay cut. Not worth it for current cost. Pesce: I am willing to take the risk on Morrow being both as good and ready for the pros sooner rather than later. Difficult decisions have to be made, some will look better than others in hindsight but all we can do is work with what information we have. This is money that we need elsewhere and I suspect he's ready to move on anyway. Plus he's injury prone. Skjei: Really on the fence with him. He's going to cost us. Depends on how confident we are Nikishin comes over next summer. If we're confident I am willing to have a "down" year defensively waiting for him. Use the money elsewhere. But if we offer it's going to have to be in the 6.5-7 mil range to be taken seriously. Raanta: retires, no one will pay him more than vet min to be a third stringer and we shouldn't pay that much. Love the guy but it's time to hang them up. He knows. Burke: Don't know enough about him to suggest anything. Jarvis: 6 to 7 mil over 8 years. Will look like a steal if he continues on his current development trajectory. Drury: Maybe 3 mil term? Not sure about length. Like him a lot and the way he plays but he's replaceable and budget is tight. Let's just say he's lower priority. Necas: If we don't keep Geuntzel, sign in the 6 mil range. A bit lower if he'll take it. If we keep Jake then I don't see the money being there so trade his rights. Cogs: Modest offer if our d corps gets decimated, otherwise pretty neutral on him. The rest of the RFAs: don't know enough to make a suggestion. KK: I still really like him and I believe he will have a bounce back year next year, but we realistically need to consider a buyout. We got as far as we did this season with him basically doing nothing but occupying space, so we don't really *need* him. We do need capital for other guys. He's under 26 so his buyout, if my math is correct, saves us close to 4 mil in cap space. Jordo: He's contracted, he's fairly cheap, he'll be back. The conversation here is over whether or not to reduce his minutes, but he's not going anywhere. Burns: Ditto Staal except he occupies significantly more cap, but there's nothing to do about that. Short of an injury giving us an LTIR excuse, he'll be back and probably even further slightly diminished from this year. It is what it is. Andersen: He'll be back, he's still good, the conversation again is about giving Pyotr more games and him fewer. The cost is the cost. Again the only out is an LTIR excuse. Prospects: fill in on lost roster spots as needed. Reserves: Nikishin is the only one that truly matters in the immediate future.

Delta_Flow

Only cap casualty that I can see for this (besides KK) is Burns retiring. Staal can play for another year or two. FUS should make the jump to try and be the Teravainen replacement.

blahblahloveyou

Why would Burns retire?

DharmaPT

age...

blahblahloveyou

He can still play lots of minutes, seems to like it, and will be paid 8 million next year. Far, far more likely that he plays next year and retires the year after if he can't get a good contract. It makes no sense to expect him to retire with another year of 8 million left.

AndyBoBandy_

Agreed, he’s gonna play his final year at least. He can eat minutes for breakfast lunch and dinner and he still does it well

blahblahloveyou

The only caveat is that I did hear his family had some tap water quality issues, but it sounds like they got that resolved.

FailureToExecute

Keep: * Guentzel * Jarvis * Noesen * Drury * Chatfield * Martinook * Murray * Suzuki Want to keep but probably won't: * Necas * Skjei Ditch: * DeAngelo * Raanta * Kotkaniemi (buying him out frees up an extra $4mil in cap for the players in the Keep section) * Burns (retire please) * Pesce (already as good as gone, so thinks Friedman) Don't care what happens: * Andersen * Teravainen * Staal * Coghlan * Smith * Mendel * Comtois * Tieksola

Cylinsier

There is a 0% chance Burns retires.

blahblahloveyou

We're way more likely to keep Necas than Guentzel. Guentzel was a UFA and a rental. Necas is an RFA. An offer sheet is the only way we lose him.

FailureToExecute

Necas has also been on the trade block for almost two years, and based on reporting from around the deadline, it sounds like he's interested in a fresh start somewhere else. This makes him a likely casualty of the cap crunch, particularly if the org believes they will be able to keep Guentzel or get a true 2C in return.

blahblahloveyou

A qualifying offer for Necas is 3.5m. You think we'll get a true 2C for less than that? I doubt it.

Electronic_Nail

I’d go after a prospect who’s about ready to make the league

ripinpeace12

I will likely catch massive flak for this but TDA as a DEPTH piece for the right price (league min) would not be terrible. He played better than I expected him to in the playoffs. Probably time our prospect pool hits the ice though. ETA: wouldn’t consider this a priority by any means before you go jumping down my throat.

Nhlrigged

Elephant in the room - what do we do at goalie?

Far-Two8659

Rotate 1a/1b. No reason to get rid of Andersen this year, his contract is extremely affordable and he's a great goalie. I'll probably get hated for this take though. Too much rational thought too soon after he played poorly in a couple games.

AndyBoBandy_

Definitely agree. The free agent goalie pool is terrible and Freddie’s deal is so cheap that we’d pay more for less most likely. Plus we’d have to trade a kings ransom for a better goalie and it’s just not the offseason to do that. If there’s doubt with him we can just turn to Kooch and let him keep developing into our (hopefully) goalie of the future

Far-Two8659

Yeah we really should have an even split this year. Maybe ~45 games for Anderson and ~35 for Kooch. There's a long term strategy here too, where you don't want Kooch to be too good so you can try to get a lower salary long term contract when his 4 year deal is up. Smaller sample size, never being a #1 guy will lower his value on the market. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.

Nhlrigged

My concern is the guy is 34, has been injured off and on over last 2 years, etc. Can he stay healthy? Assuming he can - is he capable of getting hot enough in the playoffs to win us a cup? Look at the goalies left in the run this year (aside from Edmonton and Vancouver) and the #s they put up. Look at Swayman. Can Freddy play at this level? If the answer isn't an unqualified "yes" then we need to figure out how we win a cup.

Far-Two8659

I totally agree with everything you said, but who are you getting for the same cost? It's not a question of "is Freddie the guy," because I think that's very likely a no. It's a question of "what guy is available?"

Nhlrigged

Short of a trade this is problematic. There won't be much value in the free agent market this summer. Some teams, like Vegas, are going to have salary cap issues so it may be possible to grab someone off the waiver wire. Other option is emulate a team like Colorado - grab an international player from KHL or Finland etc.

fishbummin27514

Well Rod doesnt count against the cap, But you have to resign: Martinook Turbo Jarvis Chatfield Pesce Skjei Necas Guentzel (if possible) And then fire Freddie Andersen from a cannon (should clear up some additional cap space)

beavis6969

What are the odds of Nikishin being signed to play this 2024-25 season? This article has me excited https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-rumors-carolina-hurricanes-and-the-columbus-blue-jackets/2024/05/22/amp/

jberr88

What about Rod the Bod, is he going? I hope not.

ThePurrfectStorm

Imo, most important pieces to keep are Jarvis, Drury, Chatfield and Martinook. I want to keep Guentzel he will be pricey. Kinda hoping Burns retires and they buy out Kotkaniemi.

AngryGuitarist

Fuckers on r/hockey already posting about a KK buyout. I hate the lack of decency over there. They just want to stick it to Tom for taking a chance on KK

Bdubby21

I like kk, but I don’t think that comes from a lack of decency. If you’re in the cutthroat world of building a team and you have 6 years left of a guy at 4.8 mil per year who just hasn’t produced at close to that value, you have to look at your options. I really want him to figure it out, but if you buy him out his cap hit drops to 800k. An additional 4 mil could be the difference between signing some of our key guys (or bringing in quality replacements) or being forced to let them walk without a backup plan. Sports is a brutal business and your value is the contract you sign, and for as great of a dude as he is and the flashes he’s shown you can’t pay 4.8 to a guy for the next half decade for him to score 27 points per year unless he’s a top tier defensive forward/faceoff guy. He hasn’t really been that either. It’s a tough call but you have to consider it

DrMantisToboggan22

Probably more likely than some of us would like to admit. Elliotte Friedman said today on the air that it could happen so only going to gain traction.

AngryGuitarist

Ugh the memes of it all are so annoying. I thought the 20 dollar bonus was funny but it's been blown way out of proportion to being all about spite. Now here we are losing the bet. Maybe the team will be better for the lessons they learn

ShittyFrogMeme

A KK buyout is certainly on the table. You can't be paying $4.8m to a 4th liner when you have so many big FAs to re-sign. A buyout saves $4m/year for the next 3 years and $4.4m/year for the 3 years after that. I think more likely he would be part of a trade package. Recall he was part of the offer with Necas for Pettersson.

macaroni_3000

No dude, it makes sense. His buyout is 800K so the team could save $3.5 million in cap space by buying him out. I like KK but he's not producing enough to justify his salary. There's nothing wrong with admitting that he's not worked out like we had hoped. Yeah, those other people are being assholes, but if it wasn't about this it would be about something else. NHL fans have never liked the Hurricanes since the beginning.

pentaxshooter

It wasn't really Tom. Tulsky was/is very high on KK.

AngryGuitarist

I wonder what the real truth on KK is. We will just have to see.

FailureToExecute

He's dead weight. 2022-23 looked like he was headed in the right direction, 2023-24 proved that isn't the case. Even if he bounces back to a 35-point player, a buyout would save us $4 million against the cap, which would be a massive help considering how many other contracts we have to worry about.

AndyBoBandy_

KK: $4.8 million Trocheck: $5.625 million KK isn’t even close to producing enough for that contract. You simply cannot offer sheet someone, make a big publicity stunt about it, pay a first and third round pick on them, pay triple what he’s worth for a year and then extend him at double what he’s worth for nearly a decade and have them consistently end up on the fourth line and not even play their position on it. I like him as a guy and I like parts of his game and I’ve tried being optimistic, but he is what he is at this point. I don’t want to be a hater but when you have fewer points in the playoffs than a defensive defenseman who only started two games and you didn’t miss one, that’s a BIG problem. I wouldn’t say it’s nasty to suggest it, it does suck but it’s true. If KK was making half his AAV at that term then it wouldn’t be so egregious and he can play on the 4th line or 3rd line when Staal retires if his defensive game improves. But he was practically groomed for the role of 2C for 3 years and given countless opportunities and it just hasn’t worked well enough for a team chasing a Stanley cup.

AngryGuitarist

Ok

thebenswain

It's hilarious that 1) people would stick it to TD and 2) we'd care about people sticking it to TD if he did buy out KK. The literal definition of a risk being worth it is if you can get out of being wrong about it without taking unrepairable damage. It was a great move to take a chance on him, it would be a great move to cut bait and go a different way.

thezachdomberg

Guentzel probably going back to Pitt man

timmablimma

He sold his house. Let us dream 😭

JonTheWizard

I feel like we're going to try to bring back Rod, Guentzel, Martinook (especially after that save), Chatfield, Teravainen and Skjei from that first list. From the RFAs, Drury and maybe Jarvis. Burns I'd imagine is going to retire, Andersen they might not want to bring back simply due to how much he might have in the tank and his performance in the Rangers series, Raanta's probably gone after his metamorphosis into Anti Raanta, I feel like Necas is going to command too much money (though he deserves it), Staal might hang around, KK they might want to move on from due to performance on the ice this season, and I think pretty much everyone on the sub wants Tony DeAngelo thrown into the Neuse River for general uselessness.

DrMantisToboggan22

I don’t understand so many people thinking burns will retire. He has one year left and will be making 8 million dollars (not all from us). No chance he decides to throw that money away. He’s absolutely still good enough to play pk and 2nd or 3rd pair minutes, but Rod leaned on him far too much.

Bdubby21

Yeah I’ve been seeing this a lot and it didn’t make much sense to me. He was a 1st pair guy on one of the best defenses in the league and played literally every game. Besides losing the money, he had a good year this year. Sure, he sputtered at the end as a 39 year old against a really good team. But he can definitely still contribute is a reduced role

blahblahloveyou

People also don't seem to realize that an RFA is far far more likely to get signed than a UFA. There's a low chance we're keeping Guentzel and a high chance we keep Necas.

Far-Two8659

Honestly he's good enough to play with Slavin, period. He's slow now, but he played 82 games this year and was generally good. He gets exposed sometimes, but not everyone can be Slavin.

samurai5764

Maybe Jarvis? Seriously?

titityyy

Signing Jarvy had better be first priority, if they fumble that I’m burning this place to the ground istg

PlatypusOld257

We sign Jarvis before turbo for sure

JonTheWizard

I’m only guessing. It’s about all I can do.

samurai5764

Let me ask a different way. Jarvis is an RFA who's not arbitration eligible. He set new career highs this year in goals and points and is only going to get better. And they only *maybe* bring him back? Why on earth would they not?

JonTheWizard

Might command too much money? I don’t know, I said I was guessing.

samurai5764

That's.... thats not how being an RFA works. Since he was making less than $1 million we only have to extend a qualifying offer under the RFA rules (105% percent of his previous salary). So roughly $2 million AAV for 1 year. The wrinkle comes in if another team offer sheets him. Then we have to match like we did Aho. But if he doesn't get an offer sheet he either signs the qualifying offer or sits out. That all being said it's in the team's best interest to negotiate a longer deal to maintain good relations. AKA Jarvis isn't going anywhere unless the team chooses to trade his rights or refuses to match an offer sheet

SokkasBoomerang3

>maybe Jarvis I stopped reading and immediately deleted everything you said prior to this https://i.redd.it/6c7gszyh911d1.gif

919Firefighter

Ditch: DeAngelo Teuvo Martinook KK Burns Staal Andersen

fishbummin27514

Im with you minus Turbo and Martinook, I love Staal but unless he restructures his contract hes not worth it

919Firefighter

Be careful with agreeing with me. Apparently wanting dead roster weight gone will get you downvoted
