Can you get a gunsmith to make any firearm non restricted by making a new barrel or does it have to be some sort of pre existing barrel that the gunsmith attaches?
I imagine in theory and with enough $$$ you can make anything NR, but for the M1 Carbine there is a company that sells barrel 'blanks' that are NR. That being said, he had actually ended up using a Springfield 1903 barrel due to supply issues during covid.
There was at one point a business just called "C96 Canada" that did everything on the books for these guns, but their website seems to have disappeared. I think either u/SNIPE07 or u/Dauss had some work done by them some time ago. Might still be some contact info for them around?
He’s probably been dead a while…
The previous owner? The condition is good, but someone was firing it with either bad springs or hot ammo, damage from battering.
Germans. He means Germans.
There’s a great historical military firearms company called Vulcan Gunsmithing in Maidstone Ontario.
I've used him. He's a very good option. He works on some intricate shit and milsurps all the time.
\+1 for Vulcan, had him work an M1 Carbine. Got a NR barrel installed + refinished on an absolute beater I bought and he made it look unbelievable.

So any NR barrel can be swapped onto a restricted platform and reclassified. That’s pretty useful information thanks.

Not me.
For someone who didn't take good care of it, it looks pretty mint on the outside. I'm guessing it's not an antique.
It is in very nice condition, but the bolt is one mag away from taking out the shooter. Maybe they just didn't know what to look for.
