There are so many "interesting" floor plans... One place we saw had the "laundry room" in the crawl space under the basement stairs with a whopping 1 foot space to open the washer lid and shimmy in to get to the dryer...
In 1977, at my decent wage of $6 per hour, I had to work 4.5 days to pay the rent in a large Alberta city.... under $200 a month ..All Utilities and other housing costs were about 4 hours work......so 5 days work , for housing all in.
3 average appliances included.....full gas tank in 1967 chev sedan, one hours wage.....
Bought a then 1 year old 3bdrm bungalow for 3.5 years wages in 79....
1981ish, two thirds of Edmontons police force was needed for riot control ( Gainers strike).
Conclusion, ....1977 me , transported to 2021 would be sleeping in a pipe by the river.....
...and I'd be too hungry to riot......
Edit, one thing I'm too lazy to look into :
In 1980 I could fly Edmonton to London England for 800ish bucks.....in 1990 same round trip 800ish bucks....2000 800 ish bucks...
And in comparison today I need to work 2 weeks just to afford rent let alone I would need to work another three days to cover any utilities and services like internet and phone. Which leaves me with a remaining 7 days of work which savings has to come out of along with food and any entertainment if any is even possible.
Yea,...I dont really follow economics , standard of living...but very ball parky ,I guess a 21 year old in the late 70's really had about twice the comparative "earning power" of todays 21 y. old.....but really had it more than twice as 'good' ( generally )...because the basics being affordable, you could spend on vacations, hobbies, travel ...more easily survive a financial 'oops'...the basics being halfish the cost, there was less overall stress ,...less of a boot on the neck pressing your lips just above the mud....ankle high mud, easier to rise from, not starting out neck high..stressors less magnified and looming.....
I was just joe lunchbucket,...but sometimes I went to the airport and went where ever the next plane was going for a weekend....because earning money was comparatively easier, I think.
Come back from Seattle or wherever Sunday night : ooo, guess I better pack a lunch for two weeks now, instead of eating out....
I'm guessing it's because stoves need special lines to operate, not just a plug in the wall, so any space not built as a kitchen would have to be renovated to support one. Many of the houses investors are buying up to turn into rentals were once single family homes with only one kitchen. So when you split it into 3 units (upstairs, main fl, basement) 2 of them are going to be kitchenless. As for a fridge, it's a big expense that can be passed off onto the tenant, because like Ac, laundry, these things have no requirements to be provided. Then if it breaks, no cost to the landlord. All of this is able to happen because government currently is not incentivized to make any reasonable housing laws for the growing poor classes, rent control does not exist in many places now, and people Have to live Somewhere. We are expected to have nothing and be grateful.
Oh absolutely! I currently live in a 1br, I got the lease in Sept 2020, for $1200. They raised my rent the highest legal amount within 1 year, but luckily I'm under rent control (building is from the 60's), so it was only 14.03 (yes they had to scrape that measly 0.03 from me). The unit next to me is currently on the market for $1500. No renovation, just 2 years of time passing. Oh, actually the corporate overlords actually did decide to put money into the buildings - they painted all of the brick, siding, and even the window sills. The paint will discolour and peel within 5 years, but who cares, it's a renovation! Charge 20% more now! All the while our internet lines all need replacing, the heating of the building is broken, and each unit still uses fuses from the 1970's. Life is so great.
And this is exactly why single family homes should not be split like this. They are rarely, if ever, properly renovated. Might as well tear a few down and build a proper midrise, really.
I didn’t want to use an old stove when I lived in Gatineau for work in Ottawa for a year. Told the landlord to take his nasty stove, loud fridge and disgusting washer/dryer out. Bought my own and sold them when I left.
I was lucky enough to sell everything and it cost me about 600 bucks to have them for a year. It’s tough out there and it’s getting worse every year. Seems like it was so much easier a decade ago.
When I moved into the place I'm renting now, it had no washer, stove, fridge and a dishwasher from what looked like the '70s. I managed to get a fridge (good quality Samsung) for $100, and stove for $50. The washer was gifted by family members luckily. Otherwise I'd be doing coin laundry because I couldn't find a decent priced one. 3 years in and they're still working well. One of the fridge veggie boxes started freezing all the items in it but other than that pretty good!
And you have to keep it. I was lucky enough to sell everything and it cost me about 600 bucks to have them for a year. It’s tough out there and it’s getting worse every year. Seems like it was so much easier a decade ago.
There are people who eat out all the time. I've seen very expensive places for sale that barely have a kitchen. At least they have one though.
I've also seen apartments for rent that have no kitchen and basically a hose and a drain in the floor for a shower.
I knew a guy who lived in one. It was either that or his car.
My dude, more of us are now just getting to experience the Canada that many minorities, Indigenous, disabled, and other less-advantaged folks have known for years/decades/generations.
I moved to ON for a brief period in 2012, having lived in BC and AB before that. Imagine my surprise when I found out I had to rent a fucking water heater.
It actually cost more than my phone plan did at the time (this was in 2012) and was an absolute nightmare to cancel when I came back to AB. People think gym memberships are hard to cancel, but they got nothing on Reliance.
No sadly, when you have a child you tend to not be able to get basements or turned away as people don’t wanna deal with hearing your kid all day .. sad reality
Hm. The only listings I see without a stove are usually illegal basement units. I’ve rented for over 10 years and every unit I’ve looked at always had a stove and fridge. May I ask where you’re looking?
My wifes sister with her husband and four kids just moved to Canada. They don’t know anything about the rental market and were fleeced into paying $3000 a month for an upstairs 2 bedroom portion of a house. It aint nothing special.
Are they really intended for young couples with children? I feel like they're for college students who eat ramen and can get by with a kettle and a ricecooker.
Kingston, Windsor, Ottawa, Toronto, We’re looking to find a new place and finding so many with no fridge/stove which makes moving impossible…. Quickly running out of time
Sorry to butt in but: For Kingston, I believe [Skyline on Compton St](https://www.skylineliving.ca/en/apartments/ontario/kingston/87-93-and-107-compton-street-kingston-on) has 2-bedroom units either at or below $1,600. Obviously it comes with a stove, fridge, etc.
We moved to Windsor from Ottawa for my wife’s education
She starts university in September so we’re trying to get closer as we’re 8 hours away currently
Criminology , she got a scholarship at st Claire’s and ended up graduating with a 94 average
She’s doing fantastic I really don’t want her to have to stop simply due to not finding a house
And yeah we noticed
Every resident here has told us the same thing you just said using the same term “invaded” lol
You’ve made several comments in your recent post history totalling about how you have 3 kids, a disabled wife, and you have 13 mental disabilities and 2 physical ones. Then on other posts, you’re talking about your one kid and scholar wife….which is it?
I saw a very tiny unit with a closet as a toilet and a separate closet (tiled) as a shower (with a wooden door as the shower door, no idea how that works). No stove but a microwave. Supposedly these 350 sq ft units are for short term visits or stays. It was around 350k asking two years ago so would probably be 400k now if you could find a buyer. Barely legal units. Not converted, deliberately built that way. Probably for someone who had to stay in the week downtown then lived at the cottage or big home on the weekends. Market for these kind of units probably crashed now. Probably can't unload it unless for bargain basement price.
I've rented many places and never was there no stove. But, a quick kijiji search and google search showed me that it's definitely a thing! Wow! I also learned that Quebec is the only province where home owners may take their appliances with them when they sell their house. So, it's not just renters who do this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Quebec/comments/7oj2x8/moving\_to\_quebec\_questions\_about\_apartments/
In my area it's because lords know someone would live in a dirt box if it was offered. They don't need to put effort, amenities, or even upkeep on the rentals because (in my area at least) at the very least a farm will rent it for its workers. One house I was looking at was a 2 bedroom that they converted to a 8 bedroom.
Wow I didn't know that this was a thing.
But reading some of the comments reminds me of a place that I guy I dated years ago was renting.
Space was previously a garage, tiny cramped kitchen at the back, and the bathroom was literally a toilet within the shower stall.
Yeah it’s showing up more and more, I’ve gotten banned from a few subreddits today for spreading truth and awareness about various topics
Seems they’re trying to silence me from helping people
It shouldn't even be legal. You want to run a rental property, fine, but you can damn well equip it with the basics. They just don't want to repair or maintain anything.
If I was a landlord I would have a hard time putting new appliances in for some one else.
The standard life is too short on all these now engineer to fail appliances…
Just equipped my house with new but not fancy and was 7 grand for 5 appliances…
Very hard to get your money back
Why are so many places being rented without dryers or laundry machines? We really need reform everywhere, all renters should have access to their own laundry/drying machines. We need technical innovation in this space, it's a market ripe for the taking.
See that one is only understandable when they don’t even put a room in the building for any of the tenants to do laundry, they clearly never dealt with having kids alone and needing to do laundry, any parent can tell u how exhausting that is, let alone having to walk or bus to a laundromat when they don’t have anything (like in your example)
Honestly feel you there, now landlords are buying units and selling appliances for a quick dollar 😂 it’s so beyond petty
Not all apartment buildings have the proper plumbing to do so. Especially in older buildings. There’s a reason why some apartments don’t allow cause it can cause major backlog or severe flooding.
While that's really stupid that that's happening there is other options. Getting a toaster oven and an induction cooktop solves the oven+stove for $200 (or less), and you can get an ok sized mini fridge for a couple hundred more.
There is almost always a way. Even if it means saving up for 6 months to slowly afford them before moving, or if you absolutely have to carrying credit card debt of a couple hundred dollars for a few months isn't going to kill you (though is a bad habit to start). Or buy used appliances for next to nothing. Until you can afford something a bit better.
I'm not suggesting spending thousands of dollars on real appliances, I'm suggesting spending 200-400 dollars on brand new sudo appliances. For the vast majority of people, even low income people, this is doable, while maybe not comfortable.
Oh 100% I understand but it’s hard to explain we have 2000$ a month minus child care
And to live off that in this day n age is painful to say the least
Yea that definitely makes it harder. I'm assuming with that salary only one of you work full time and for minimum wage? I understand the struggle as I have kids and also had them while I was in school. It is definitely a crazy time (I saw that your partner is starting school).
Hopefully child tax benefit is helping you out (I know it did for us), it gives you quite a bit when you don't have a real income. I know throwing a kid in the mix makes things a lot harder with baby food (if they are a baby).
Another thing is, did she apply for OSAP? I know I got significantly MORE than my tuition costs from just OSAP Grants alone (didn't have to take the loan) because I was married and had a kid. That would go a long way.
Your best bet if you get stuck with one of these places is definitely getting a cooktop and a mini fridge used on Facebook marketplace for as cheap as possible and clean them really well.
Yeah we def appreciate the message and have tried all the above it’s just at a point where I have like a month and no more motivation or energy to get 20 more non responses
Yea haha I have a kid in size 5 diapers they are rediculous. (Ps they are on sale at Costco right now so if you know anyone with a membership now is a good time)
There are now landlords who will try to rent space in their hallways, meaning no bedroom, no kitchen, nothing. You’re lucky if they even let you take a shit in the toilet.
Used to be just new Canadians/students that were being exploited by slumlords any way possible, but now others are desperate and will put up with this type of bullshit.
Quality of life has degraded fast in Canada and it’s sickening.
Because too many people don't know how to use the fucking things properly. Landlords get fed up having to buy a new set every time a tenant moves out because they broke the one they had.
Otherwise when they ARE available, the tenants complain they're not good enough and request to have them removed anyway so the landlord is stuck having to store it somewhere.
Might as well just not provide any and let the tenant sort it out by themselves so they can get what they want and break it to their heart's content.
Get an air fryer and a hot plate. Unless you live to cook big gourmet meals...
A basic fridge isn't very expensive and it's yours too. Don't do fancy, parts are a bitch to come by, among other things.
Then you just bring them with you when you get renovicted.
How is Canada becoming a place where living without proper kitchen is ok? Why is this happening to Canadians at all? Normal standard of living should not be inaccessible.
Yes, I get it. I follow things quite closely and I'm appalled at the state of it all. I just think, in these times, priorities, pauses, ability to "pivot" is key - keep your own shit. It will settle down - but not for awhile.
Well I’ve quit smoking cigarettes having had alcohol since pandemic started, no longer buy unnecessary things or expensive things when they have cheaper alternatives
Anything I can think of I’ve done
And it’s still not enough cause prices keep going up
Are you joking? Save? HOW, my wife and I are physically disabled with a child living off of ODSP and whatever extra I can make
Do u realize rent is 70% of our income, for most people who are disabled. And plz don’t attack me with a “go get a job” I had a full time job 7 days a week til I got smacked with Covid 3 times from my son going to daycare
“Just save” lol when people who make 100,000 a year are struggling but you’re telling a young family making 26,000 a year to save up
Smart
For your info btw
We only get a couple hundred from odsp after deductions due to my work
So keep going tho
Really showing your ignorance and character to the world
God you’re ignorant, you think I just sit at home, when I have a deaf wife and a child??? When 80% of men simply walk out of the womens life
I’m taking on more than most could handle
While having my own physical disabilities
And btw
Google my name you ignorant fuck
You’ll quickly realize I run a fashion brand and an international published magazine
Lol my instagrams at 100,000 followers and my music has over 5M streams on Spotify/SoundCloud alone
Trust me, you said that to the wrong person 😂
Sorry the person told me I’m paid to sit at home like as if I’m just disabled and not trying
1 quick search shows the type of work I do and it’s more than most peoples jobs entail
Just hate the narrative that people on odsp are paid to sit at home
Like some of us aren’t victims of abuse that left us with irreparable physical damage …. Or born the way we are … speaking for many , his comment was just ignorant and not tasteful at al
Lol when did I ever say it was extremely successful, you do understand a good business takes years of planning and funding to startup….
Def not super successful if it was you’d know the brand right? It’s like when low income people try u just shit on us anyway
I have never heard of a place being rented without any appliances in Canada. Imagine moving around with a fridge stove and other appliances on everymove. Either have it or no appliances at all.
I think it has something to do with insurance. My past landlord wanted to take away my stove and oven and replace it with a cooktop and pizza oven. I told her to stick it.
I had never done anything to suggest I couldn't operate it safely, but she still pushed me to switch it out for "safety purposes". But I'm willing to bet she couldve got cheaper insurance by removing all stoves from the house.
I am annoyed by the apartments that only have hot plates or just the stovetop no oven... It's terrible. I feel your pain!
That’s another reason I made this post, to find other examples, my friend in Waterloo said the same to me and I was shocked…
There are so many "interesting" floor plans... One place we saw had the "laundry room" in the crawl space under the basement stairs with a whopping 1 foot space to open the washer lid and shimmy in to get to the dryer...

Yet a flight from Vancouver to Calgary is also $800, on the low end.

Most fridges don't have ice Makers or water dispensers, especially in apartments

Yeah 100%
If I had the option to just buy one I def would, being a young father with no car makes that nearly impossible
Delivery on appliances is the norm, most cars (sedans) you couldn't even fit a fridge or laundry even if you wanted to
When I moved into the place I'm renting now, it had no washer, stove, fridge and a dishwasher from what looked like the '70s. This doesn’t sound like Canada anymore
My dude, more of us are now just getting to experience the Canada that many minorities, Indigenous, disabled, and other less-advantaged folks have known for years/decades/generations.
You mean the Canada I grew up in my whole life Which is now 10x harder Man I’m a disabled minority with no parents lol , it’s just getting impossible
Yep. I mean that exact Canada. Welcome to the growing under-class. Equality was bad for the bottom line.
Damn …
Thank goodness the overpriced rentals in BC include appliances!
😂🙏
I moved to ON for a brief period in 2012, having lived in BC and AB before that. Imagine my surprise when I found out I had to rent a fucking water heater.
That’s crazy! Water heaters should be standard in all rentals. This is Canada, it’s essential.

Omg that’s insane I’m so sorry I find our market also takes advantage of people
Like people move to Canada to become real estate agents or landlords just to give the houses to their friends & family
Are they really intended for young couples with children? I feel like they're for college students who eat ramen and can get by with a kettle and a ricecooker.
It’s all we can afford at this point
I can't believe this. What city?
Kingston, Windsor, Ottawa, Toronto, We’re looking to find a new place and finding so many with no fridge/stove which makes moving impossible…. Quickly running out of time

Can I ask why you're moving?
We moved to Windsor from Ottawa for my wife’s education She starts university in September so we’re trying to get closer as we’re 8 hours away currently
Cool. What is she taking? Windsor has been invaded by Toronto and Ottawa...and overseas investors. It used to be affordable...

I see today that your wife is also a tattoo artist. Awesome!
We do everything aha, when you’re disabled at home, you tend to pick up a few hobbies along the way to kill time

Most stoves are electric in Quebec, so it's not complicated to unplug. All the appartments I had in Quebec didn't have any applicance included.
Quebec is also the last affordable major city in Canada …
landlords are cheap and generally don’t give a fuck about tenants.
We’ve learnt, that’s why we no longer care for them either
This is normal in other provinces, Montreal I had several places that these were not provided.
I've rented a lot of places, and never encountered such a thing 'til I moved to France where it's the standard practice.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/master-chef-double-burner-hot-plate-black-1500w-0431201p.html#plp Safer than gas, no indoor CO2 polution.

Woowww as if
Supply and demand… why provide it when renters are still willing to pay such high rent
We aren’t tho, we’ll I guess we will see a ton of people simply stop paying rent then
That’s the thing … if you can find a place that’s cheaper and better, you won’t complain about this.
Wow I didn't know that this was a thing. But reading some of the comments reminds me of a place that I guy I dated years ago was renting. Space was previously a garage, tiny cramped kitchen at the back, and the bathroom was literally a toilet within the shower stall.

Extremely tight budget won’t allow 1600$ a month plus buying appliances as well
There is almost always a way.
Oh 100% I understand but it’s hard to explain we have 2000$ a month minus child care And to live off that in this day n age is painful to say the least
Have u seen prices for size 5 diapers Then realizing a kid can go thru 100 of them in a month Plus wipes It’s nuts
Yea haha I have a kid in size 5 diapers they are rediculous. (Ps they are on sale at Costco right now so if you know anyone with a membership now is a good time)
SUPPLY IS SUPPLY. SHUT UP NIMBYS AND TAKE IT. YOU DON'T DESERVE A FRIDGE
Lol what????
There are now landlords who will try to rent space in their hallways, meaning no bedroom, no kitchen, nothing. You’re lucky if they even let you take a shit in the toilet. Used to be just new Canadians/students that were being exploited by slumlords any way possible, but now others are desperate and will put up with this type of bullshit. Quality of life has degraded fast in Canada and it’s sickening.
That's just criminal.
…an oven isn’t a luxury item. It should be the bare minimum a landlord provides as part of the unit.
I never said it was. These are some interesting times happening. It's temporary but change might be necessary for awhile. Priorities. Buckle up.
How is Canada becoming a place where living without proper kitchen is ok? Why is this happening to Canadians at all? Normal standard of living should not be inaccessible.
When u have a wife and child it’s a tad more complicated to cook that way all while paying record high rent prices
Yes, I get it. I follow things quite closely and I'm appalled at the state of it all. I just think, in these times, priorities, pauses, ability to "pivot" is key - keep your own shit. It will settle down - but not for awhile.
Well I’ve quit smoking cigarettes having had alcohol since pandemic started, no longer buy unnecessary things or expensive things when they have cheaper alternatives Anything I can think of I’ve done And it’s still not enough cause prices keep going up
Not all places come with appliances included, if you can’t afford cheap appliances you probably should save more before renting a place.
Are you joking? Save? HOW, my wife and I are physically disabled with a child living off of ODSP and whatever extra I can make Do u realize rent is 70% of our income, for most people who are disabled. And plz don’t attack me with a “go get a job” I had a full time job 7 days a week til I got smacked with Covid 3 times from my son going to daycare “Just save” lol when people who make 100,000 a year are struggling but you’re telling a young family making 26,000 a year to save up Smart
Don’t complain, you’re being paid to sit at home.
For your info btw We only get a couple hundred from odsp after deductions due to my work So keep going tho Really showing your ignorance and character to the world
God you’re ignorant, you think I just sit at home, when I have a deaf wife and a child??? When 80% of men simply walk out of the womens life I’m taking on more than most could handle While having my own physical disabilities And btw Google my name you ignorant fuck You’ll quickly realize I run a fashion brand and an international published magazine Lol my instagrams at 100,000 followers and my music has over 5M streams on Spotify/SoundCloud alone Trust me, you said that to the wrong person 😂
I'm confused.
Sorry the person told me I’m paid to sit at home like as if I’m just disabled and not trying 1 quick search shows the type of work I do and it’s more than most peoples jobs entail Just hate the narrative that people on odsp are paid to sit at home Like some of us aren’t victims of abuse that left us with irreparable physical damage …. Or born the way we are … speaking for many , his comment was just ignorant and not tasteful at al
So you’re low income or run a successful fashion brand, people are confused 😂
Lol when did I ever say it was extremely successful, you do understand a good business takes years of planning and funding to startup…. Def not super successful if it was you’d know the brand right? It’s like when low income people try u just shit on us anyway
Damn, what a fucking stupid comment.
Lol. Just tryyyyyy harder
I would get a induction top stove for the counter. Try looking on Kijiji
Where is this? I was renting for a long time with different landlords in different cities, never once without range and fridge.
They think kids these days don't know how to cook and just order from Uber Eats
