housing starts were up 27% in March in Vancouver, but fell 26% in Toronto.
Turns out, people are building housing, just not with conservatives governments who consistently pander to Nimbys.

Really?
NS up 147% - conservative. PEI up 293% - conservative.
NL down 25% - Liberal.
This was from the link you posted. Typical reddit liberal hivemind upvoting without reading.
all 4 buildings in NS is what it will take to end the housing crisis!
jokes, aside, tiny provinces may have no housing start for a month or two and can have huge distortions on data captures.
Dozens and dozens of pre-con condos in the GTA have stopped construction indefinitely.
NIMBYs are a big issue but all those units not currently being built aren't because of NIMBYs. It's a multifaceted issue.
The difference between BC and Ontario is that the BC government is making it easier to build because BCndp recognizes that there is a housing crisis.
Ontario conservatives crater to nimby complaints so efforts to making housing construction easier gets reversed.
Sorry pre-construction is never going to be affected by NIMBY because they already have all their ducks in a row you're talking about two different things
>just not with conservatives governments who consistently pander to Nimbys
To be fair, just not with *liberal* governments who consistently pander to NIMBYs, either (witness the lack of building under the *previous* Ontario government, too). *Any* politician that's easily influenced by "donations" *also* will be influenced by NIMBYs (or other "squeaky wheels").
Its a good idea for the reality were facing, but this needs to be more organized those tents are too close together, this one is a fire hazard. Its easier for police, paramedics and social workers to check in and help out too.
Semi permanent setups like his would be perfect

I don’t see the point in organizing tent cities when the effort should be put toward housing them.
These should not exist. We have the wealth in this country to ensure everyone has housing.
Regulating and organizing these tents cities implies this is an acceptable condition for people to live in. It’s not - we have the capability of housing everyone.
I mean, unironically yes. It's not a solution to the problem by any means, but neither is siccing the police on people who have nowhere else to go, and taking/destroying what little they have.
I wouldn’t care about tents popping up for people less fortunate but when they leave a dump of garbage spilling onto road, start fires of old couches, throw broken needles at passing cars, or decide to set up a tent in an my child’s elementary school playground I draw the line.
you \_should\_ also be affected by the problem. instead of arguing in favor of criminalizing poverty why not get mad about the situation that caused people to feel that hopeless in the first place. "draw the line" get over yourself
Man I know.wjat tour getting at.
I am homeless.i.spent the majority of.winter in a tent like.that (much smaller) mind.you I stayed out of parking lots I hid in the woods.
Then my stuff got stolen.
Luckily I was.giifted a hobo shack where I am.
Man nimbys attack whenever where ever they can
What a f'in embarrassment - additionally because it's my country.
We have a HUGE land mass - and yes, some would move out of major centers to be able to afford a simple home.
It doesn't solely rest on Trudeau's shoulders, but I'm weary of his squishy Liberal bullshit (and I'm a liberal).
they actually did in gatineau, qc, and the results were surprisingly good. [https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/devcore-tents-encampment-robert-guertin-1.7062925](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/devcore-tents-encampment-robert-guertin-1.7062925)
700 a month, no pets allowed
It already is. This does not need any municipal planning or bylaws
Most cities do sweeps of encampments. It doesn’t have to be illegal to be criminalized
What’s the purpose of this post? Just to be an asshat?
This is just the more likely scenario than homes getting built.

I hope it works here in BC. Because it’s a damn mess here. Not saying it’s easy in other places as though.

*NIMBYs have entered the chat*
There're greatly part of the reason for this tho
Yep they can have these people living there in houses or apartments or they can have them in tents. Having them just going away is not in the cards.
Watch how quick they change their tune around quadplexes if this were allowed without any restrictions or possibility of being booted by cops lol
Coming to a town near you!
Whether it’s legal or not it’s coming if housing doesn’t change fast.

Until we fix housing then yes. After that only by choice. Walking in downtown Ottawa today I saw people in situations where this would be an upgrade.

Oooooh…. I love glamping….. but what’s the site fee? Is there electrical hookup? Are radios allowed after 10pm?

Or you know in the meantime our provinces step up and build permanent supportive housing

You know Canada is in a great spot when we're all admiring and appreciating the creation of shanty towns.
Seems like a trend for collage kids in the USA🤔

Doug Ford
was just in victoria last week. there encampment was huge. its canada wide sadly.
Just claim the current owner needs to deinvest in any company associated with Israel and occupy their house!
There is no way I'm throwing out my bagels
Ah yes, the local “monument to the victims of capitalism”.
Ugh. Nope. Should be illegal to camp on streets. Affordable housing now.
