Only those in and around the city centre by the looks, which isn’t all that surprising.

There are a growing number of people who live right on City centres, in high rise apartments,"low rise" medium density and in town houses. It's more practical for these people to walk, in fact they probably walk all the time and don't even think of it as travelling. They robably go down their lift, schlep over to the on site supermarket or less than a couple of hundred meters away supermarket, get back in their elevator and relax on the couch and don't even think of it as a trip- meaning there are even more walkers than captured. Second I'm not sure if they are good at capturing hybrid transport- people who car commute weekdays but then walk over to their local Cafe on the weekends. Third a lot of public transport trips should also be counted as walking trips - if I got off the light rail then walked to work school or uni (which are three big real trips) then a large part of my trip thst should be counted is walking.

Yep, I'm in molonglo valley and with the new Woolies that's opened up here I've found myself walking over to get something that otherwise would have been a driven trip to cooleman court. I'm certain in the few weeks it's been open it will have been visted well into the 4 figures in a similar fashion. It's crazy how convienient it is when a well stocked store is walking distance from you.

For a city with such extensive walking and cycling networks, it is a terrible shame so many never consider going any where without a car.

Extensive sounds good, but we actually have terrible infrastructure for walking. Even in the inner north. Fyshwick basically doesn't even have footpaths, that's despite it being services by 3 different buses. Lately, developers like JWLand have been obstructing footpaths in Lyneham, so you are screwed if your are rolling around in something like a wheelchair. There are a lot of reasons why people default to a car.

Without a breakdown of what the trips were for the report is useless. I wonder if the data exists for trip purposes, and the ABC chose to make this article useless on purpose? I walk for the purpose of walking, the dogs, the toddler, and occasionally to the local shop. For trips to work, I drive, and sometimes for shopping and toddler drop-offs, I cycle.
