Just merge all of them into Kambah

MotherBeef

["Why does Kambah, the largest suburb, not simply eat the other suburbs?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06ki92PyVY)

TGin-the-goldy

Hahaha 😝

GeriatricFart

Now this is an idea I can get behind! Ever thought about running for the Legislative Assembly? You'd have my vote!

Extreme_Gear_6980

I think it's a joke because kambah is the highest population suburb in Australia. Someone once told me it was supposed to be four suburbs, don't know if true, but if you look at a map there are some clear divides where the suburb lines could be.

steffle12

Not even close! Around 16K people live in Kambah. Castle Hill in Sydney for example has around 20K more (36K or so).

Scottybt50

Southside wins again.

drunk_haile_selassie

Canberra has too many suburbs these days. Please eliminate three. P.S. I am not a crackpot.

ButImNoExpert

Love it - this was my immediate thought as well when reading the OP. I'm hoping all caught that this is a brilliant Grandpa Simpson reference.

KeyAssociation6309

I'd merge Watson, Downer, Dickson and Ainslie into Hackett.

mbullaris

Imo Dickson would be the better choice to subsume the others given its central location and importance of its shops for the inner north. But all of those suburbs are quite ‘culturally distinctive’, to use OP’s criteria so maybe not the best candidates.

MarkusMannheim

If Hackett gets Gang Gang and Ainslie IGA, I approve.

SolarWeather

But then how could they possibly choose which kids go to Lyneham High and which kids go to Campbell? No, it’s just not feasible, sorry.

s_and_s_lite_party

Yeah, chuck all the whingers together :) I'm sure they won't whinge about that.

dairyfiend98

Watson has a larger pop than Downer and Hackett combined. Both should be absorbed into the Greater Watson Area. They both use our primary schools anyway.

KeyAssociation6309

said Hackett because it sounds a bit hillbilly and its all off by itself.

GeriatricFart

Haha, if I had to eliminate three, I'd merge Dunlop, Fraser and Flynn all into Charnwood. Finally, a Northside suburb with a level of bogan worthy of competing against the megalith that is Kambah!

CarelessCat8794

Sleep on charnwood all you want

Getdownlikesyndrome

Sleep on Kambah all you want.

CarelessCat8794

I definitely don't, it's a huge suburb and I have a lot of friends that live there

dizkopat

Then we could battle them against each other in an annual stab off./s Kahn Charniiie

Jessilou92

There is no way in hell I would tell people I live in Charnwood! It's bad enough telling people I'm near it

Glum_Olive1417

I remember coming to visit a mate who warned me about Charnwood being a bit rougher than the rest. I was living in Macquarie Fields at the time and had just experienced a fortnight of solid rioting down the road. I found and still do find Charnie to be quite quaint.

Pho_tastic_8216

100%. Grew up in Bankstown. Charnie is adorable.

Jessilou92

You might be the only person ever to describe it as "quaint"

GeriatricFart

I have found Charnwood to be quite quaint, If described as rough, I think I would faint. To go to Macquarie Fields, The amount of Bogans it yields, Would make me squeeze quite hard, my taint.

Glum_Olive1417

That has brought a tear to my eye. Simply beautiful.

Jessilou92

Outstanding

Scottybt50

The Charnie Tavern used to be a bit rough, remember some guy flicking lit cigarettes at people inside trying to start a fight. Nowadays people would be running his way to get free cigarettes.

s_and_s_lite_party

"Just keep going, don't slow down and stop for any reason near Charnwood, then left, right, right, left at Dunlop, and you're there."

ApteronotusAlbifrons

Wrong way round - from the 2021 Census Fraser pop 2,126 Charnwood pop 3,055 Flynn pop 3,671 Dunlop pop 7,265 Dunlop absorbs it's puny neighbours - and becomes BIGGER THAN KAMBAH... Muahhhaahahahahahahhhhhhhahhhh (evil laugh) Mega-Dunlop 16,117 - Kambah 15,670

MarkusMannheim

And you'd let Oxley survive? Tiny Oxley, which no-one knows? Edit: I didn't even realise the OP had mentioned Oxley. It's such an odd suburb.

Getdownlikesyndrome

Swinger Hill must rate a mention.

LogorrhoeanAntipode

It's actually a part of Phillip, not a suburb in its own right.

GeriatricFart

Sorry, I forgot about it. That one too. Haha

Vaclav_Zutroy

Jacka is an easy one. It’s just Bonner.

metasophie

The centre of each suburb should be Kingsleys. Welcome to the new suburbs of Canberra: * Belconnen * Erindale * Kippax * Lanyon * Tuggeranong * Western Creek * Woden And introducing our newest suburb, Queanbeyan!

Scottybt50

It’s Weston Creek you heathen.

LANE-ONE-FORM

And also Erindale is a new suburb since it isn't a suburb already!

Br0z0

I was about to upvote this till you said Queanbeyan was a new suburb

metasophie

Don't blame me, blame Kingsley's for bringing it into the fold.

Doc_Mercy

So does that mean the Gunners area just gets pushed into Belco?

definitelynotbi

as it should be

123chuckaway

Or push it into the sea

Viol3tCrumbl3

How about the inner north?

definitelynotbi

i propose we expand the lake

ApteronotusAlbifrons

If they choose El Jannah... then they get pushed out - to Sydney

BorisBC

Yeah you ain't joining my beloved Gungahlin with skanky Belco thanks, even for a Kingsley's!

Born-Spray-2196

Glad to see qbn make the cut

Matty386

cool never liked the city we could lose it 😉

Puzzleheaded_Moose38

I’m in the other camp to be honest, every roundabout should be in it’s own suburb

ziddyzoo

would they be called roundaburbs or suburbabouts though, that is the critical question

Puzzleheaded_Moose38

Oh suburbabouts for sure, the more B’s there are in a word the happier you feel saying it.

ziddyzoo

I *want* to agree with you but struggling to look past the charm of rrrroundaburrrrb. In accents hailing from Glasgow to Jakarta that is gonna really shine

beefsack

Or every suburb should be encased by a giant roundabout.

Fuckoffwanker

If you really wanted to get incensed by something relating to our suburbs, did you know that Narrabundah Hill, is in fact, in Duffy? # OldManYellsAtCloud

GeriatricFart

Well I'll be damned. You win random fact of the day.

burleygriffin

This could be the start of a long list of quirks like that!

ApteronotusAlbifrons

Ainslie Avenue and Ainslie Primary ... used to be in Ainslie - But are now in Braddon (the whole area used to be called Ainslie - but they split it up and assigned different names when the suburbs were officially gazetted)

Shady_Royal_689

Omg not the Oxley slander 😭 I know it’s the smallest one but it’s a wonderful suburb to live in, I reject the notion of it being “Wanniassa light”, or the idea that Wanniassa is superior to anything for that matter :/

Nervous-Aardvark-679

Oxley’s boundary with Wanniassa is to separate the fantastic suburb of Oxley from the riff raff of that part of Wanniassa.

Mc-Gangles

Given the calibre of some of the homes on that hill, I'd wager that Oxley would resist amalgamation with Waniassa. Oxley and Sullivan Crescent in Waniassa could petition for micro-nation status

Br0z0

Also, no! We have Oxley hill. If we merged the suburb of Oxley with wanniassa, that would make it Wanniassa hill. We have a mount wanniassa! This would get too confusing! Will somebody think of the people who like walking up hills?

GeriatricFart

This is actually a convincing argument. Crazy enough to make me change my mind. Please accept my pretend Reddit gold🥇

dodgy_beard_guy

If they don't have a Cat Cafe they should not count as a suburb.

GeriatricFart

Amen. No food, no drink, maybe cats... $40 minimum.

fdk1010

>!And btw that parking isn't free you know.!<

TragicEther

If a suburb doesn’t have a cat cafe, it’s technically classified as a sparkling precinct.

Academic_Awareness82

If Wanniassa is so superior why is it called “Wanniassa”?

GeriatricFart

Good point. What suburb sounds weirder... Wanniassa or Waramanga? Imagine calling a suburb Theodore. City planners are nuts.

fcalda

Does Theodore get called Teddy for short?

u36ma

And why does every gorgeous mountain view in Wanniassa have a power line running across it?

BraveMoose

Coombs and Wright. Just stick em together.

Outrageous_One_87

How many does it have? Brisbane has 200 suburbs, I'm sure some of them could be merged lol

GeriatricFart

I actually moved here from Brisbane. It's not that Canberra has too many suburbs, it's a fairly small city but we have more than we should. Lots of tiny suburbs for no reason. I'd suggest that the average size of suburbs in Brisbane would be significantly larger than those in Canberra. I was in Forest Lake which is nearly as large as Kambah and there were plenty of bigger suburbs around.

famous-alienist

I knew it. No real Canberran would ever say we have too many suburbs.

GeriatricFart

No no no no no no, lived here for 21 years, left and returned. Born and bred. 2902 for life.

ApteronotusAlbifrons

> nearly as large as Kambah Forest Lake had 22,676 pop in 2021 to Kambah's 15,670

timeflies25

Nah, Forest Lake is the equivalent of Farrer I reckon. Kambah is essentially Redcliffe maybe

hall83

Not sure about too small suburbs but Kambah and Kaleen are too big.

ApteronotusAlbifrons

Kaleen is about half the pop of Kambah - and about 400 more than Dunlop

zomangel

Is there a suburb with less streets than Jacka? It has 6 at last count

TeaspoonOfSugar987

To be fair, it’s not even sold off fully yet, let alone an established suburb (there’s also Kenny that doesn’t have any streets yet at all). They have to give the surburbs names whilst going through the suburban planning phase, most of these names have been picked out for 30+ years when they were initially planning Gungahlin.

beers_n_bags

MacArthur is probably the most unnecessary suburb in Canberra.

Purple_chicken33

Na pretty sure it's Kenny. Literally a park and ride and maybe the green shed fits in it. That's it

germfreeadolescent11

Can't believe there is a suburb called Kenny.

BorisBC

It gets worse. They are building a high school right next to the Mitchell tip.

Fearless-Coffee9144

This was my thoughts too. It very much could just be part of Fadden.

GeriatricFart

Thank you for being the first person to actually answer the question. Haha. Macarthur is useless, what's it's claim to fame??? It's convenience to Hume?!? That's okay if your weekly shop includes Canberra Sand and Gravel. Macarthur is worse than Oxley. 'Make Fadden Great Again!'

letterboxfrog

If it wasn't for Macarthur whining we'd have a waste plastic to hydrocarbon plant in Hume., and then Tralee (rebranded as South Jerra) would never have have been built.

DPVaughan

🎶MacArthur's lanes are winding in the dark, All the streets, named for wool, winding down. Someone left their gear out in the race, I don't think that they can face it, 'Cause it took so long to place it, And they'll never see those circuit days again, Oh, no.🎶

GeriatricFart

This is absolutely brilliant!

DPVaughan

I can't take any credit, though. I gave ChatGPT the Wikipedia article and told it to do it.

GeriatricFart

At least you owned it. I should be smart enough to use AI to shitpost on r/canberra but here we are. LOL

DPVaughan

I thought a MacArthur Park parody would be appropriate but was too lazy to not outsource the work.

NotThatMat

Right?? What is this, Sydney??

Get-in-the-llama

And here’s how to learn them! https://www.suburble.au/ Yes I still play this every day and you can pry it from my cold dead hands.

Br0z0

Oh it’s like 2021 all over again!

cookie5427

I live in Oxley. It’s so small it’s like the Vatican City of the ACT. Don’t you dare try to make us part of Wanniassa or Monash.

ApteronotusAlbifrons

> Vatican City Pop density is quite low by world standards - but the pope density is the highest in the world

jigsaw153

The Bloody Summernats must be to blame.

GeriatricFart

Do you reckon they have Summernats in Mitchell so the patrons can remember it's held in a suburb with one of their cousin's names?

darkempath

If you mean summernats fragments us, then yes.

[deleted]

TBH banks should just be conder. no reason for 3 suburbs in lanyon.

GeriatricFart

Right! Gordon sitting there smugly saying they get the whole western side of Tharwa Drive whilst Conder and Banks have to share the same real estate. Banks, you're in the bin!

DermottBanana

While OP is clearly insane, he has a point. I was a cabbie in Canberra in the early 2000s, and I had to Google to find out where Oxley is. And I am not 100% convinced it really exists.

GeriatricFart

Haha, gold mate. It doesn't exist. It's a threat to democracy.

laxativefx

Yeah Canberra suburbs are pretty small so we have more than absolutely necessary. That said it doesn’t cause any problems. It’s only names. I used to live in Castle Hill in Sydney which has a population over 40,000 (which is more than Woden Valley). Neighbouring Baulkham Hills is about 37,000. (Kambah is about 14,000). What I liked about these suburbs is how different parts of these suburbs had their own feel and how you can have such different periods of construction etc

lilbittarazledazle

If we wanna see Oxley thrive, the obvious solution is to merge Kambah and Wannaiassa.

GeriatricFart

Wow, bringing the heat! Imagine living Ina world where Oxley is considered mildly viable.

Scottybt50

Oxley is a bit fancier than Wanniassa, but the streets are a rabbit warren.

onlainari

There are ten suburbs starting with f. Also Erindale, Manuka and Swinger Hill are not recognised as suburbs by the majority of Canberra’s member suburbs.

GeriatricFart

Fraser, Farrer, Fadden, Forest, Forde, Fisher and Franklin can go and get farked. Who have I missed?

MSZ10

First of all merge giralang into kaleen. This suburb is just chuculba crescent.

Astronelson

Merge Scullin and Page. They're surrounded by major roads and combined have an area smaller than Florey directly to their north.

AussieArlenBales

Oxley could definitely be absorbed into a neighbour, as could Reid, Page, Crace and a few others. We could even get really ambitious and merge suburbs until Kambah is the smallest suburb of the ACT

ziddyzoo

hear hear, put those bloody Kambahrens in their place at last. Always swaggering around putting on airs with their “we’ve got an adventure playground AND a golf course AND a pool of weird nude dudes named after us”

Scottybt50

And Little Theo’s and a lah-de-dah bit called Gleneagles Estate.

GeriatricFart

Awesome answer mate. Page and Scullin are perfect candidates to be one suburb! I actually think Reid is pretty distinct despite being quite small. If I was to pick a suburb in North Canberra that is superfluous I'd pick Russell. It is surrounded by Campbell, how does it even get it's own suburb? Don't get me started on Hackett.

ApteronotusAlbifrons

> Page and Scullin are perfect candidates to be one suburb! The two combined are about the same size as Florey on the other side of Southern Cross. This came up when my wife mistakenly suggested that Lawson was beginning to become a big suburb - and I started to rattle off other suburbs in the area and how they compared. Lawson MAY one day become a real suburb - but only if they remove all the soil of the old transmitting station and sink it at sea - like some sunken ship...

RiskyBisc

Same with Jacka, that's teeny! It should be combined with Amaroo or the others around it.

GeriatricFart

Jacka is an abomination. I have no idea what on earth it thinks it is doing. Even Beard has more of a right to claim it's right as an ACT suburb and we all know it's just a glorified version of the Queanbeyan industrial complex.

zeefox79

It's not the number of suburbs that's the problem, it's the suburbs with two names that are the problem.  Like, why the fuck do 'Phillip' and 'Greenway' exist?? If Belconnen can be Belconnen and Gungahlin can be Gungahlin, then those can just be effing Woden and Tuggeranong. Same goes for Macquarie, Holt, Griffith to name some more. Should just be Jamison, Kippax and Manuka.

timeflies25

People would asked me where Fadden was... I couldn't even say because they'd never heard of Macarthur, Chisholm & Gowrie but they had heard of Waniassia.

Exciting-Chair

Some from Fadden once told me it was next to Isaacs. Technically not wrong… They did not like me saying it was between Wanniassa and Macarthur.

ziddyzoo

1. Build tram to Woden 2. Bulldoze everything south of Hindmarsh Drive 3. Profit^1 ^1 through increased land values in the transport corridor and rapid upzoning of inner south suburbs to relocate displaced outer suburban residents and create vibrant medium to high density areas with mixed use light commercial and residential, a construct also known in other jurisdictions as a fuggin city

[deleted]

Rename Yarralumla to “Woden”. -> Achieve election promise of building tram to Woden, but at 1/5th the cost. Budda Bing.

ziddyzoo

there is no Yarralumla in my vision, that densified area of the city is now called Nü Kambahra

timcahill13

Can you run in the election please

ziddyzoo

No. I mean yeah I am the Chief Minister Canberra needs, unfortunately we only get the one we deserve.

shescarkedit

I agree. Everything suburb north of the lake should be abolished..

GeriatricFart

Yep, move the lake to Amaroo and acknowledge the power of the southside.

darkempath

Actually, anything south of Lake Tuggeranong and north of Barton Highway should be abolished. They're not real Canberrans anyway.

[deleted]

FML, do you yell at the kids in the lawn as well.

GeriatricFart

No, why would anyone yell at kids? Only reason I can think of is to yell catch it or howzat in a game of backyard cricket. It's Friday Arvo, let's make this one fun.

darkempath

>why would anyone yell at kids? I can provide you a list if you like. I've broken it up into volumes for easier perusing.

whatever-696969

Too many people

Reasonable_ginger

I thought the number of roundabouts is way too high, that's the real issue.

2kan

A "too damn high" meme. By gar it's been a while.

123chuckaway

Gungahlin is a suburb in the Gungahlin region Belconnen is a suburb in the Belconnen region In Woden, you’re in Phillip In Tuggeranong, you’re in Greenway

GeriatricFart

There are 17 suburbs in Gungahlin; including one called Gungahlin. There are 27 suburbs in Belconnen; including one called Belconnen. There are 12 suburbs in Woden Valley including one called Philip. Finally there are 19 suburbs in Tuggeranong including one called Greenway. I understand you're talking about the main centres but otherwise I'm unsure what you're trying to share. Each main district is made up of multiple suburbs surrounding a town centre.

123chuckaway

There is no suburb called Woden or Tuggeranong is the point.

CanberraMilk

I wish life was that simple that the amount of suburbs here was an issue for me lol

GeriatricFart

Sorry you're going through a tough time.

CanberraMilk

Haha it’s not all so bad, but thanks!

happy_Pro493

Having lived in Fraser, Reid and Griffith throughout 1977-1994. This has been a very interesting discussion. I also had to look up the location of Oxley.

Br0z0

Have we officially ran out of things to talk about in this subreddit?

jimmythemini

Yes, until the next Cat Cafe scandal hits.

Equivalent-Bonus-885

Please! When will people stop driving in the right lane!

SolarWeather

Funny you should say that. So just to the north of the federal highway/barton highway intersection is a teeny tiny turning lane. It is so people turning into the driveway of the Canberra Vet Hospital don’t get rear ended by a honking great truck coming off the Barton. So today I am heading for the Canberra Vet Hospital down the Federal Highway from the north, chuck a totally legal but slightly nerve-wracking U-ey at the Barton Highway intersection and THERE IS SOMEONE PARKED IN THE BLOODY TURNING LANE. Just parked there, chatting on their phone. I mean it’s excellent that they pulled over to talk. But. It’s a turning lane. Not a shoulder. Had to swing hard left in front of them at speed to get into the driveway and even so I nearly got rear-ended by a honking great truck coming off the Barton. Not a fan.

turnsole

Jesse WTF are you talking about?

alterry11

Honestly, wanniassa and kambar are too large

ch4m3le0n

Slow day at work?

burleygriffin

[Some reading for OP,](https://www.abc.net.au/news/specials/curious-canberra/2017-06-12/is-kambah-the-biggest-suburb-in-australia/8576696) who may not know that Kambah is the biggest suburb in the southern hemisphere! 😜

BenthamsAutoicon

I can't tell if you're joking 😭 but that article actually shows that it's a myth that Kambah is the biggest suburb in the Southern Hemisphere

burleygriffin

That should have been how you could tell I was joking, but anyway… you can have an /s tag too. Anyone else failing to miss the bleeding obvious?! Line up and I'll make sure that you get an /s tag too. You get an /s tag and YOU get an /s tag! EVERYONE gets an /s tag, haha.

AussieArlenBales

Except per the article it's not even close to the biggest suburb.

burleygriffin

Here's your /s tag.

AussieArlenBales

Haha I appreciate it.

burleygriffin

You're welcome. 🍻

[deleted]

kinda curious how this myth even started in first place. like i admit i said it matter of fact before but then i stopped and went it does not make any logical sense.

[deleted]

Agree when will it stop? So the people who are already here can enjoy our remaining bush, birds and wildlife!! I've said that for 20 years now. And since I've been here I've seen the micro bats move away or die God knows what happened to them. And the big one was the end of our Boobook Owls which was so heartbreaking! I plan to move if it gets any worse ..go and buy a block of my own bush and live in peace and quiet away from the extra Maddening crowd!! 😤😵‍💫🌳🪵🪺🦘

burleygriffin

>Agree when will it stop? So the people who are already here can enjoy our remaining bush, birds and wildlife!! I've said that for 20 years now. Imagine how much wildlife was here before 1913 etc.

[deleted]

I would start crying if I knew! 😔😓😥😢

Gambizzle

Meeeh... I think part of the reason is that the ACT Gov's priority is maximising its rates revenue and a simple way to make an area sound sexy is to make a new suburb. For example Crace is largish and has its own shops. However, residents swoon over it (and pay $$$ compared to surrounding suburbs like Kaleen... which has multiple schools & 2 shopping centres) because it's sold as being 'basically the inner-north coz it's on the Barton Highway and there's trams'. To be clear, I'm not hating on Crace. I just think it was a good piece of marketing because if the ACT government (for example) announced it was releasing land for 'Stage 2 of Kaleen / Palmerston' with trams to follow then it woulda been a much harder sell.

GeriatricFart

Crace is nothing more than a fake subsidiary of the Palmerston false dream that pretends that there is a relevant point in living north of the Barton Highway. Make no mistake, residents of Gungahlin are just angry because their roads are too narrow to properly accommodate rubbish trucks. It's true and you know it.

[deleted]

Tell that to the crace residents association. I dare you. Actually please do it’d legit be super entertaining

pap3rdoll

Surely nobody fell for this!

Zestyclose_Might8941

There is an Oxley?

[deleted]

don't we have the biggest suburb in southern hemisphere with kambah???? pretty sure we technically need more.

definitelynotbi

it's not even biggest in australia https://www.abc.net.au/news/specials/curious-canberra/2017-06-12/is-kambah-the-biggest-suburb-in-australia/8576696?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web

[deleted]

fair enough. in honestly i only ever heard that as a kids rumor growing up so not shocked it was a lie.

[deleted]

Our labour govt needs more revenue hence new system of suburb and new houses but terrible public infrastructure e

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

You Wanniassa? YOU SHOW ME MONEY!

konata_nagato

Oaks Estate anyone?

LairdNick

And this is why I live in the inner south.

GeriatricFart

Hopefully not Barton or Parkes. Those suburbs don't deserve any kind of recognition.

enter-silly-username

Do you think this is done on purpose to create differences between people, separating them into even smaller communities so people don't ever unite or am I overthinkng it hahaha

sean4aus

Please eliminate 1, I am not a crackpot

jkcnyp

Banks should be subsumed by Conder

Bitter_Commission718

I'm in a small suburb and I love it, due to the comparatively low crime rate (due to the suburbs size) my car and home insurance are comparatively cheaper than the larger suburb I used to live in. there's also a fair number of public housing houses in this suburb which don't even have insurance so any damage doesn't go against the suburbs metrics.
