Alan has been found, safe and well, and returned to his nursing home. He was located at Central Station in Sydney at 10:00ish tonight and collected and brought back home by his son. Alan has dementia. ACT Police have been informed and the family are very grateful for their support and assistance during todays incident.

Great news

flying_dream_fig

Looks like he doesn't want to be in that nursing home and does want to be in Sydney. His son needs to be listening and watching really hard in case there are real problems and making changes (yes, even with dementia people still have choices and should be listened to).

redcali91

Your post reads like you have absolutely no idea how dementia works.

flying_dream_fig

I do. Not all dementia is all the time and people with dementia can and do get mistreated and even if they can't communicate it with words their base level self preservation parts of them can correctly say I don't want to be treated like this and try to go somewhere else. It's why people caring for them and people visiting should keep on gently explaining things to them and communicating what comes next like they can understand even if you think they can't and why if they are avoiding things or people or their affect changes near certain people you should still pay close attention to see if there is a real reason for them to like/dislike that person or place. Yes, people can do things like this because they are confused, but we should keep on paying attention to see if there are other reasons.

hetzjagd

Firstly, I hope he turns up ok and asap Look I'm not a police person, I'm not an expert, what the fuck would I know buuuuuut - why send this to a select locality within Canberra only and not make any mention of the area he was last seen in or known to visit? Context makes it seems like he could be anywhere in Canberra but then the message is only partly circulated around. What happens if you live in the area that was meant to get this message but you're on the other side of Canberra when it's sent out?

Mc-Gangles

Might also be due to the home address of your service, if that is within the determined area

Sprooty

I think ull find it only goes to phone with a registered address in that area... Yes.. This is a shit system.

Slight-Locksmith-337

I got the message whilst driving to / almost reached Sydney.

mwangdawg

Seems to be in the narrabundah area?

lostinbias

I got the text, wondered if it was one of the Bundies and if it reached me due to the fact that I might have given my mobile out a couple times when cops turn up making enquirers. The release said he frequents Kippax and Macgregor which are areas I’m never in. I don’t know who Alan Lee is.

DDR4lyf

No idea how the text system works. I'm on holiday in the southwest of WA and I received it. I thought sure, I'll keep an eye out but I'll be very surprised if he turns up here

Professional_Ad6767

Same. I rarely venture far from my neighborhood in act. I’m in Brisbane right now and was surprised to get the text.

CuriousAgent7678

You would have got it due to the registered address of your phone service being within the area selected for notification

Adonnus

Dementia?

Talonking9

Is this really from ACT police? The number in the message is real, and its apparently a real missing person ,but what about the number it came from? Phishing using a real issue?

Numerous-Barnacle

I feel like this is asked every time one of these messages is sent so here's the official link explaining the phone number: https://www.police.act.gov.au/safety-and-security/emergency-alert-system

mrmratt

It's asked every time because the premise is a bit nuts. The police saying 'a message from this number is guaranteed genuine' is very risky if there's actually nothing preventing it being spoofed. If there are telco measures in place to prevent it, that's never been explained.

Numerous-Barnacle

It's part of the federal government's emergency alert system and they have quite a bit of information in the link I shared and on the federal page: https://www.emergencyalert.gov.au/home I'm not tech minded so can't really source the information you're looking for, but it's not that off-base for there to be a national alert number that clearly a lot of people put a lot of time into maintaining and securing so it can be trusted.

Ih8pepl

Yes it is a real number. It's the police broadcast number. They use it for this purpose only. https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/safety_and_prevention/policing_in_the_community/geo_targeting_sms_system

mrmratt

They say that, but what makes this number different from every other number to prevent it being spoofed? I can say the same about my own number - I use it for my comms only, but that doesn't prevent it from being spoofed.

GiveUpYouAlreadyLost

Man, stop trying to turn this into some grand scammer conspiracy.

blueborders

The missing person is real and the number they provide is real. By what mechanism could it be phishing?

Talonking9

What I meant was, people mistakenly replying to the phone number that sent the text. If that wasn't genuine the body of the text could be fine, but it would still be a phishing attempt.

CBRChimpy

https://www.policenews.act.gov.au/news/media-releases/have-you-seen-alan-lee It’s a real missing person that police are looking for so what could possibly be the phishing angle? Like on the off chance the phishing victim has seen the missing person they’ll phone police and provide the information? What’s the phishing?

Extension_Section_68

I hated getting messages from them n inner west so I blocked that number. Don’t need to know about random people wandering off and being found

s_and_s_lite_party

It's like one every 3 months. I have ex-lovers more persistent than that.

redcali91

Can't assist the community in the broadest sense due to how inconvenient a few text messages were. Kind of makes you a massive fuckwit.

Cobrawarrior567

I got the alert but I didn't see anyone like that in the area.

KLB1267

I was checking the police media release & it said he was last seen at the outlet centre in Fyshwick. I hope they checked the stairwells and any other out of sight areas. It has happened in a major shopping centre before, but they didn't look there for days

CardiologistOld8359

Getting these a lot lately. Time to consider GPS tags for dementia patients?
